    The Katana is a programmable amp. You can get great feel out of it if you know how to program it. It is basically a huge programmable distortion pedal that is loud.

    Word I use id organic is the Valve, the Katana is a great amp but something about the Valve amp that cannot be replaced by Modelers I live in a small flat I've had modellers before the best one was VOX VTX 20 currently I just have the Katana Mini great little amp but I am looking at a Marshal DSL 1 cr Valve Amp for home use, I want that Valve sound I hate pissing about looking for tone with the modeling amps I just want plug the guitar in and go ,

    I recently got a Katana head in a trade and I paired it with a Carvin 112 cab and it sounds great. I also have a Blues Junior and everything always sounds great through that. The Katana replaced a Roland Cube 30. I did side by side and the Katana sounds a bit nicer than the Roland. The Katana can go headphone, or down really low on 50w or just run the internal speaker.

    I own a Friedman SmallBox 50 and did own a BE50 Deluxe, both incredibly loud amps, but can play at bedroom volume at night in my apartment without losing a ton of great tone. Granted they do sound better turned up. I have an ID core 10 stereo amp that doesn't sound bad on certain settings. I thought I'd need it, but turns out I really don't. I think the difference in sound of the Boss and Marshall, at least in this video, was really negligible. The Boss was close enough as for the listener's experience. But when it comes to the experience in the room, I agree with what you're saying 100%. Something feels more artificial about modeling amps. The Boss makes an amazing amp, but the feel and response in the room is going to be much different with a Valve amp. If you're recording and doing a bunch of post editing, you can get away with modeling amps, no problem. The more transparent signal of a good valve amp will certainly expose our weaknesses and make us better players. Plus they just sound, react and feel so much better in real life experience. What I mean is turn that Boss up and it sounds the same. Turn that Marshall up and get those tubes cooking and it will inspire playing so much more. It's just a better experience. Very nice job with the video. I subbed.

    It does seem harder to justify having expensive valve amps nowadays when things like the katana are so good,
    my THR 10C Yamaha gets a lot more use than my tiny terror but I only play at home, Playing live would be different
    cup of tea, I think the DSL40 is a bit of a hybrid anyway so best of both worlds they are all great though spoilt for choice. Great playing as always, I want a DSL now sounded brilliant.

    • @Paul-D
      @Paul-D  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theres definitely no wrong choice now thats for sure. I enjoy plugging into whatever method. I just feel if your really splitting hairs there still something in the feel of a proper amp thats hard to replicate even at low volume. We could get even better tones if i was cranking it up haha.

    • @Donger-wf9kc
      @Donger-wf9kc ปีที่แล้ว

      The way to justify it is this.
      Are you a beginner to intermediate guitar player playing at home and needing to get crunchy distortion sounds without getting your neighbours to hate you? Go for the Katana.
      If you're a touring musician or a player that appreciates the tube sound much more than a beginner would than go for a tube amp.
      The katana sound great on low volume whilst a tube amp doesn't. Nevertheless, a katana would not stand a chance against a tube amp in a live setting. Doesn't matter how good you programmed your katana that amp will sound awful compared to a marshall or fender tube.

  • @Tonedefy
    @Tonedefy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a Katana 100 head, first gen. Tone sounds great, the problem is, amp died on me during rehearsal. Wont even turn on anymore..Worst part is, no local amp techs are interested in touching it. Oh and good luck getting a hold of someone from Boss/Roland's Service Center. So its essentially just a big paper weight at the moment. To be clear, I'm the original owner, amp was mostly played in the bedroom till I started actually rehearsing in a band setting with it this year.
    Amp is 4 years old so obviously out of warranty! That said, I also own a Marshall Vintage Modern and a Peavey Classic 30 that are both almost 15 years old yet are still running strong! So there you go, buyer beware!!!

    My Katana II 100w around the house gives me most of what I want. Cranking up the Blues Junior is nice but it's not as versatile. I can blow out the windows with my Fender Hotrod delux so it's not on much. My Blackstar 5W is a nice amp, good cleans and a great dirty channel and behaves better than the Fenders. All in all my most used amp is the Katana, if I started playing live it probably still would be the most used.

    I have gigged a SS amp - Blues Cube Artist since 2016. Excellent amp, great for gigs and home plus lovely feel under the fingers. BUT if I play my victory vc35 out then valves wins out. There is just additional magic about valves. Look I am clearly not a tube snob having gigged SS so long. SS is nearly but it still misses a certain magic, particularly when the tone is hotter. I think for home players SS is a very good option and the Kat is an excellent amp easy to get good sounds out if at lower volume levels.

      I don't think it's NEARLY as much of an issue as most folks might think. I've been playing tubes for 23 years, hauling them everywhere w/o shockmount cases, down long bumpy dirt roads to austere rehearsal spaces, playing hundreds of shows, knocking them over, etc. and I've had pretty minimal upkeep costs. For the most part, most amps just keep going and will be solid and reliable for a very, very long time with no intervention ( if it isn't broke, don't fix it). They are not delicate flowers. So far, replacing a preamp tube in V1 position in a marshall head and fixing a broken knob on a mesa rack pre have been my only expenses as a tube amp owner. 23 years. And trust me, the modeling isn't "there yet".

    The only valver amp I've ever owned is a Valvestate 100 which isn't 100% tube, but as an apartment dweller it is just an enormous amount of amp that would never be used, so I got into the modeller side. Definitely more warmth from the Marshall. The Katana sounds a little brittle by comparison, but at the end of the day it depends on what and who you're playing for, if anyone at all.

    The "Marshall" tones I've dialed in on my Katana 100 head are very good, and generally more versatile than the DSL40 (usable at all volumes, etc.). The DSL40 comes alive at higher volumes, but if you can't turn it up, it's fizzier than the other.
