Yet another instance where you logically explain something that at first glance seems counterintuitive. Even though I've been tossing at 1-o'clock for flat serves with my pinpoint stance, I figured that out through trial and error, and never really understood why that was necessary. AFAICT, you are the only tennis TH-camr whose explanations actually make logical sense. Thanks for the insight, and for sacrificing your abs, too 😂
P.S. Any comment(s) on how ball toss position telegraphs our serve intention? Fed seems to be able to hit all his different serves with a toss that always looks the same. How does he do this?

Great video once again where I found good tips for myself as always :) Whenever possible on your videos (for serving), can you include serves from deuce side as well please. I know it may not mean much to you or many but I feel that there are big differences for serving from each side (deuce/ad), at least I feel it, even visually. Thanks again.

Speedy recovery Nick. I had an Ab tear in March, played through it and had to stop in May. The tear was 17mm x 13mm wide. So look after it as they can take a long while to heal.

    Just WOW!
Just today I had find the pinpoint the best way for me to serve. (as a beginner I am still experimenting a lot)
I discovered that the pinpoint gives me the best feedback feelings and noticeable higher ball speed
But I was struggling with the toss (seldomly an issue with platform stance), really not undestanding why I had the feeling most of my tosses felt slightly too much in the 11 area
    Just ask Nick :)
Very well explained and apparently easy to fix
    Many thanks

Sorry about your abs. That actually happened to me too, a couple weeks ago, when I tried to hit a serve toss at 10 am! It taught me to never again toss the ball like that when I want to do a flat serve.

I had some great tennis lessons from one of your compatriots in Lovran over summer and I believe he got me into some good practice to help mitigate the problem (though we never completed as many sessions as I would have liked).
He would stand on the line behind me and push the raquet handle against my shoulder to keep my shoulders twister rotating almost parallel to base line I imagine to help ensure ball came up at 1 o clock.

Much appreciated analysis, my serve is a mess so will need to take back to basics and this step is key. It's quite cold in the UK right now so most of the tennis players tend to go into winter hibernation ... just wondering if you've ever put a video together detailing the key things to keep working on in the off season to help aid muscle memory ...or timing when you won't be playing again for many weeks. All the best and hope the ice does the trick

Excellent video coach Nick !!! Thanks. Give you an idea how my toss was ruined: knee patella syndrome pain. My brain negated to toss the ball even though I had no pain... (PTSD). Experimenting with the toss like you clearly explained helps big to 'recover' consistency... including during a match. Big Thanks again.

that’s true. When my toss goes to 11o’clock, i endup hitting with some kick in the first serve. But I enjoy doing that, as it will be little surprise for opponent too.

Hello Nick, I have changed to pinpint serve to get max power. But in a pinpoint serve, instead of moving the back leg to front, I am naturally able to move the front leg near to the back leg, jump and able to serve with much power than normal pinpoint serve. Is that a good technique?

i have a hard time finding the right serve grip. it sometimes keep slipping back to the wrong grip AND the coach at my club (great coach) tried showing me the proper grip but it feels wayyyyyy too restricted and that i have no flexibility at all in it with the wrist or forearm. i can get decent spin and power in the grip that feels right to me, but according to him my knuckle could go further around, but again, it restricts my wrist and forearm and feels extremely locked. any tips ?

  • @umutkara739

Thank you but what about the contact point? You say you must toss the ball at 12 o'clock. But thas it mean the contact point is on 12 o'clock? Or when we toss at 1 o'clock thas it mean the contact point is also at 1 o'clock.

Gerardo, Injuries are tricky. Especially lower back on the serve. Check with your doctor first. I always tell my students, don’t go into pain. In other words, there are physical limitations as far as range of motion. Find a style that feels comfortable.

Hi Nik, love the videos. i wonder if you have thought about doing a video on diet. you gave away the pizza that you used as a prop for what you need to be a pro player. so wondering what you eat. it should be an easy one, you eat anyway, so just take out your camera. also i often hear about pro players mixing it up between pace, depth and spin. not sure how that works as i assume if they reduce the pace or depth, its easier for opponent to hit a winner. you might rightly suggest i make such videos. but come on Nik , you have a flair for making videos. you might have other ideas, so thats good too

  • @drbonesshow1

This is ridiculous. Instead of wasting your time on the toss you might learn some physics to rethink your footwork, which is the main reason for a weak serve. Try the Reverse Step-up (pinpoint) Stance using the back foot for the push off the ground and the front foot for direction forward and greater rotation into the court. Physics can't fix stupid, but it can make you less ignorant. Sounds like a plan.
