- We spend the weekend at Knight's Key Campground, in Marathon Florida. While it was our intention to hike or bike the Seven Mile Bridge, we also enjoy the campground, our inflatable boat, and the local cuisine. By the way the sunsets are also amazing. We are stoked to be here, as we usually are when we travel to the Florida Keys.

Marathon is a relatively large city located in the middle Florida Keys, just before the Seven Mile Bridge. It is composed of several islands, none of which is called Marathon oddly enough. The name probably comes from an expression used by railroad workers during the construction of the Overseas Railway, conveying that the fast pace work felt like running a marathon. That’s what they named the train station, and the rest is history.
We spent a weekend there recently, at Knights Key Campground, at the island just before the Seven Mile Bridge. It is a beautiful tropical paradise. $68 per night in the off-season will buy you a harbor site with your own dock. We wanted to use the inflatable boat so that’s what we got, only to find out it was only convenient to launch it during high tide, which is what we did. One of the best beaches in the Keys, which is not saying much, is nearby. It is called Sombrero Beach, named after its namesake reef, former key, and lighthouse nearby. We spent the weekend enjoying the outdoors, eating the local seafood, and relaxing at the many tiki bars in the area.
It was my intention to bike the old Seven Mile Bridge, but the National Park Service has decided to close it down, in a renovation project that could last years. At least we got to walk on it a few years ago, and to be fair, it was in pretty bad shape. It had already been closed to vehicular traffic, and in recent years it had become a popular spot for biking and jogging.
We are planning to go back in the winter, if we can find a vacancy, in order to enjoy the high season, when the tiki bar by the beach is open and the park is full of snowbirds. It will be interesting to see the seasonal differences.

I've been there many times, in my younger days, with my Dad. Watching your video, brought a slue of memories, pouring back to me...especially seeing the end of the old 7-mile bridge, with the old railroad tracks as banister blockers. Hi Robert, great video. It helped us with the decision to make the drive from Canada to this Campground this March. Really sorry to hear it is closing soon, what a great location. +Lance b The latest I heard is that the property was sold but they really don't know when they will start the construction so it may still be open for a while.
Last I heard was it is taking reservations till July,here's hoping that get extended longer

I grew up going to that campground. Fishing and camping with my family are some of the best memories I have,I am truly heartbroken at the fact that it doesn’t exist anymore.

On Marathon key ..back in 1982., spent christmas on Marathon..... Great little efficiency with bedroom...private..loved staying there!!! Was able to snorkle behind the place in channel .....LOVED THIS PLACE and cant remember the name...........
If I was that close to Key West I would have gone there. I was there 14 years ago for 3 days. Stayed at the Palms Inn and it was really nice for $130.00 a night.
I go to Key west at least once a year. It is my happy place
It is Hot in August. Around Xmas the camp sites are more booked but you don't hear any loud music, the Tiki bar is 100% open, and people are from all over and very, very, very nice...plus the cafe is open too for meals ( next to the fish cutting station).
What is real fun is for $25 take the starfish snorkel tour out to the reef....so worth it!!!

Ha, ha, we went down to Marathon after Irma went through and found ourselves in the middle of the 7 mile bridge with the low fuel light on and not knowing if there would be an open fuel station soon after the bridge. We love these Keys videos Robert. Thank you.

Staying in Key Colony. We rent a house 1-2 times a year there!
I would have politely asked the neighbor to turn down the music. If he takes umbrage, next step is to file a complaint with management. Changing sites lets him get away with inconsiderate behavior.
Too bad people are rude,blast there music...and make you move.And why not buy a nice aluminum canoe.not a big fan of inflatables.i have had bad luck with them..

Hey Traveling Robert. I recently started watching your videos and I love them. Have you ever been to my beautiful state of New Hampshire? I would love to see a video from here. You should come late summer or early fall (great foliage). It's very cold here from late fall to late spring.
Haven't been to NH yet but it is on the list for sure. Maybe next fall
If you do make it up here let me know I can recommend lots of great stuff to see. You can boondock on my property if you need to also.
Hey Buddy, I enjoyed watching this video when you first uploaded it, but just now realized it was from the RV park/campground I was just at a couple of weeks ago. I hate to tell you, but if you want to make a return trip your time is limited. Knight's Key RV/Campground has been sold to developers and after April (I think) will no longer exist. So sad, unless you want to buy a condo I guess. One less resource for the regular guy/gal. Feel bad for the people who have made this their winter home for many years.
+P. W. Yeah, they are closing them down one by one. Point of View in Key Largo is closing down too I hear. It is just going to get more expensive and harder to make reservations

But yes, so sad, been down that way several times since and watched the luxury condos go up. Fewer and fewer places for the RVers and even less for the tent campers like me.

The reason I watched your video is because a TH-camr I subscribe to Premiere1Driver flew his private jet over the area on his way to the island resort just on the other side of Cuba. And on his way back he had to stop in Marathon for customs.

That guy blaring music probably didn't want to get kicked out of the campground, giving a possible reason for him turning the music off.
It is possible, but it looked like he was there pretty long term.

I think I would have had to send something to the guy with the boat and loud music you had a right to peace and quiet.
Robert, I rode my bike on the old bridge to Pigeon Key. No one told me that the pavement was busted up. I rode all the way out there and back, but it was a rough ride. I also drank about two liters of water; there and back. It's really pretty out there, though.
sometimes those bumpers crack at the weld,so always have a peak,you don't want to loose your bicycle going down the 95 at 55,lol
I'll check it out just in case. I'll lose my bike and my spare tire.

Some people are selfish jerks. This is why I hate camping in parks or camogrounds. Unfortunately it's nearly impossible to find spots for wild camping, east of Mississippi river.

Your thumbnail was heartbreaking to me. For those who don’t know, it’s a picture of the Hawks Nest at the foot of the 7 mile bridge. Irma damaged it to the point that the insurance company wouldn’t pay to repair it so it’s shut down. Incompetence led to its demise post hurricane. My family and I had been going there since the mid 70’s for mini season. We loved to go down there and rape all the lobsters away from the locals. At least that’s what we were accused of. I almost had shirts made that said “we aren’t from here”, just because the locals were so proud to say they were.. That being said, lots of good memories there.

is very nice but "beach resort"? Tiny beach but a beautiful resort.

Here in Holland you are forced by Law to have extra mirrors or special mirrors on your car car to tow a caravan, how could yould you drove safe without it??????????????, yes, you could not see the traffic behind you????

Watching you in your inflatable boat was great. I used to have a really nice 21 ft. Sea Ray.. and as nice as that was.. honestly, I think I had more fun in my big rubber raft! More intimate with the water!

+Ana Elisa Starling Best month for the weather is February but it is also the high season, so higher prices and everything is crowded. November and April are still good too but much more quiet. Avoid July and August. Way too hot and humid. Enjoy your Florida vacation and let me know if you have any other questions.
Robert why did you remove the Road Nomad sign ? and are you ever going to upgrade your beautifull Kia ? to maby a bit stronger car? or are u still thinking about going to get a campervan
I am going to put another sign soon. Probably something related to Free in my RV, travelingrobert.com... and good old Kia? I'm keeping her until she dies. It is well broken in, paid off. I can hold off a couple more years...and then either a truck or the camper van. Havent decided yet.

Thank you! Yes, in order to make it work with the RV connection you have to remove the regulator. I was tempted to do it, but instead I just use a 16oz Coleman propane cylinder, maybe not as economic but more convenient for me.

Ah so very nice. Had to watch the bike riding with one eye for awhile but it's so beautiful. I learnt if I spray my shovel with Pam the snow just slides right off. Happy trails guys !!

Love Marathon. We've been going to The Hawks Nest on Knights Key for over 40 years and it never gets old. Watching your film made me sad to know the area was so devastated by Irma. We won't be able to come this year, but hopefully everything will back to normal next year.
We love the area too. Give them a year and they will be back to normal.
Loved the tour headed to key Clooney soon, pass the recipe for the breakfast dish.
I lived on Sombrero Beach road a few houses from the beach. Gary Burghoff of MASH fame lived a few houses from me.
How is it now after hurricane Irma.?
Robert: I was a year long resident of Marathon, but I rented and did not own property. I returned to the Chattanooga area before Irma hit to stay with relatives and have not returned to the Keys as yet. I have not decided to return there to live. They Keys and it's laid back culture is amazing, but when the snow birds return and the Europeans from the cold climates come down in the dry (winter) season, they buy all the bread and milk. LOL
A nice video, nope wouldn't want to be there in August for sure, especially this year, in central Florida it has been boiling hot this year... thanks for posting, will have to go back and get the names of this restaraunts again! W

Enjoyed the video, my husband and I were there last week. First time ever in the keys. We took the ferry boat over to Pigeon Key island, along with eight others, and that was a good decision. Beautiful place, sad that folks can no longer bike over to it.

I was so hoping to see a video of your riding on the old bridge. I love to bike and enjoy watching for videos of rides off the streets, along paved trails, especially ones near here in south Texas. The bridge sounded an ideal place to ride. I hope you bring your bike and try again when the construction is finished. The views will be awesome!

Yes, just not sitting at the actual bar. You will need to sit at a table.
