US-American diver Greg Louganis is frequently called the greatest diver of all-time. He won four Olympic gold medals in the 3m Springboard and the 10m Platform Diving events. Starting at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics on home soil, Louganis claimed the Gold medal both on the springboard and platform for the first time. Four years later, at the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, he repeated his gold medal journey, becoming the only man and the second diver in Olympic history to sweep the diving events in consecutive Olympic Games. Prior to the Final in Seoul, Greg Louganis suffered a concussion after his head struck the springboard during the preliminary rounds. However, he still managed to qualify for the Finals where, showing perseverance and determination, Louganis delivered an outstanding performance to complete his incredible comeback. Easily the most beautiful diver ever. The Chinese divers are technically brilliant- no question- and Tom Daly (UK) is close to Louganis - but no one has ever matched his indefinable grace. The way he lifts his legs, his control, the grace of his movements - the combination is unmatched. Being able to watch Greg over and over is a joy I thank TH-cam for all the time.
I totally agree. The Chinese are technically brilliant but they hit the water so fast and wth no passion. Greg is just poetry in Motion and seems to float in space b4 "sliding" into the water.....plus he always elicits an emotional response.

He is to diving what Baryshnikov is to dance. His form and grace in the air, precision and control and making it look easy, as well as beautiful. Gorgeous to watch.

Anyone who has truly mastered a skill has transformed it into art, in my opinion. We call it martial arts, why wouldn’t we consider other sports the same way?
Diving is gymnastics into a pool, gymnastics is ultimately a form of dance, and dancing is an art
The GOAT of Olympic diving. His name belongs in that elite class with great athletes like Biles, Phelps, Lewis, Flo Jo, Torres, etc. Even after that NASTY head injury and stitches, he came right back. NOBODY did it like Greg Louganis. He’s an incredible role model, and he’s still in great shape, and still uses his platform to help people. Outstanding human being. ❤️

I agree. I remember watching him dive when I was little. I marveled at his perfection. Nobody can dive like Greg Louganis. The best diver of all time in my book.
He can do the difficult dives for sure but I thoroughly enjoy his 3m performances of some of the simplest dives there are.. he makes them look like masterpieces.

I agree that he looked great, but the level of difficulty then compared to now is light years apart. In, my opinion, gymnastic is the same. I watched a documentary recently with Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton and their gold metal routines are as basic as the come.

He was so steady and consistent that whenever he planted his feet at the end of the diving board, you expected to see beauty, grace and flawless execution.
He is so elegant, poised and with perfect form. Amazing control.
Unbelievable. I watched him do all these dives back in the 80s on tv during the Olympics, and seeing them again is still mind-blowing.
Greg had a “stillness” to his efforts. His economy of motion and immaculate technique make him the best I have ever seen. 💜

@@mannyguzman8222 Yes more than 30 years ago... He still resides in California with his husband and trains dogs for a living and travels the world. He's 61 years old. Still young if you ask me. Lol... And still in GREAT shape for his age.

Watching Greg dive still gives me chills! His rips are still impressive! He was a huge reason I started diving, growing up in San Diego in the 80’s if you dove he was not just a hometown hero but a huge role model!
Only one name comes to mind when it comes to diving and it's Greg Louganis,he was flawless....
Also for me, once I read "he was the Nadia comaneci of diving", but unfortunately he wasn't that popular even though he got the perfect scores as well.

Born in 2007 so I’ve never heard of Greg Louganis but got this in my recommended and this guys is AWESOME 👏🏽🤩❤️

Maybe judges back then didn't want to give 10 even the though the diver deserve so. Just like gymnast.
The rules for tucks used to be stricter than they are now I think. If feet and knees weren't close enough together they took more points off.
He was truly amazing. He made diving pure art. I don't think any other male diver comes close to him.
I remember seeing a slo-mo of him doing a swan dive years ago, and he had the most serene, peaceful expression on his face the whole time. Amazing training and talent.
I watched this 35 years ago and I’m still at awe of Greg Lougainis while watching this. He is so perfect! I love him ❤
Amazing diver. Always seemed to have time to spare when diving. Never looked hurried or rushed or tense. Just perfect control as if gravity bent to his will, and he only fell when he wanted to.
He made it look so easy. So graceful.
Seeing his minimal splashes is so satisfying to watch...seems no one can really do that these days. He looks like he could do this in his sleep.
The hair style preferences have changed, now they don't have hair so it's harder to prevent spashes.
I'd suggest watching the Chinese divers

I never watched or appreciated diving, until I watched Greg at the Olympics. His talent leaves me speechless

As someone who can't even float, from watching his dives, he seems like He is extremely technically sound and consistent. Like in this video I felt like they were showing me the same dive over and over. Is they were different dives but because he was so technically strong it just looked perfect all the time.
I remember watching this Olympic performance. He is truly the master. He gets such height and is completely vertical upon entry consistently. It is a beautiful thing to watch.

I was mesmerized by Greg Louganis’s for years & probably never missed a televised performance of his competitions. I remember being completely horrified when he hit his head on the board, during the Seoul Olympics. I was literally crying tears of joy as he continued to bravely compete & win yet another Gold Metal. Greg was pure art in motion whenever he dived & I personally don’t believe that anyone else has ever come close to the same level of grace as him while diving.
He was amazing but there have been some which are at his level althought the graceful side to diving has gone since the required dives are no longer part of the competition phase when you're at senior levels

I miss the required dives. I know it could get a bit tedious but we never see simple dives executed so beautifully anymore

His scoring wasn’t fair ! Greg dove a purrfect “ 10” with each and every dive regardless of technical difficulty! I’ve never watched any other Diver who did so with absolutely nearly every dive!

@@Arrica101 Agreed not every dive was a 10. But wouldn't you like to know what some judges were downgrading him on. Some of those dives were so well executed I can't imagine them being done any better. Would be interesting to hear the judges critique.

BEST EVER! Unlike anyone else, he seems to linger in the air, after launching himself higher than anyone else (whether springboard or platform). Enters the water like slicing into warm butter, no splash on many entries. He is beautiful as a duvet, a kind encouraging diving practice partner, a decent human being with unparalleled compassion and humility. Grace personified.

Wow, this takes me back. I was a collegiate diver (Palomar Collage in San Marcos) during those days, and would practice at Saddleback college in Mission Viejo. Greg was based at that college and prepping for the Olympics in 1976. I got to watch him practicing on the 10 meter platform while my team mates and I were working the 1 meter and 3 meter boards. Never got to meet him personally, but that was one of my "proximity to greatness" moments in my life. Great times...
My coach at the time was Bernie Wrightson, the 3 meter gold medalist at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. I made the California State Championship finals in 1977, (20th over all on the 3 Meter, just shy of All American). I had a shot at the 1980 Olympics, but the boycott (and a women entering my life) killed that. Bernie believed I had what it would take to get there. I was good, but not Greg's caliber. I did a 4 1/2 once on the 3 meter, but barely 😉

My mum who died in August at age 96 just so enjoyed watching him dive
My Mom did also. We had dancing background so she admired his pointed toes and how graceful he was.
My father loved him. My father had done diving and he was in awe of Louganis.
