I think the face looks good, he looks tired and of course younger. The pants don’t look to bad either, they are quite baggy in the movie, especially around the ankle area. Nice, comprehensive review as usual. 👍

I got this figure in 2012, I never thought his headsculpt was bad, and when I put on “Raiders” to do my posing with the base & idol, really looks spot on. Some people don’t like the PERS eyeballs, but I think it’s cool.

Hi. I love the video! One minor thing is that the pistol is a browning hi-power and not a 1911. They look very similar though so it is a common mistake

I was gonna point that out. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed.
I heard he was originally going to have a 1911 but it was hard to have safe .45 blanks so they swapped it out for a Hi power
@@GrosvnerMcaffrey Yes, .45 ACP blanks didn't cycle reliably in the 80s. I feel like this is a case of circumstances leading to a positive. The Browning is a unique character element and gives Indy an interesting touch he wouldn't otherwise have if he were carrying the more common 1911. The only hitch I find is that Indy wouldn't be so surprised by the penetration of the P-38 in Last Crusade because he was already familiar with the penetration of the round because of the Browning. However, how many times do you really get three guys to line up for one shot?
@@athos1029 i look at it like this. If you're traveling abroad particularly in Europe it would make more sense to have a 9mm on backup because it's easier to find than .45 in those places as apposed to every gas station like in the states

I love this figure. I actually traded a vehicle for scrap and used the money to get him. I knew then I was serious about collecting 😆 I have some of the same flaking happening on the jacket but luckily it's under the arm and not too noticeable so I can still get some great poses out of him. Loving these retro reviews!

So glad you were able to finally see the original Indiana Jones! I remember back in the day when the only Harrison ford figure you could find was the Kenner Han Solo 12" and the Kenner Indiana Jones 12". I had both. Interesting fact, Han had blue eyes and Indy had brownish. Indy also had this hideous felt version of his fedora. I recently found (didn't realize I still had them) the Sideshow Medicom Indiana Jones and the Holy Grail Indy and Henry Jones figures. It is amazing that so many companies have trouble doing an accurate Harrison Ford head sculpt.
Yep I’m so glad we could see it in the cinema the way it was meant to be seen! There are certainly a lot of options out there!
The eye colour has been notoriously hard to pin down since the beginning though - they photograph very differently in different light. And that's a big part of a likeness. So not all their fault as what do you go on beside photos? Not everyone gets to meet him in real life!
Got this figure when it came out and it’s really good. The headsculpt was was never totally right, but the whole package was great. Honestly, this was a figure that didn’t need PERS and I think it contributes to the face looking just a little off

More than a few times I eagerly watch a review right when it drops just to find that the figure or accessory is already sold out or waitlisted by my preferred vendor. Getting the reviews early has really paid off for me personally. Not to mention the giveaways and behind-the-scenes content!

I bought the Sideshow Temple of Doom figure, and bought all the DX05 Accessories. I also put a Jacket on my Temple of Doom figure which makes my Sideshow Indy kick @$$. I always defended Sideshow Indy when he was getting bad reviews.
I 100% agree the Sideshow Indy head sculpt looks waaay more like Harrison Ford, then the DX05 head sculpt.

I think the sideshow’s eyes and chin are better. But I think Harrison’s iconic crooked nose is better in the Hot Toys one!

Thanks so much for this video Justin! I've always been on the fence about this one so video, turning the figure and seeing how the light reveals the sculpt really helps so much over just still shots. I'm fine with the pants because they're accurate to that slightly baggy 30s style that yes he does have in the film.
But the eyes!! Yep one thing I always do whether figures or say cg in movies is cover the eyes. You can tell if everything else is great (for me this edges out the SS/ToD one) instantly. But eyes in both those cases are easily the most important thing when it comes to being truly convincing. And Harrison Ford is infamous for having a really really hard eye colour to nail down. it's been a thing forever. For me the HT fig looks like they've given him dark brown eyes, and the video didn't actually clear that up a whole lot (tighter closeups please!). He doesn't have dark brown eyes!
Part of that too is as you said the recessed eyes problem which will exacerbate it. That issue was common with the oldest HT figs and one thing that always gave me pause. Seemed like a manufacturing thing, and not just pers, because that got better too. But once they licked it the figs took a leap in terms of convincing sense of reality. I agree with VHS needs a rerelease!
(even if it's not affected despite not being there in the old videos your DJ/JB announcer manner makes me a bit crazy, but maybe it's just me - and obviously a few others - but I love the videos, thanks again)

I wasn't collecting when this was issued - $250 USD on Sideshow! - and missed the Sideshow TOD Indy so I was really looking forward to a comparison, thanks for that, Justin. I'd love HT to tackle Last Crusade Indy in the near future.

WAY back when this figure first came out, everyone figured out that hot toys basically HAD applied some sort of guyliner.
If you carefully removed the guyliner, it automatically improved the look.
I did on mine.

My mum made me a custom 1/6 Indy back in 82' using my Roger Moore Moonraker as the body and head sculpt.Fast forward 37 years and I picked this set up. I really love this as it goes-yes you need to play with the eyes otherwise its a wee Thunderbirds puppet-ish, but as a package its a stunner. If you don't know where Indy's look came from, check out Milt Caniff's Steve Canyon comic strip from the 40's(and while your at it go watch 'Spy Smasher' on TH-cam to see how influential this classic 40's serial was on Raiders and Temple of Doom) Thanks Justin, another sublime distraction from this 1/1 scale world.

You're spot on. Having owned both these figures I can say without doubt the Sideshow head is a better likeness to Harrison Ford. It is mainly the eyes that lets the HT one down.

Oof I almost had to unsubscribe when you said you never saw the film... haha but sounds like you remedied that! Also, I believe the first pistol is a Browning Hi-Power rather than a 1911, but they do look quite similar. Great video, now I will have to resist the urge to track one of these down for myself.

Hot toys harrison has a stoic look because the eyes look dead and gives out a animatronic feel to the figure.The sideshows face looks better i think but the eyes look bad kinda like keep deer head that's been to the taxidermist lol.Great review im glad you got him i need a indi in my collection this is my favorite one.

The best likeness sculpt of Ford so far is the Dark Toys Rick Deckard (which is a great figure, in general, although I recommend using a different body for the clothes). IMO, nobody's done a better sculpt of Ford, it's just dead on. Some people are using it for Indy, as well, as with the hat on, the Deckard hair isn't an issue.

I also have them both the sideshow special edition with 2 sets of 3 stones (brown and glowing ones) also have the Henry Jones (sean connery) from sidshow them three around the diarama is awesomeness +10 The sideshow is very cool cause it has those whiplashes shirt on the back from temple of doom

When this came out I remember being incredibly disappointed with the likeness. IMO I thought you really have to squint hard to see anything of Indy in there, so despite being a big Raiders fan I never got him. I snagged a few of the accessories (the base and the idle) from eBay but that was it. Despite the crap body I'm quite happy with my Sideshow one. Still waiting for the ultimate Indy.

Nice review. Too bad you couldn't get the gunbelt on-- I'm going to have to pull mine out and see if it's deteriorated as well.
You missed a detail on the display base. If you choose the "Well of Souls" backdrop, the cardboard insert on the base itself can be flipped over with sandy detail to match.
And if die-cast accessories and real leather materials are a plus for you, I highly recommend hunting down the 1999 Toys McCoy version. Despite its age and desirability it's still selling at reasonable prices on ebay. The body is nothing special, but the head sculpt is simple and effective.

YES, this iconic figure needs an update immediately! Wanted to buy this figure so badly, but could not justify it because the Harrison Ford likeness was so off and the clothes looked too "clean". No PERS this time, HOT TOYS... just give us two heads!

I bought this when it first come out. It is a brilliant. I was disappointed with the 2nd Sideshow version from 2nd film.
It is, I love it!
SS did put out a 1/4 scale Indy statue that is awesome though. I got it and after being away for work for a long time (movies ironically enough) I returned home to open my room/office for the first time in about a year. Indy was incredibly and appropriately covered in spiderweb! So authentic! 😄

Hot Toys has come a long way. Wow. Good figure but the clothes definitely look bulky and oversized, especially the hat. It’s too tall. His skin is also super yellow. Hopefully we get a new Indy at some point
