New episodes dropping every Tuesday and Thursday! 😊
I worked in a record store from 1978 to 1984. I remember the slow start the Thriller album had, our store manager actually returned Thriller albums back to CBS. Our local CBS representative was astounded. I had been listening to the album before the big hits were released and I was just floored by the quality of the songs and the production. Billie Jean, Wanna Be Startin’ Something and Human Nature just really kicked in after a couple of listens. In fact, it was clear every track on Thriller had the potential to be a Top 40 hit. At the time of the Thriller release the music business was very segregated. I believe that is why our store manager sent the albums back to CBS, after the album took off we couldn’t keep enough of the albums in stock to satisfy demand. My boss gave up on the album too soon, just like the CBS execs almost declned to release the Thriller track as a music video. Michael’s pursuit of perfection overcame those barriers and Thriller raised the bar and set new production standards.
i remember in 82 being in junior highschool here in charlotte NC. and some guys singing the girl is mine,,,,,,first time i heard it,,,,,knew nothing of the album it was from,,,,,then months later my brother asking me if i had heard this song from micheal jackson called beat it,,,then the motown 25 show came on,,,,after that it was crazy,,,kids dressing like micheal jackson etc,,,,,from 82-85,,,,,micheal and prince,,,,i will never forget how big they blew up in that period, amazing
Thank you so much for these videos! I only recently discovered your podcast and it is simply AMAZING !
As a younger fan (22 years old) who unfortunately didn't truely know who Michael Jackson was until after he passed away, it is simply wonderful to be able to have more insight, not only into the context of the album and how the reactions were at the time but especially the priceless stories all of you have to tell ! Thank you so much for putting this out here for us.
Looking forward to watching all the episodes!
Much love from a moroccan fan
I was born in 1979, so growing up in the 1980’s as a kid was awesome all because of this one man. The Michael Jackson mania was real! The “Thriller” album was everywhere, Michael was everywhere, and his influence on the entire culture was everywhere! In 1983, as a four year old, as you can imagine, I was initially scared of the Thriller video, but eventually I got used to seeing the dancing zombies because the video was in such heavy rotation. My mom bought Thriller on a vinyl record and I remember just staring at Michael on it’s cover because he just seemed so magical. I was a little older when “Bad” came out and that was a pretty big deal too. Unfortunately, I remember that’s when the press started describing Michael as being a little weird and eccentric. With no social media back then, whenever a Michael Jackson video was released, it was broadcasted simultaneously on different television networks. He was just that huge and the release of his videos literally became an “event.” His sister Janet was popular back then too, but her big brother was indeed the man! I can’t think of the 1980’s and my childhood without thinking of Michael! Facts!
Think you so much for this interview with Matt Forger great Man great engineering
👍👍👍👍👍
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 THE BEST!!! THANKS again! i appreciate each episode! Can't here enough about Michael!!!!😘❣
Amazing🙏🏼🙂 👏🏼
With all my respect to Quincy , Michael Jackson’s show his ability as a song writer. Beat it and Bille Jean .
When Matt says the Thriller video was an event, he's not lying. My mother told me the department store she was working at the time had tvs. She said when Thriller premiered, everyone stopped in their tracks to watch. Never seen anything like that prior to Thriller. It set a mark for music videos.
💛💛💛
I don't remember a video for the girl is mine. I do remember a video for Say Say Say
Any chance of having Chris Currell on?? (Mr. Synclavier himself)
I have a few questions, would be delighted to hear your answers! Thanks a mighty!
-how many hours did you generally work per day? How many days per week? How many months in total?
-when working in 3 studios, which instruments were done where? Did Quincy, Bruce and Humberto stay in one particular studio or did they move back and forth?
-how long did it generally take to capture one part? (like 1 drum part, 1 synth bass, 1 rhodes, a lead vocal etc)
-did Bruce work with SMPTE offsets to fly in parts or was that all done manually?
-Generally, it’s only when you have worked for a longer time with a synth such as an Arp, Jupiter etc. that you can get the most of it. Were you familiar with all the synths that were rented Anthony?

@@storiesintheroom Thanks, where can I find the date and time for the upcoming stream?
As I recall the was NO video for “The Girl is Mine”. “Billie Jean” was the first and in fact the story goes that MTV didn’t want to play it. They finally did and the rest is HIStory. “Beat It” was next, followed by “Thriller” December 1983. I believe the home video was sold with a extensive “Behind the scenes Making Of Thriller” which MTV aired, this I believe was negotiated between MTV and the video makers to off set some of the cost of the making of the video.
It's mind-blowing that Thriller almost wasn't released as a single or a video!!!!! This is a glaring example of how wrong music executives can be sometimes!!!
I can't believe that they didn't make a video for Human Nature or Wanna Be Starting Something. By the way. There was no short film for The Girl Is Mine. A small fact check.
4 thumbs up
5 thumbs up
The Girl Is Mine music video? What is that? I've never seen an official music video of that...
There’s no video for it .
there was no video for girl is mine what the heck is steven ray talking about, hes mixing up the girl is mine with say say say
You can say the same thing without being outraged, of course many people tend to forget one or two details when you’re trying to hold on to real clear memories of having interacted with ALL TIME GREATS like Michael Jackson and Quincy. I would forgive them misremembering things every time, I’m just happy they are sharing more details of MJ with us.
@@Smileater one or 2 details? lol he said there was a video for girl is mine,
