    Didn't know the Makina had a brass body, I always assumed it was a really light, plastic body just from seeing photos of it. Another rad episode, fellas.

    Self-correction: The camera was manufactured by a Japanese company who bought the rights to the (German) Plaubel name. 👌🏼

    • @JanPBtest
      @JanPBtest 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, it was manufactured by Mamiya, except for the folding lens mechanism which was Plaubel, and for the lens itself which was Nikon. That folding mechanism was/is no small feat. The recent and very modern folding medium format camera Voigtlaender Bessa III is _still_ larger than the Plaubel.

      JanPBtest it wasn’t manufactured by Mamiya initially, though. The design came from a German professor and the production was always in Japan, but Mamiya only took over when production became too complicated. The lens is obviously Nikon. And the Camera was serviced by Plaubel in Germany up until 2016, now only half a dozen people in the world actually have parts, which is a real pain.

    The Makina 670 was actually made by Mamiya (you can tell the film spool holders look the same as on Mamiya 7, also the traditional Mamiya slightly rounded film frame corners are in the Plaubel as well). The double-wind was introduced in the 670 model as the single-wind 67 model had problems with users who were a bit rough: the single stroke winding gear ratio was simply too high. One thing about the Plaubel is that its lens has a _fantastic_ bokeh. I’ve never seen it anywhere else, it’s just pure silk, astonishing. Another interesting bit about the Plaubel is that its light meter is FAPP a _spot_ meter, less than 10 degrees. Obviously the camera was not geared to a casual user. Whenever I shoot with it, I always point it to what looks like the proverbial “18% gray”, like a shadow, and calibrate off that. Once you get used to it and know where to find your 18% gray, the photos are right on the nose, the meter is very accurate. Mamiya 7 is great too, I like its automatic mode, the quietness, and the best part for me is its 43mm lens. It’s one of the _best_ lenses EVER MADE, by any manufacturer, for any camera, in any format. Yes, it’s that good. It’s a very famous design featuring almost zero distortion: the original 10-element Biogon designed by Dr. Ludwig Bertele while working for Hans Wild and Carl Zeiss. The silly irony is that the _name_ “Biogon” is a trademark owned by someone else (Hasselblad), so Mamiya cannot use it to describe this lens. And on top of that, the lens made by Hasselblad which calls itself “Biogon” is _not_ Bertele’s design but a simplified 8-element affair. So kudos to Mamiya for going the extra mile by going back to Bertele’s original patent, and manufacturing it despite its higher complication and cost. (The design itself is public domain, mercifully.) Oh, yes, I loved your video! :-)

    Another great video, and its always good to see Dan and George make an appearance. Would love to see an in depth video of those two cameras, I've always been intrigued by the medium format rangefinders, particularly the Plaubel. And they are quite pricey! A decent example will run you anywhere from $1300 - $2000 US for the "standard" version ( Makina 67) and the wide model (67W) even more. And the Mamiya 7 is not far behind. As your video shows however both take beautiful photographs and you're not likely to go wrong with either.

      Most of the time I push it to 800, it just depends on how dark it is, this was quite late on in the day. But with black and white film I always develop it at the speed that I shoot it.

    I'd definitely appreciate a review/overview of the Mamiya 7. I'm looking to get into medium format and that looks like one of the better options for preserving the portability of 35mm cameras. You should have mounted the 80 mm Mamiya 7 lens, onto the camera,
    then it would've been like testing apples vs. apples !
    The ability to use a 43 mm Mamiya 7 TRUE WIDE Angle lens,
    makes the Mamiya 7 a better buy !
    And by using a #8 filter on the front, it would help you get more tones, especially since you are losing
    gray tones, due to the pushing of the film to 1600 ISO.

    Thanks for the video. I think it would be better if you'd showed more detailed OPERATIONS of both cameras. Is the Makina weird to focus with the focus knob surrounding the release? How about the meters? Is the Makina center-weighted and is that usable in more spot-like metering scenarios? As you can tell... I'm considering buying one. Thanks

    • @danrubin
      @danrubin 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      kb5ql I have two and they're both solid - I'm happier with them being fully mechanical as there are no electronics to break (the light meter is independent from the rest of the camera, so even if it goes you still have a working camera). My sights are set on the wide model next...

    Great work as always guys! I use a Mamiya 7II with the 80mm lens and absolutely love the combo. I have always wanted to give the Plaubel Makina a shot though due to its wider aperture but I imagine hitting focus must be tough at close range at 2.8. How do you deal with the cold temperature affecting the camera? I shot with a Canon AE-1 in college and in cold (Michigan) weather it would always lock up? (something to do with the viscosity of the oil lubricant on the micro mechanical parts, I assume) I could always put it under my coat for a few minutes and get a few more shots out of it, but when I was shooting with models/clients in the cold, the downtime really killed the energy of the shoot.

    I don't know anything about camera's. But I do know a lot about photos! And I've been looking for a camera that gives me the vintage effect. That 90's effect ya know? I would like a camera that's easy to handle because I'm not a photographer, so something easy, and just shoots high quality photos with a very vintage/80's/90's effect! What would you recommend?

      Go to a pawn shop or salvation army and buy a 90's point and shoot for $5. That should do the trick. :)
