- Putting the tool post grinder to actual work after refurbishment! Grinding a KZ1000 start clutch hub back smooth, damaged by weak springs on the starter clutch engagement pins.
Dumore to the rescue. I dig the machining videos.
Another nice job taken care of IN HOUSE. RIDE SAFE OUT THERE!
Brilliant save on that starter clutch Tom, and that Dunmore is a sweet piece of kit, 😎.
Assuming it keeps working. Thanks.
Cool new tool
Thank you sir, love the machining videos. A friend of mine just bought , or I should say, traded labor for a real nice lathe that needed some tlc, and I'm now looking for a deal on a used mill, thanks for the videos and encouragement!!
Ps, do you go to Barbour vintage weekend? We are going to try to go this year if time and $$$ (and wives) allow😢😢😅
I’d get the starter clutch grit blasted after machining. I’ve just fitted a new clutch and the surface finish was very dull, certainly not polished. Tell your customers to use only mineral engine oil as synthetic or semi synthetic ruins these sprag clutches, I know from my own experience 🙁. Love your uploads 👍
Every one I’ve seen was shiny. It’s got Rotella T4 in it now. Conventional. Cheers.
I've got some bikes approaching 200,000 km with any sprague clutch issues.
But some friends' bike will slip the sprague if the oil is cold and thick, but never slip hot.
This one slipped hot rather than cold. Made sense when I saw the springs.
I was told that repairing that way never work . I have an Honda CBR 450 with the same problem and after watching your video i will give it a try . Many thanks !!!
I can’t see why it wouldn’t unless a lot of material is removed. Couple thou isn’t much. The pins have to jam between the ramps and the hub equally. These ramps look a bit worn but I figured they were worn about the same. Even then, each pin can move up its ramp as much as it needs but taking too much material off would probably exceed that limit.
well last year i spent 245 pounds buying a new old stock one from germany for my z1r i will have a friend dress the old one and keep it
Tom, could you have used the cutter on the lathe and done the same material removal? Just wondering as I have never worked a lathe.
No. Not taking off that little material. You’d need ceramic inserts for that sucker it’s harder than a coffin nail.
Hi Tom I have a KZ 750 E my starter clutch has packed up not twice iv just ordered now springs and pins . My question is I’m in South Africa want to take not gear to an engineering workshop but now sure of the correct terminology to ask? The other question was what’s the original dimensions when new thanks for a great channel dig it Arnold
I don’t know the nominal dimension. I thought about measuring but the surface was basically peened by the pins and I figured it wasn’t accurate. I’m not sure what you are asking regarding terminology. What is it that you wish done? The grinding? You can simply ask them to grind the surface smooth if that’s the case long as it’s concentric with the center bore, but remember, this was a test, I wasn’t sure it would work. But figured it would. Might not work in your situation depending upon the condition of the gear hub. I figure that if they have to take off more than 3-4 thou imperial, get another gear hub.
Thanks for the reply Tom been thinking about the about it see on my journal it’s got flat spots but the section closes to the gear looks ok like you said pins don’t get there . Maybe I can get a measurement off that ? And have a hardened sleeve pressed on . With new pins and springs again.
The cheapest gear I can find is 100 to 180 euro if u can find them . And a shit job on the kz750 . Thanks for your help and advice
