Ah! Just what i needed & at a good price with auto aerials from ebay at £11.00/$8.00 . I just built a model railway that is at high level & runs through three stud walls into different rooms at my house & i wanted a way to have doors on the stud walls that would auto open when the train is getting close & shut when its gone through. This will solve it as its nice & quick also. Well done for posting.
Mike, Did you ever get the door working/finished? I just completed mine. I did it a little different because I used a semi auto antenna. It operates with one power source and two timers. I'll post the completed door and specs in a few weeks.
I got my dpdt relay in a couple weeks ago. It took forever to get here from china. I'm hoping to have time for it this weekend. Definitely post your specs, that would help a lot!
Mike and Lauren I just posted my competed door on my channel. I just went over the basics in the video. I still want to label everything and clean up the wiring. I'll go into more detail soon. Check it out if you get the chance. my channel is huntermark1160.
Mike and Lauren This is the timer I used. If you have a fully auto antenna, you should look at this guys design. He gives you a step by method to complete the wiring for the door. Since I bought a semi auto antenna, I couldn't use his instructions. Good luck with your project. www.backyardchickens.com/a/automatic-pop-hole-opener Neewer® LCD Digital Power Programmable Timer AC 12V 16A Time Relay Switch
After seeing your video, I searched out the light sensing switch,, and I don't think that switch is going to work. It seems to be an on/off switch, not a reversing switch. I am designing a similar system for my coop, using a power window motor, and I believe you are going to need to add a DPDT relay to your system. Although if you figure it out, I'd love to see it, it might save me some work!
thanks for your video !! ... i would wonder how long that slide would work with chicken scratching dust into it and corrosives and moisture around all the time??
Good video and hope you finished your project, I made mine work with 3 spdt relays and a dusk To dawn relay switch and it works flawless with No issues if you need a diagram on how i made Mine work just ask and I might be able to help!
the only problem with an eye sensor is that I would be afraid that one of those Alberta clippers would blow though at like noon, only it would get as dark as night. Then my girls might get locked out of the coop.
why do gloss over the most important part which is how to set the limits of the antenna motor and how to crop the antenna to fit your coop? THATS THE MOST CONFUSING PART!
Haha. Our chickens are pretty good about getting in their coop right before dusk. And there are plenty of people who have automatic chicken coop doors, so I guess we're just betting on nature working like it should.
interesting points ,if anyone else wants to discover chicken coop building plans download try Wondsting Coop Builder Wiki (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my colleague got excellent success with it.

I am surprised you did not use door switches or limit switches?
Did you cut the antenna length by any chance?
What about a door operated with remote? It would be nice to be able to do that specially when it snows.

huntermark1160 That is awesome! You've inspired me to get mine working tomorrow. What kind of timers did you use? I think my light sensor broke :/

Great idea. FYI chicken's are NOT flightless birds. My sometimes nest 10 feet in the tree.
Mark S Yea, but I've never seen one soar through the air though :)
True, But we are talking about chickens, not
eagles!! I just started my auto door project today. Thanks, again.

illus471 I think that's the problem I had. My light sensor was a SPST switch. I'll definitely be working on it next weekend and posting a video soon!
how much did it cost?
I have seen some folks use Christmas light timers instead of a light sensor. Just set it to power on at 7am and again at 8ish...Good luck!
Greg E If I can't get this sensor to work, that was my plan. I was just hoping not to have to worry about the sunset changing as the seasons go by.

How about a sprinkler timer?
where is part2?
This is awesome
More jump cuts please

I could use your diagram! Technical76@gmail.com
What spdt relays and what d2d photocell did you use?
This is the most convoluted chicken door video I've ever seen. Just get a cheap linear actuator and a timer, why are you making this so complicated?

What if a chicken gets stuck in the door? 0.O My chickens were dumb. It would have happened to me.
Chicken nuggets happen.

+Cody B we've had a similar design running for 2 years, never had a problem with birds getting stuck.
