The neglect and malfeasance described in this video has persisted throughout our state for decades. It is shocking how tolerant (and complicit) our people have been and continue to be during this steady slide. How is it that the marijuana and abortion constitutional amendments collect the number of signatures necessary to get on the ballot but the Right To Clean Water amendment doesn't?

Infrastructure is breaking down at the same rate tourism is ramping up. Not a good combination.

Really? they just invested hundreds of millions in a Keys wide sewer system. Everyone's water bill skyrocketed. For what? Apparently nothing except make Politicians and their supporters wealthy.

Are live aboard discharges taken into account too? Poop, pee, and gray water! Hundreds of boats! Marinas too.

there's a pump out program in place and strict enforcing. The govt has always pointed their fingers at boaters, we don't shit in our yard

I partially grew up in the Keys during the late 70', and the 80's. Grassy Key has always stunk. We all assumed it was from rotting seaweed, and seagrass, well now we know. We always stayed on Sunshine Key campground ( Ohio Key )... What a childhood I had.

Correlation does not equal causation. How can you know for sure whether it is the wells causing the overgrowth or people dumping from their boats in the harbor? We know that is a significant issue in Boot Key Harbor.

Excellent video/report..very informative. Anyone who has kept a saltwater aquarium with coral and fish can tell you green/brown water equals high nitrates/phosphates/silicates. I was unware sucralose can cause these issues but high nutrients in general and sewage discharges (recipe for algal blooms) are what make the water look green/brown/grey close to the shore.
Btw, I've been finding many fresh dead cowries by the 7Mile bridge for years (I believe the colony (Deer and zebra cowries) is now either extinct at that spot or close to becoming extinct; have not found any empty shells for a year). The gov needs to step in and take over, invest $ to solve this issue. It should not be just up to the state. The sewage infrastructure is antiquated all over the US.

Thank you to the residents for your concerns and coming together to find the why. The confining layers are not what they might have been. The confining layers have been impacted in many different ways. Even the Core bores and the Well drilling cause fractures and fissures. This is a major contributor to Saltwater intrusion problem and the problem with Disposal Wells. You can't drill a hole through anything without fracturing the material. HDD drilling cause fractures and many of the fractures do not come to the surface. These fractures can travel outward and then to the surface or any direction. Native Floridian and former HDD Driller. We must find better ways to deal with Our Waste Materials. I recently learned that there are 80k chemicals in the Biosolids aka Sewage Sludge.

What about the 100's of boats in boot key harbor discharging in the water? What is there, 300 or 400 boats in boot key? Is grey water still allowed to be discharged right overboard?
Why was that guy so stupid as to dive where it stunk of sewage!!!

Time to go back to using Septic tanks or start over with a system that works. Instead of curing the City of Marathon's problem they have created a problem. Obviously, the system does not work.
