    Here is my thought in the new Valkyrie barrels.... I think it caught a bunch of people off gaurd. The cartridge is designed around a 90 pill that needs a 1:6.5 twist or faster and there isn't a large supply of .224 barrel blanks in 6.5 or 6 twist out there. There are however a TON of 7 twist blanks that are used for 223 so a lot of the barrel finishers (WOA being one) probably are just cutting 224 Valkyrie out of them. I'd like to see how well a proper twist barrel shoots the 90 grain bullets but it would most likely be at a loss of the lighter bullets... maybe even a slightly longer throat so you can use the whole magazine, increase powder and maybe gain more velocity.

      @JohnnysReloadingBench  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I honestly expected to see some excellent accuracy with these lighter bullets. If that was the case I would have been in total agreement with you. Until I work out some decent accuracy with lighter bullets I'm not going to blame the twist on poor heavy bullet accuracy, ya know? Still, I think 6.5 twist will end up being the preferred choice, especially with the new 95gr SMK. I'll get it figured out and be the first one to agree with you if you're right!

      Johnny's Reloading Bench yup... The lighter bullets may like a different powder possibly. It's WAY too early to write it off yet for sure.

      The Savage MSR's in 224V seem to be getting really good accuracy. I think a lot of the parts manufatures are using regular 223 barrel blanks in a 1in7 twist and they need to be making 1in6 twist rates. Which really negates the use of lighter projectiles. That's why I think the 6.5.Grendel is a better cartridge cause it will stabalize 100gr to 140gr projectiles pretty well.

    Interesting learning process on the Valkyrie reloading. Had some sizing problems a year ago, ( 223 ) learned my lesson. Now when I reload a batch I check the first few after a run through the die in an LE Wilson headspace gauge and in the chamber. I will then check a few about every 30 - 40.

    MOA shooting a 77 gr sierra bthp at 3000 fps, I don't really see anything wrong with that. I bet that would take you to a grand no problem. I have a receiver set waiting to build a valkryie, your the first person to really show accuracy for this new round. I would like to see a solid copper round gmx , Barnes, swift!

    Word is the 1/6 or 1/6.5 twist barrels are what is needed for the heavier bullets. Its bit of late breaking news as mostly it was 1/7 for the initial release.

    Regarding the case that would not chamber@ 15:00, I don't remember where I picked it up, but I make a practice of sizing, turn the case in the holder 1/4-1/3 turn and running through the sizer again. The second pass has little pressure, so I'm not overworking the brass.
    It seems the person showing me that believed it led to more concentric cases. YMMV

      One thing to consider, the neck portion of the die sizes the neck down slightly smaller than the diameter of the expander ball in the die. So when the case is drawn out of the die, the expander ball can....expand... the neck to the proper size. So to truly avoid overworking the brass in your case, I would be sure to lower the case just enough to clear the neck sizing portion and allow free rotation, but not lower the case enough to hit the expander ball. Then run it up again.

    Case stretching-- I have found that most case stretching happens from pulling the neck expanding button through the neck. It pulles the case with it. If you resize the case and the neck first and push the neck sizing button down through the top of the case mouth when expanding it you will see very little case stretching if any.

    I pulled some of my 75 TMJ bullets from Federal AE and replaced them with 75 grain Amax at different lengths.
    I had some trigger difficulties that I attribute some of the horizontal spread too. My trigger was gunked up and the 34 degrees didn't help matters. This was causing the trigger to be very inconsistent with where the sear would brake. It's been cleaned and lubed now and back to its old self so I will retest 2.300-2.280" where it shot it's best. Also of note, with the longer seating depths I had less ejector prints on my case heads.
    Even with the trigger issues I noted above it appears there is a node at or very near 22.8 & 23.2 grain of AC-Comp using 80 A-max. This powder was not able to reliably feed using my JP SCS H2 gen 2 buffer/spring combo, it would only push the BCG back enough to eject. Brass case heads were nice and clean, no ejector marks present. I'll try 22.8 & 23.2-23.4 again with my standard weight JP SCS. All groups were 5 shots, I had a couple one holers.

    I think a major issue here in grouping is jumping an entire grain between charges. I generally move 0.3 grains at a time. This can show substantial accuracy issues. Also with that heavy if bullets I would be looking to seat them at max COAL to take advantage of as much length as I could. I would redo this test with a little more care as the bullets you are using are extremely well shooting rounds. You should also text the 77 grain Berger tactical. I wish Berger would do a 90 grain with this hybrid ogive. To add I’m not a fan of Allianz powders as I have had much better accuracy out of Hogdgon powders. I would look to Varget to produce great results. To add the 1:7 should be just fine to stabilize the heavier bullets. They say 6.5 but I would look to that being more for 223. As stabilization deals with RPM than what actual twist is. Airborne arms is my go to for a great barrel. Barrel ad bolt to JP specs without the JP price.

    Im just starting to doubt that these super long 22 caliber Match bullets fly well when driven to 3000fps. Maybe they just dont spin fast enough from short barrels. Maybe theres a reason PRS shooters are using larger 6mm bullets. I appreciate you shaking down 22NOS and 22Valk for us. You will figure it out! Great Video.

    • @hardtarget2359
      @hardtarget2359 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      nc_classics _ I think so to. For these long 224V projectiles you need a 1in6 twist or higher which really limits the size of projectiles you can shoot. I think the 6.5 Grendel is a better cartridge. You get petty good accuracy in 100gr to 140gr projectiles. Which is a good cross section of choices.

    Federal was driving the Valkyrie market initially, so they could use Lake City's 6.8 SPC line to supply the brass. Their idea was to use a longer bullet than the AR-15 ammo (90gr) and spin it faster for stability. It could compete or exceed Grendel or Creedmore performance using an AR-15 platform. So, to do that, the barrel/chamber makers need to go to 6.5 : 1 twist. Now the MBA's show up with their "let them eat cake" attitude: " Let them use 7:1 twist, or 8:1 twist." Sad.

    I hate to say it, but of all the Valkyrie vids, I'm just really losing faith. Built an AR with the Ballistic Advantage barrels that guarantee 1MOA with factory match ammo. Couldn't group at all with 88ELDMs. By contrast, I'm pretty consistently shooting 1/2" with their 6.5CM 24" barrels. So they can make a good barrel (and I know how to shoot a good group!). Just can't get the Valk to work, and apparently neither can most people. Seen many, many, many groups getting shot with a rare 750 or so, but mostly over 1 and even some 2+ groups. Horrible for what sounded like it had so much potential. Maybe I'll just forget the 224V altogether and work on a 6mm. I really wanted to like it!

    people are getting a little too negative about this cartridge too fast. accuracy is not specific to a cartridge. what we are dealing with is a round that barrel and component manufacturers had no time to experiment with, and that lacks the 30 encyclopedias worth of reloading data that established rounds like 223 and 308 have.
    im seeing a VERY similer story evolving here that we saw with 6.8SPC. give it two years.

    RCBS small base dies ALWAYS feel a lot harder during resizing than their standard dies due to it resizing the the area just above the case head so as to be a smaller base. That's one drawback to smallbase dies for semi autos.
    Edit: the ONLY candidate for forming the brass IS 6.8spc. That's the parent case used to design the cartridge. Prior to Federal buying the design, it was called 22-6.8

      Paul Harveu not technically made from .30 Remington as that round/casing has been out production for a decade plus. But it was based on dimensions from the .30 Remington case yes. If you can find original .30 Remington brass it is usually on collectors tables at gun shows.

    Don't apologize for working! We all have to do it. I wonder if another Lee .22 caliber FCD will work for the Valkyrie. Something to check may be the torque of your QD flash suppressor/mount. If you strong armed it, perhaps that is causing poor performance with all the bullets. Also, is that scope shooting well with proven loads in your .223 AR? Perhaps double checking on mounting issues too. How about your gas tube? Is it sliding into the carrier key without any binding/excessive interference? Just throwing ideas out to check as I too am puzzled by the poor performance thus far. Good luck! I know you will figure it out!

  • @THutch556
    @THutch556 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jrb, you seem to shoot better with a suppressor. I’m guessing that will tighten your groups some. How are you installing the muzzle device? In my experience over tightening (even a little) of your muzzle device will destroy accuracy. I torque to around 20 foot pounds, many long range shooters barely Tourqe there muzzle device at all and use rockset to hold the muzzle device in place. Would like to see a group or two with bare muzzle, no device. Also you should be able to get away with less shoulder bump running the small base dies in my experience. But with regular dies it’s not uncommon to need 5 thousands or so for reliable feeding in a semi auto. Thanks for the vids, keep up the great work.

  • @slimjim7411
    @slimjim7411 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting my results have been ragged holes with a 1:7 twist 24" heavy barrel with comp. But I'm only shooting Federal ammo and as I understand it while the diameter is the same the shape of the bullet for the .224 valkyrie is not the same. So if true reloading for it currently is kind of moot because the BC of the valkyrie bullets are what gives it's great long range performance. It simply doesn't slow down nearly as much as other rounds even other .223 rem loads because it has a better BC.
    I believe this is done by using a thicker copper jacket, and less lead allowing for the bullet to be slightly longer without increasing the weight.

    I bet this cartridge with the 62gr Barnes TTSX would be a death ray on coyotes, deer, and hogs... I was never really interested in this cartridge but I'm wanting something that can get good velocities with the heavies to hunt with in the AR15 platform. I've heard people who built the AR10 styled rifles in 22-250 or 22-250AI were having some issues with reliability and that's the last thing I want in a hunting rifle so I'm more then willing to sacrifice a few hundred fps with this cartridge...

    This is early in the ball game for 224 Val. I'm curious if it will be more forgiving was a faster twist barrel. At least the cartridge isn't eating itself like 22 Nosler did.

    According to RCBS, their small base sizing dies also bump the shoulder back a couple thousandths of an inch more than their standard fl sizing dies (for same setting) in addition to sizing the body down to minimum saami specs. It looks like you didn’t have any chambering issues with only bumping the shoulders back .001-.0015 if that was your final setting?

    Good video but wondering why you want to change so many things at once (bullets, powder, suppressor, bolt carrier, upper, etc). If you now get good groups, what caused the change? All of the above or just changing harmonics of the barrel by adding the suppressor, or the new powder, or ?????

  • @cameronlea7633
    @cameronlea7633 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m curious if you have given thought to why you are getting a seesaw pattern in you groups while firing? One shot an outlier and 2 smaller groups of 2 shots for a lot of the groups shot... something to do with the feed ramps, crimp, or neck tension maybe? I know you want it to shoot well out standard mags but maybe try single loading?

      @colsoncustoms8994 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Guess it's not for you then. 90 grain smk's with a stupid high bc is the point, although I would argue those 77's moving @ 2,900 fps from an 18" barrel is extremely relevant as well, or a 90 grain hunting bullet.

      I saw a man build a ship in a bottle once. It really looked like a pain in the ass and when he was done, he couldn't even play with his ship.
      So, my point, why is it so important to have some all important point.
      Sometimes, "just because I want to" is good enough.
      I got into 300 Blackout just because I thought it would be fun to mess with all the load possibilities, and this will be similar.

      @neilharris4462 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Halfdollar 86 if you have a savage, I'm sure there are companies that are cutting barrels for them. All you would need is the headspace gauges and the proper bolt head.

    • @halfdollar86
      @halfdollar86 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neil Harris yes I have a few Savages but I don’t want to change the barrel yet. They still have a lot of life and are very accurate. I’m not in a hurry. Someone will make one one day.

    • @kn761
      @kn761 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would you limit yourself with a valkyrie in a bolt action? 22-250 already exists as well as 220 swift. Just have a manufacturer make one of those with a 6.5 twist and you have a gun more powerful than any valkyrie.

    • @halfdollar86
      @halfdollar86 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      K N I have more powerful bolt actions. I don’t want it for power. The only reason is I just simply want one. I think it is a very interesting round.

  • @ElTerrible666
    @ElTerrible666 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why do you graduate by 1.0grn vs. 0.5grn? Do you hand trickle? Have you tried not crimping?
    I don’t load 224V but you did mention successful loads in 223R with the bullet weights you’re using for 224V. I load for a 223R 1:8 using 77grn Nos. Cust. Comps. The powder/primer combo is IMR4198 and Tula SRMs scooting above 2700fps and getting .5MOA consistently.
    I full length size (AR platform), seat the bullet .002 shy of mag length and I don’t crimp. I hand trickle to get up to my specific charge weight and check the weight twice.
    What are your thoughts? CHEERS!

    • @neilharris4462
      @neilharris4462 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He mentions in the video that with little load data, he just wants to characterize the load. Mainly for velocity and pressure issues. He fully admits he could be missing possible accuracy nodes. The barrel probably isn't broken in yet and the powder choice may not be optimum either. It's still pretty early.

    • @ElTerrible666
      @ElTerrible666 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neil Harris people still “break-in” barrels?
      I like to foul a clean barrel with 10-20rnds and then shoot a load work up or accuracy.

    check the bullet holes on the Nolser 60 grain. They look oblong on video. Maybe over spinning. CFE223 would be very interesting behind the 77 grain SMK to compare to the MK262 series. Thanks for the video and have a great day.

    • @jimhans1
      @jimhans1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      David Peterson overspinning a bullet won't cause an oblong hole. Only under-stabilizing or not enough velocity will cause a bullet would do that.

    • @Mike-xi4zt
      @Mike-xi4zt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jimhans 1 I agree you are correct. There are no physics equations that demonstrate increasing the rate spin causes less stability. Including one out of balance. The only way increasing spin can cause a bullet to be less stable is if the centrifugal force causes it to deform and or come apart. Most modern bullets are designed to handle high velocity and high rate of spin.

  • @fee_lo8346
    @fee_lo8346 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was very excited about this round. So far nothing I see makes this look like feasible long range cartridge. Factory ammo is a no go. Reloads? No accuracy. Heavy bullets don’t work. If all we got is a 60 grain varmint round... who cares? Got lot of those already. I’m starting to question the barrel maybe? Wrong twist rate? If it can’t shoot the 90s there’s no point. Or maybe they just wanted another ar 15 caliber to throw out there? Time will tell.

    With my 223/556 RCBS seating die I too get that little ring around the nose when seating 75 grain Hornsby bthpm. It actually deforms the nose making it a little narrower. Idk how much it effects my accuracy considering it shoots like shit but then again so do different batches of my 53 grain v Max’s that I guess depending on where the moons at shoots sub MOA or like a sawed off shotgun at 100 yards.... love your videos man.
