Motoman, I'm with you 100% on the need for car makers to go back to putting buttons and switches in cars, for the most frequently used functions, like climate controls, instead of the current trend of putting them on the more difficult and unsafer to use touchscreens.
I love my G80 M3 Comp Xdrive. It makes a great family road trip car, but it also is a very nice track car. I made a trip to Monterey with the wife include a track day at Laguna Seca, where I got 7-20 minute sessions. The temperature never budged, and the car just kept going and going. The tires got pretty tired by the end, and the rear brake pads eventually hit there wear sensor (after 8500 miles, 2 track days, and hard city driving). Then the car drove home as a comfortable cruiser. I have an extended maintenance plan I negotiated down that covers the brakes, so the rear pads and fluid got done for free. I haven’t had a single problem with the car, it’s the best built car I’ve ever had. It is a far cry from the older M cars known for being unreliable.
I would definitely pay thousands more for physical knobs and buttons, I just purchased a AMG C43 and trying to control the infotainment system is an accident waiting to happen, and extremely glitchy, sometimes it works most of the time it doesn’t !
Great vid MM! Agree with you on all points. I’d pay $1k extra for analog gauges, and more to rid the interior of laptop computers for the entire dashboard. If Porsche didn’t exist, I’d own ///M BMW products exclusively. I love their bikes (RT) and love their ///M cars! It’s annoying to see that BMW Individual colors are significantly less costly than Porsche PTS colors🤬😱 I’d select that color on an ///M2! 🇩🇪💪🔥
i'm sooo happy to see that silver wheels are making a comeback! i may have to purchase a set of these for my '24 m3 comp x-d when it's time to replace the tires 😎
That's a very bold color, even courageous I might dare say, as the late sir Humphrey would oftentimes eloquently put it. Kudos for not having black wheels though. Excellent work, like always, M.
It is amazing what reliability does to resale value. I think the longer these prove reliable, the slower they will depreciate. Also it gets 30mpg on the highway!
Just picked up a 2025 G83. I really wish it had physical HVAC, but otherwise the single screen is awesome. I think it looks dramatically better than the original 2 screen setup.
I enjoyed the different perspective of this video from your usual, Motoman. BMW does so many things right that it's not hard to see why it's so popular. I just wish their M models didn't feel as numb as other luxury products in the market.
I have had 3 new 6th gen zl1 and 3 c6 z06 and 1 c7 z51. This year I bought a 2025 m2 auto and a m240. Performance, fuel economy and reliably so far is mind blowing! I will never stray from bmw now as long as they have the b58 and s58. Unfortunately the new tu2 b58 has been tampered with and for 2025 might be the last year for the m240. The m340 has received the unreliable b58 tu2 with port injection.
@ The tu stands for technical update. The second technically updated engine is the TU2 aka gen 3 b58 B58B30M2. But yes the cylinder de activation is one of the main reliably problems.
Thanks...might have been useful to have brought the Alfa Guilia QV and Caddy's Blackwing to the discussion as competitors as well. Regarding the Cayman comparison, the key differentiator is that the average Joe/Jill can live with the Bimmer as a sole car, tougher to make that case with the Porsche.
We did check into the resale of the Cadillac, and it was close to the BMW @ 73% return of original base MSRP however that, like the Lexus, came out in 2022. Passed on the Alfa as they have abysmal reliability and as such, don't belong in a comparison focusing on being able to use a performance sedan on a daily basis.
@@MotoManTVthe MY2020+ Alfas are much better. If you’re reviewing the G8x as a daily you should really be including the Giulia QV. It’s actually a much better daily in terms of ride and suspension.

For an over the top but magnificent example of manual buttons and traditional dials please have a look at the Pagani Utopia - recently previewed on Harry's Garage channel. Thank you for the great review! I appreciate your insights. Based on your professional experience, for resale value, desirability, and overall reliability, would you lean towards the M4 Competition xDrive or the M3 Competition xDrive?
12:17 FK YEAH id pay extra for a "mechanical dash" meaning they would have two dash lay outs on option. Mechanical and Electronic and let the consumer chose. If they can have all the other options on offer such as exhaust which is just as major as a dash component, they can do it. The mechanical dash would consist of mechanical guagest tastefully crafted, a reasonable sized screen, and real mechanical switches and buttons for all the key touch points of normal day to day operation while hiding the rest in the screen. Simple as that. Id love to see the take rate if they did this.
This ^^ ... add a smaller nostril package! Edit: Everybody, knee-jerk fanboys especially, remember that those lovely cost savings on the ugly electronic panels are not (hardly) passed on to you!
I am here to learn - as always best informed motor journalist!. It's all about the experience now - less the speed. It's about how you feel. I also would very much appreciate a manual version - including manual transmission and analogue dashboard. What would I pay for it? 20k+? In one generation we would. learned that they will be the mostly searched after models. Like manual right now. Some models like Aston Martin or Ferrari with not so good automatic transmission got now after market manual options, which will set you back around 50k+ and its a good business doing it.
I'm in the market to trade my g80 and thinking of going g82 this time around. the dash does suck but nto a deal breaker. If they did have an option for a more analog setup, I'd pay for it.
Still can't get used to that front end. Reminds me of an Edsel. And what's with the inverted Hofmeister kink? And, yeah, totally agree that cheap TV screen (IP) has no place in this car.
I have no problem with the screen. I drive a 760xi with idrive and I never adjust climate control while driving let alone while having fun driving through Mulholland Drives curves. If I need to change something I use voice control however that’s rare. No i wouldn’t pay more for buttons or analog gauges. I would like more customization of the screen like Ford does with the Mustang or Mercedes with their screen
The Wireless CP in ALL BMWs has been strong for a while now. When they first moved to wireless connectivity, there were issues in pairing and staying paired but that looks to be addressed at this point.
This color isnt on the BMW configuration tool on the official site. Is there a way to access the hidden colors? Ive also seen TH-cam reviewers with the yellow which isnt on the site as well
More touchscreen!? No! BMW (and VW) should take a good look at what Mazda does. You may not wanna hear it, but playing “Can You Aim and Hit the Pixel on the Vibrating Touchscreen With Your Moving Finger In a Jittery Car” is a dangerous game while driving.🙄
I reckon the seats in my M4 are almost as comfortable as the couch in my loungeroom, its crazy fast and handles like a much smaller, lighter sports car. In Australia where I live, I'd be looking at an extra 100k to step up to a 911. At least. Yet there are a lot more 911's driving around the streets of my city than M4's.
My G83 M3 manual is a MUCH better daily driver than my 992 Carrera T. The power deliveyr in second gear is what you’d want and expect. My kids fit in it. It’s a great car. Love my M3
Me personally, I'd like to see you bring that thing to DC's I495 at 5PM and see how much fun you have with that stick. That's why I like my EV with self driving. But as far as the buttons 100% agreement. You figure volume, and climate systems won't change, so why put those things in a screen? I get it, someone from Ford said each button in a car cost $10million to develope and I get it, they want you to use voice commands. But I want buttons for those things, I don't use my voice command for anything but the phone. It would not be hard just to have those systems as hard buttons and make everything else in the center stack.
I would rather have an IS500 and spend some money on "better" suspension if I had to, but really I'd just leave it alone. I've been burned by BMW in the past and I'm not ready to open up my heart again.
If you know me, you know I am a HUGE sunroof/open top kind of guy. If I did choose one of these as a daily, I would opt for the sunroof over the carbon roof as this example was equipped. Yes, I get the the logic of removing weight high in the car but I am living in reality - somewhat - and not using the car to make money racing.
@@MotoManTV Unfortunately sun roofs are not an option in UK for M3/ M3 Touring/ M4 which is enough of a big deal on this type of car to make me stick with the M340i. I'm sure not as special to drive but I love a bit of light and air!
I wish the G87 came out early enough that there were ID7 versions of that car. I'd much rather have a G87 over a G82 (I think the size of the M2 just makes for a more fun coupe while still having plenty of extra space), but at least you can still find a gently used G80 or G82 with physical controls. As bad as the touch controls are here, I think it's still better than whatever iterative step the new 5 series is (ID9?). That just feels terrible to use in comparison. Hope BMW does a course correction on the interior space in the near future because the current path has been pretty disappointing.
@@captainholmes As you have seen in my episode on your car, LOVE that car. Feel strongly it is better dynamically than the larger CT5-V Blackwing but the combination of the low rent engine and still terrible interior lead me to the BMW. th-cam.com/video/ICROUtr1WZ0/w-d-xo.html
11:00 I find the dash lay out here and others like it to be the laziest ever in interior design. Its like they absolutely didn't care and quite literally just slapped a screen up on to the dash. Im shocked wires arent poping out of the back. Like it would kill them to put that in a bezzel? I get everyone loves the tv screen best buy look but still DESIGN it better. Put some thought and effort here. This isn't a Chevy Spark where i think even that gets a bezel. Just complete shit. Ill say it.
12:17 FK YEAH id pay extra for a "mechanical dash" meaning they would have two dash lay outs on option. Mechanical and Electronic and let the consumer chose. Everybody, knee-jerk fanboys especially, remember that those lovely cost savings on the ugly electronic panels are not (hardly) passed on to you! I would add to others' comments supporting an analog gauge and physical buttons and dials package..... traditional HOODS for the gauges, lest they just grafted on analog units right onto these screens!! At the very least they could have bothered to curve and radius these panels and give them a solid backdrop/mounting rather than looking like a 50s-60s drive-in theater. This car is so close to perfection.... only to be let down by this baloney.
I want to love the G8x series. It’s got a lot going for it, relatively reliable, great performance and great interior quality. But the exterior styling is awful, the iPad on the dash is cheap looking, the ride is overly stiff and the drive isn’t terribly engaging. Then I found the Giulia QV. I can’t go back to BMW now.
Imagine driving a manual anywhere near LA on its clogged up freeways... ? How many clutches would you through not to mention the repetitive strain injuries from shifting in and out of 1st gear over and over and over.... .. Manuals are an anachronism.
I have done it, and it is not what you make it sound. You leave greater gaps, coast more. It trains you to be a smoother driver in traffic. Compare it to the binary driving experience of average automatic driver that only knows gas or break and generates pulses in traffic.
@@MotoManTV Less than 2% of all vehicles are sold with a manual. Manuals are no longer cheaper, no longer more fuel efficient and no longer offer a performance advantage over a modern performance auto such as a PDK or ZF... but hey - I get the nostalgia... if you can afford a toy car in the garage with a manual that gets hauled out on the weekend for a run through the canyons... well good for you... But the manual has been dying for decades.. the last F1 car to use a conventional manual gearbox was 1995. The amount of time people spend in their cars today - overwhelmingly - is in bumper to bumper traffic. Intelligent, stop and go cruise control is a godsend.
@@rdefacendis It's good to observe the bigger picture: 80% of cars sold in EU has manual transmission. 4 out of 10 light vehicles globally had manual transmission. Automatic transmissions cost more, and we can complain why cars start to get more complex and cost more... All these conveniences come with a price tag. Developing markets are not ready to absorb the extra cost of going automatic. Are you saying that a Used NC Mazda MX5 is not cheap entry to the world of manuals? You can find manual cars (used or new) at almost any price point. If you rent a car in EU it's likely to be a manual, unless you pay up for more expensive higher class models. It pays to know how to operate stick shift.
@@rdefacendis I would absolutely opt for manual over auto on just about every car - trouble is that very few cars are now offered with the manual option. For me it's not about performance, I just love the additional interaction and sense of control which manuals offer and autos just dull out. Just don't ask me when I last had an auto box!!
I don’t see the market for this. If you need more practicality, get an M3. Otherwise get an M2 or Cayman GTS, depending on where you fall on budget. The M4 is in nowhere man’s land when it comes to the sliding scale of sports car and practicality
@motomantv, great episode, but please don't be mad at me if I get electric, I've been thinking about it since I received a promotion, and now the place I work has free charging.
I understand that M3s ansd M4s are great but there are way too many 22 year olds that live at home with their parents who own them and it just makes them unappealing
I have a fully optioned out S205 C300 Wagon with sports pkg (only in Canada and other parts of the world) and I would hardly say it is a crappy old c300. If one drives a Hyundai, Kia, every Toyota or Honda sedan or any American sedan then I would say those are a crappy car, and uninspiring drive. Unfortuanely Mr MotoMan not all of us can afford a GT3 Touring as our daily driver. You lost my respect after following you from the very beginning and I am sure my advertising world buddy Makse would side with me.
The single long tacked on screen with no buttons is an abomination. That alone is a deal killer. It is so distracting and tedious to have to use a touch menu for everything. No thanks.
Nice colour. The new 911 makes it look even more a bargain. When are you reviewing any new 911 variant? I would not pay extra for physical HVAC controls, BMW should include it in the price of a manual. Citroen can afford to go back to buttons (google their latest models), so why not BMW?
I love my fully loaded covid purchase 2022 BMW M4 Comp in Brooklyn Grey. It a Garage Queen. Driver her only in sunny California weather on Saturday or a Sunday. I'm not a fan of the new dashboard. So Glad, I don't have that option. I should have added CCB because the Black wheels are always dusty!
I hate the staggered diameter wheels. The first thing I would do is 19's all around, ideal a square setup if possible. The other thing it needs desperately is a normal gauges screen option! Just give us a menu with classic white on black or orange on black round dials. There is no excuse to not give the option in a menu.
haaaaah ! shit happens , m4 could not make it work for me , so baby buggy it is .....x4 m comp , yeah tuned and all. i can even bring my furball , she has a condo in the back , no fur in the cabin , what a blessing . man oh man oh man , what a batshit crazy car truck thing . coutry roads are a blast , whish i could be in a m4 . as they say shit happens . as reliability mine is perfect . do yourself a favor , get yourself one .
I agree the move to screens is most likely cost driven, but to steal man this trend, manufacturers would argue you shouldn’t be playing with knobs and buttons while driving anyway, just wait til you’re stationary and thus screen based features are less of an issue
So if you want to adjust the cabin temperature, you need to pull over? Nope. Knobs and buttons aren't distracting....phones, in cabin conversations and eating are much more distracting.
Those of us willing to pay more for analogue gauges and an HVAC area with hard buttons very likely already have another fun car at home that’s very analogue 😊. Such options would be a massive hit with car reviewers but nobody would actually end up spec’ing them on our daily drivers! ‘25 M4 Comp LCI + ‘96 Integra + ‘21 F-Pace SVR in chilly Canada 😉
They should have some how integrated the screen its this big ugly thing just poking out ....looks lik they said we cant be stuffed so lets just plonk it there...and its probably because of this ugly screen Im not buying one how sad is that ...I would pay extra for a beautiful integrated dash with dials!
Fantastic video. Answer to Question: Yes, emphatic 'Yes', I would pay more for a real dash / instruments. How much? - $1k, maybe more. I had a 430i loaner this week with that screen setup... not a fan. These care are so magnificent, they deserve better, & better is 'real' instrument / UX design setups. Love what BMW is doing in general & especially with these M4s. Drove the crap out of one a while back at the PC in Thermal, fantastic!. Also, absolutely love the 930 wheels they have on offer this model year.
Imagine paying a premium for german engineering only for the company to not believe in their own engineering to the point of charging $90k for a car with a 4 year 40k mile warranty. 😅 go get a Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. It has 640hp with instant torque and a 10 year 100k mile warranty for $30k less than this car. BMW is a joke 😂
The color is AWFUL!!! Just horrible. Don't like PINK at all!! I also like old school buttons, and not so many finger print touchsrcreens. And the BMW application of a large iPad with feet is horrible execution.
Hate that screen, wouldn’t even buy because of it- glad I got the first iteration with a real dash- although digital- which I also don’t like. Edit: a real dash, and physical buttons is worth $3k on the final price
Analog is dead. Reviewers have been complaining for 10 years. I think it's time to let it go. Also, there is an efficient way to use AC, use the climate control, tap the temps. There is a button for max ac on hot days Take the time, set up the car then move on.
the instrument cluster looks terrible...an actual eye-sore. classless, hideous, annoying, fragile, problematic, distracting and lazy. after watching the entire video, I'm glad you brought it up...and would I pay more? Not only a hard no, it's a hard pass on buying the car at all. I'm much more likely to seek out an older version and let this entire generation collect dust until I can swap in the engine from these into an e30 or e39.
Motoman, I'm with you 100% on the need for car makers to go back to putting buttons and switches in cars, for the most frequently used functions, like climate controls, instead of the current trend of putting them on the more difficult and unsafer to use touchscreens.

To be fair the 3rd TU version of the N63 is pretty reliable now
A revised front fascia away from greatness!
Would you comment on sunroof vs none
I prefer sunroof. Functionality is a priority for me.
Yeah but the ct4-v blackwing exists. Titanium connecting rods
This or the CT4 Blackwing?
This.
Thanks for the weigh in, ive had my ct4bw for a litle over a year and im starting to yearn for more power and a bigger back seat.
If only we could have the s58 in the ct4!
Love your videos sir, thank you for everything you do!
They give us SEAT options! Thats major.
Whats the car with knockoffs?
th-cam.com/video/QpPP0RUUw9s/w-d-xo.html
@MotoManTV beautiful
OMG I bought a yellow or Ruby Stone car that's pretty funny
why is this car pink?
Question 2 why does this guy have to wave his arms around with every word spoken?
Imagine driving a manual anywhere near LA on its clogged up freeways... ? How many clutches would you through not to mention the repetitive strain injuries from shifting in and out of 1st gear over and over and over.... .. Manuals are an anachronism.
I have done it, and it is not what you make it sound. You leave greater gaps, coast more. It trains you to be a smoother driver in traffic. Compare it to the binary driving experience of average automatic driver that only knows gas or break and generates pulses in traffic.
100% agree with @David_Journey . . . I have had manuals as dailys in NYC, London and now LA. No issue.
I’d pay extra…
I’ll have an m3 or a blackwing
Crappy c300?
That screen alone would keep me for even considering this car. Sorry BMW, you just don't get it.
I don’t see the market for this. If you need more practicality, get an M3. Otherwise get an M2 or Cayman GTS, depending on where you fall on budget. The M4 is in nowhere man’s land when it comes to the sliding scale of sports car and practicality
Awesome for leasing, 💗 not for ownership, like a Nissan GT-R. 👍🏾
Lexus LC500 is the only reliable 500 HP coupe.
That pink is horrid. My maintenance bills on my Beemer were obscene. That is all
The single long tacked on screen with no buttons is an abomination.
Love the colour. Not so much the wheels.
One of few things I hate about my rosso corsa 2024 M4 vert is the damn climate touch screen. Otherwise, a fun, usable, trouble-free dream of a car. 🎉
Between the color, the vertical grill and the enormous screen awkwardly attached, I couldn’t imagine any serious person wanting that thing.
They should have some how integrated the screen its this big ugly thing just poking out ....looks lik they said we cant be stuffed so lets just plonk it there...and its probably because of this ugly screen Im not buying one how sad is that ...I would pay extra for a beautiful integrated dash with dials!
reliable aster warranty period?
Zero steering feel
Fantastic video. Answer to Question: Yes, emphatic 'Yes', I would pay more for a real dash / instruments. How much? - $1k, maybe more. I had a 430i loaner this week with that screen setup... not a fan. These care are so magnificent, they deserve better, & better is 'real' instrument / UX design setups.
Love what BMW is doing in general & especially with these M4s. Drove the crap out of one a while back at the PC in Thermal, fantastic!. Also, absolutely love the 930 wheels they have on offer this model year.
🤢🤮
Imagine paying a premium for german engineering only for the company to not believe in their own engineering to the point of charging $90k for a car with a 4 year 40k mile warranty. 😅 go get a Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. It has 640hp with instant torque and a 10 year 100k mile warranty for $30k less than this car. BMW is a joke 😂
Those screens are ugly, no design flair, very bland
The color is AWFUL!!! Just horrible. Don't like PINK at all!! I also like old school buttons, and not so many finger print touchsrcreens. And the BMW application of a large iPad with feet is horrible execution.
Ewww brother ewwwww
New BMWs are looking insect-like
This is hard to watch... Perhaps if you did it at Circus Circus my eyes can get around it.
And put on a clown outfit for the love of GOD that color.
Screw that, get a Porsche! 👺
Hate that screen, wouldn’t even buy because of it- glad I got the first iteration with a real dash- although digital- which I also don’t like.
Edit: a real dash, and physical buttons is worth $3k on the final price
Great color. But, my god, is the M4 an unfortunate looking car. Gives off heavy 1991 Pontiac vibes.
The pink BMW is perfect for the new image of the brand - gay.
Analog is dead. Reviewers have been complaining for 10 years. I think it's time to let it go.
Also, there is an efficient way to use AC, use the climate control, tap the temps. There is a button for max ac on hot days
Take the time, set up the car then move on.
You think wrong
the instrument cluster looks terrible...an actual eye-sore.
classless, hideous, annoying, fragile, problematic, distracting and lazy.
after watching the entire video, I'm glad you brought it up...and would I pay more?
Not only a hard no, it's a hard pass on buying the car at all.
I'm much more likely to seek out an older version and let this entire generation collect dust until I can swap in the engine from these into an e30 or e39.
