  • Here are the results from the first trip out with the Uintah Precision UPR-15 chambered in 224 Valkyrie. The UPR 15 is an AR-15 bolt action Upper that swaps with the push of two pins onto any standard AR-15 lower. But this rifle has the added accuracy benefits of a bolt action. Ammunition used is Federals current line of available 224 Valkyrie which includes the American Eagle 75 grain FMJ. The fusion 90 grain soft point and the federal premium loaded with the Sierra 90 grain match king. All groups at 100 yards from a bench with a Bipod and rear sand bag.

    I know how you measure your groups bc I watch and like your videos regularly. But perhaps you could call your particular measurement system WDS (or whatever) instead of and to differentiate it from the usual MOA standard everyone else is accustomed to. Could also switch to MOA so we can compare apples to apples etc. or at least always mention the distance of the furthest spacing of shots in the groups and at what distance shot and we can do our own calculations.

    It's a scaled down Creedmoor. I'd say it's shooting great for a new barrel. Next time out I would say you will get even better groups, now that it fouled and broke in a little. Go for the grand next, see what it will do.

    When you picked the 224 Valkyrie, did you consider 22-250? Just wondering how you decided on a varmint round. Very interested in your thoughts on this. I’m a big Tikka fan, and they are not chambering anything in 224 Valkyrie just yet.

    • @WestDesertShooter
      @WestDesertShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well Uintah Precision was releasing the brand new UPR-15 bolt action AR-15 upper and asked what I wanted it chambered in. Seemed like a great time to see what the Valkyrie was all about. 22-250 doesn’t fit through an AR-15 lower so that wasn’t really an option. Didn’t get it specific for varmint I actually shoot targets long range 98% of the time so that’s why I was interested in the Valkyrie.

  • @BryanGrigsby
    @BryanGrigsby 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd really like to see someone shoot a 6.5 twist barrel with the 90 grain SMK. To go the distance, some of those groups are going to need to tighten up. The vertical stringing could just be inconsistent velocities with off the shelf ammo. How did your brass look? Did you blow any primers?

    • @WestDesertShooter
      @WestDesertShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brass looks excellent man. With the bolt action it’s not getting ripped out. Not a single pressure sign not even close to blowing a primer. I just ordered some 95 SMKs to reload to see if they can fly straight. I have a video I’m editing now at 1,000 and 1300 Yards

    • @BryanGrigsby
      @BryanGrigsby 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      West Desert Shooter I really like that upper. I didn't realize they made a bolt action that would fit on a lower like that. It kind of looks like a small Ruger Precision. Thanks for posting this btw, and doing the leg work. I have a 24" 6.5 twist barrel on order for a gas gun. On the fence on whether to run with it, or cancel and see where the dust settles on this cartridge.

      West Desert Shooter not been my experience. I've had marginal luck with the V/Z-Max bullets from Hornady, and the Varminter series from Sierra. But the Ballistic Tips from Nosler have always shot great in my guns. • @captainamer71

    I really want you to compare it to the .223 and 6.5 and to find the true max effective range. I am going to be shooting mine which is a AR15 20” barrel next Friday out to 1,00 maybe 1,200 yards

    • @WestDesertShooter
      @WestDesertShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay, what do you define as max effective range? Also ammo plays huge into that. From 130-147g 6.5CM or 69-80g 223 or even going with the 95 SMK or Berger in the Valkyrie so many variables man

    • @captainamer71
      @captainamer71 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      West Desert Shooter curious how far away you can bang steel before hitting the transonic barrier. Federal claims that is 1,300 yards for their factory 90 SMK loading. No one has ever tested this in a video.

    • @captainamer71
      @captainamer71 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes ammo will play into that sort of test. I would say the comparison part of video at 1,000 yards. With what every bullet or load is most optimal for each cartridge would be fair if it will load in the magazine. I personally think loading in a magazine should be a factor.

    • @WestDesertShooter
      @WestDesertShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely since that’s how all my guns are set up to run anyway. 1k sounds like a great test but man, if the wind picks up during a string for a cartridge it will totally change results for each cartridge. Basically a ballistics chart will tell you. Now I’ve gotten a real world velocity for the Valkyrie, Creedmoor and 223 we can look on paper at drop and wind drift

  • @OC_Lofton

    Can the Uintah uppers accept standard AR barrels and function by closing off the gas port (i.e. adjustable gas block) - assuming the bolt face matches the cartridge of ones choice? It's my understanding that (.224) Valkyrie and 6.8 SPC are the same. Just curious.

    • @WestDesertShooter
      @WestDesertShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, the bolt of the Uintah is a 3 lug design and is proprietary to their barrel extension. They do sell upper and bolt sets without barrels but it’s a special order and most of the cost is in the upper anyway it’s worth getting the barrel with it. The uppers do utilize standard barrels so if you ever need to replace one it’s easy to do.

    • @OC_Lofton
      @OC_Lofton 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      West Desert Shooter, if the barrel replacement is as easy as an AR barrel replacement, it's worth giving a try. I've been searching for this upper concept for years. Can't believe more companies haven't done it prior to now.

    I guarantee you that your barrel has too much free bore. This is why your groups look the way they look. Measure you lands, re-seat the bullets between 0.010-0.015" from the lands and you will see a huge difference. If you measure the lands with 90SMK it should not exceed 2.281" OAL, if your chamber is within SAAMI. Anything above it, is unwanted free bore.

    Reviewing a rifle that is not broken in yet is a little unfair for both velocity & precision. After 60-100 rounds and good cleaning and proper fouling would tell us a lot more

  • @stevenewman4900
    @stevenewman4900 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    New viewer here. Well presented review of real world accuracy that most shooters, short of benchrest experts, can achieve. You are correct that changing bullet weights, even in the same brand of ammo, will cause inconsistent results, accuracy wise. If you want to give a more realistic view of grouping ability, suggest you clean your rifle whenever you try different weight projectiles, and fire 10 fouling shots, before shooting for group size. And it is true that your barrel will improve and become more consistent as it breaks in. I understand your method of measuring and averaging group sizes, but unfortunately, 99.9 percent of shooters are going to use the "center hole of the two furthest shots" method to measure group size, so that is going to skew your results. Not bashing or complaining, but I would expect any custom made barrel to shoot true MOA (center hole to center hole of the two outside shots) as a minimum average. By conventional group measurements, you currently have about a 1.75 - 1.5 MOA rifle, on average. You don't just take the best 4 shots out of 5 in a group, and one exceptional .55 inch group, does not mean you have a 1/2 MOA rifle. I know you have no control over how well the factory load performs in your particular rifle, and handloading will improve the accuracy, as you tailor a load to it. I like the concept of the Valkyrie for the AR 15 style gas guns, but in a bolt rifle, I don't think it offers, other than having factory loaded ammo, a performance advantage over a warm loaded .223 Ackley Improved, which has been used with 90 grain bullets for years for long distance shooting. Good luck, enjoyed the video, keep posting.
