I love Rochester, New York and I live here and I live in one of the toughest neighborhoods in the city and I own my property and I’m not leaving. My family has been here for a very long time and my family has no plans on leaving the city of Rochester.

After just visiting there, the surrounding freeways had a bunch of work going on in different places… but the freeways were in really good condition and clean. Didn’t see too many potholes, and the traffic in general was so much better than LA it’s like another planet. ❤ WNY

My dad took a job at Xerox and moved us there in 1965 hot humid muggy rainy summers full of mosquitos followed by more grey skies and rain to freezing rain, ice storm cold clammy rusty winters, then add the punishing real estate tax burden to live in that shit hole, I got out the day after graduating high school in 1973, moved to San Diego, California where it's 72 degrees and sunny for 300 days out of the year, and never looked back. I have nothing nice to say about Rochester or New York State. I live in endless summer WITHOUT mosquitoes and can drive or fly to world class skiing on mountains exceeding 14,000 feet, making anything back east from Bristol to Killington look like icy/muddy bunny slope.

Monroe County or surrounding suburbs of Rochester is fine. lots of great universities,a pretty sad night life east and Alexander and Monroe ave or local dive bars if youre trying to stay in the suburbs. food variety is on par with some larger cities, there's quite a bit to do if you like out door activities skiing, boating, hikes, parks, but you do need to search for them, but its kind of a diamond in the rough. And depends on what you've experienced that determines your view of 585

I agree. I grew up around Keuka lake throughout my childhood and complained about the area all the time. Especially about the degrading infrastructure and the weather. Been in San Antonio for 6 years now because of the military and I’m planning on going back up to the Rochester area when my contract is done. To me, Rochester and the southern tier region is a “grass is greener” argument.. here we go 50-80 days over 100 with some rising above 105 with feels like over 110 lmao.. I spend over an hour of each morning in traffic unless I want to wake up 2 hours earlier to drive to work and wait in the parking lot for an hour and a half to avoid that.

Move to the East Side suburbs. I'm sorry but it's literally like a completely different city on the Eastside, everything bad about Rochester becomes good and you can still cherry-pick what you want out of the Downtown / Greater Rochester area.
Geographically the Erie Canal / Genesee Valley region cuts off the city development from the East Side. It's nearly crime free, has every type of retail / grocery store you need between Eastview Mall and the Bay Towne / Ridge Rd areas of Webster. Everything is better on the East Side. I know the West Side of Rochester is steeped in tradition, multi generation homes and a lot of pride, but the East Side of Rochester is a true slice of heaven, with the Finger Lakes region only 30-90 minutes away.

I lived in Rochester for a year. People are *not* welcoming of outsiders. They all seemed to have all their friends since childhood. Also I never saw a more segregated city in my life. Almost everyone seemed miserable there. But hey, drinking is treated like a winter sport there. 🙃
    Speaking of......
Winter! Yikes! And the polluted Genesee river! Remember the Fast Ferry to Toronto? 😆
Dinosaur BBQ was great! Don't buy a garbage plate! Gross! I bought one just before I left and had indigestion for a week.
There was snow, then rain, then mud, then a nice week, then *hot* & *humid*, more rain, then a nice week again with changing leaves, then it all starts over again. And ice storms. Okay lightning bugs were cool. And thunder storms were pretty awesome too.
¾ of the city is a deeply depressed and dangerous ghetto (the Crescent) and the South wedge isn't as nice as they would have you think. Try Brighton or another place outside the city.
Don't go to Niagara unless you can spend the entire time on the Canadian side. US side is horrible and run down. In general, you should just not move to Upstate NY. Stay south of White Plains or at least Albany.

Some things you omitted, one needs two of everything, a lawn mower, and a snow blower, winter tires, summer tires, snow shoes, regular shoes, winter junker car, summer good car. Salt on the streets will "eat" your new car in no time, batteries today cost between $200 to $300 dollars in Rochester they need to be replaced often. In New York state the government always has their hands in your pockets, you will be nickle & dime to death.
How do I know all of this? I am a Rochestarian Edison Tech graduate, when Edison was on Clifford Ave back in the day. I left Rochester in 1978 never looked back, I miss the Amerks, the House of Guitars, the World Wide News , most of all visiting the Sibley' s Christmas display with my folks when I was kid, for those of you born too late, you must lament never experiencing Sibley. By the way we own a 2,400 square foot home, pay less than $2000 a year in taxes. Rochester 's golden years are way behind them. When the number one employer is the University of Rochester you got nothing to offer skip Rochester.

Rochester is one of the worst places I've ever lived. When you're not into sports and are sober there's really not much else to do. There really isn't any concerts unless you want to listen to local bands playing Party In The Park covering "Welcome To The Jungle" very poorly. I'm not a fan of cover bands. The music scene there is horrible. Can't really enjoy going outside because it's brutally cold in the winter and disgustingly humid in the summer. There's better cities with more going on. Would not recommend Rochester to anyone.

    Top 3 Cons:
    1) VERY high taxes ($300,000 house you would pay $8 - 9K a year (~$700 month) and high sales tax rate of 8% on almost everything you buy
    2) High violent crime rate (was 48th murder rate in US in YR 2020)
    3) Unless you ski, winters are long (Nov - March)
    Top 3 Pro's:
    1) Surrounded by fresh water
    2) Great golfing
    3) Reasonable traffic

@@MackRDavisJr What you mention are NOT neighborhoods, other than Cobbs Hill! They are suburbs. The City of Rochester is a dangerous and dead city. Want to know how to tell? Read about what has happened to the downtown business district. Xerox sold their signature tower. Kodak Tower? Permanently closed! Kodak Park? It was razed in 2005. The rotating restaurant on top of the First Federal Building at Main and State doesn't even rotate anymore. The expense to maintain it was too much. There aren't any customers anymore. The Gannett building? EMPTY! Midtown Plaza? A VACANT LOT! Read about the occupancy rate of the downtown business district. You can fly around the downtown area with Google Earth or Maps, and literally see all the empty downtown buildings. You can do street view and see all the abandoned storefronts. Businesses come and go, but when NEW business won't even occupy empty commercial and professional building space, the actions, or more accurately, the complete lack of reinvestment action tells you that the place is DEAD! . . . And I haven't even mentioned personal safety! . . . Ha Ha Ha . . ."Stay on the East side." . . . What? Don't you want the go see Susan B. Anthony's house? . . . "A Garbage Plate?" . . . Nick Tahou's WILL definitely give you the REAL Rochester experience. Head over the where Bull's Head Plaza used to be. . . St. Mary's Hospital isn't even a hospital anymore. . . Oh, but you could buy a house off Genesee Street with an empty lot next door because THAT house burned down, and nobody thought it was worth it to rebuild, for say $70,000. Of course, the TAXES on that HOOD house will be a mortgage payment for a $300,000 house in perpetuity! Suburban schools are not the Rochester City School District. Rochester=Detroit=Gary, Indiana=Chicago . . . Just check out all the recommended videos that are on the sidebar here on TH-cam!

Anybody thinking of moving to Rochester take heed! This video is so full of misleading facts it is laughable. I lived in Rochester 33 yrs. Saw it go from a thriving city to another stagnant rust belt city. Potholes are the least of your problems! There are only two seasons, fall and winter. The amount of rain and gray skies is through the roof. The gray skies will eventually affect your mood. There aren't many good paying jobs anymore. They left years ago. The most factual statement regards the high rate of taxation on everything, of which you see little in return. Also no mention of crime or poverty. Beware!

Whine much. Please leave if u hate it. While its certainly not the best place on earth its not as bad as u make it out to be, although i live in a nice suburb. There is PLENTY to do here. You can find live music nearly every night, lots of outdoor activities. Finger lakes very nearby. Toronto only 2hrs away adirondacks, etc etc. Its what you make of it! If you're a positive person you'll find positives.
