    This first movement is one of the most incredible things in existence. Mendelssohn is an absolute master. It really is an indignation that he died so young - he was merely 38.

    Why does the screen go completely grey from the 20 minute point?

    I'm sorry, but the cameraman should know who's playing during the performance... it is quite annoying

    Beautiful music beautifully played. Each of the greats ( pick your own top 10 starting with Haydn and ending with Bartok) is great in his own distinctive way.

    Прекрасная, может быть местами чуть излишне сентиментальная музыка. Очень слажкнный квартет. Браво!

      Possibly it's not the performance as such they disliked but this kind of music.

    Sounds absolutely great, phenomenal playing, perhaps best enjoyed without the slightly comic visuals.

    I dont mind facial expressions and in my opininion it can help with the cohesion of the group and help with the unity needed in quartet playing and music making.

    Alban Berg quarttet and Hagen quarttet never did make that kind of faces to make well music...

      Ivan Guerra Maxim Vengerov make strange faces and he is one of the best violinist I've ever heard.

      They play well. It's too bad they rely on these mannerisms to supposedly 'communicate' what the composer was expressing. These facial expressions are a 'Look at me!' in an ensemble that shouldn't be about the individuals but the group, playing as a unit. Very distracting, unnecessary, amateurish, unprofessional, and ultimately unmusical.

    • @1MRBASSMAN
      @1MRBASSMAN 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@iggyreilly2463 On the contrary. Communication between musicians is essential as is feeling and moving to the music. You couldn't be more wrong. And I say this as someone who has been in the classical musical field for over four decades. Everything about this group is utterly professional.

  • @iggyreilly2463
    @iggyreilly2463 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    They have excellent intonation and their ensemble is good. I find the facial expressions and other extraneous physical performing distracting, even comical -- like they're parodying a quartet performance. I wish they wouldn't; I would bet they received some criticism for it from some of the judges and that's unfortunate because it's so unnecessary. The music doesn't need this extra visual input and to think it adds to the performance is kind of insulting to the intelligence of the audience.

    This group looks like someone told them to play more musically, and they instead decided collectively to play with more facial expressions. I don't mind facial expressions. I do mind when they're forced and nonsensical. They play well, yes. But they're lacking the deep understanding necessary to play.../very/ well

    The performance may be good, but what is the theatre? What is happening to all young and younger performers these days, with all the faces they make? Lang Lang's trend seems to have taken a deathly hold. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a musical piece, not a pantomime

      I don't care if musicians are stony faced or if they have expressive faces. It is the music that matters. If the playing is beautiful I don't care if they stand on their heads, whatever works for them.

      As a professional symphony player (Pittsburgh Symphony) and a professional chamber music player, I love and respect their playing and also the physical gestures that are an integral part of what they do.

    Second violinist makes these distracting faces like she's a soloist (see Patricia Kopatchinskaja's memey interpretation of Tzigane); it takes away from the experience of the music, and doesn't provide additive emotional value at all. Beginning of the first movement sounded way too loud and slightly out of tune - just sounded like they wanted to play it differently. Definitely potential in this group, but they need to work on channeling these emotions in a more coordinated way.

    Facial expressions of this group are disgusting, especially those of the second violinist and the cellist. They have little or nothing to do with the music, they are all about winning points with the audience. Cheap effects. At least, the play mostly decently, but inescapably falling into mannerisms, which one expects when observing such mimicry. The third movement sounds inarticulate.

      I hadn't even noticed as I was only listenening to the music without seeing the video. I think how well they play is all that counts.

    • @leeshahinian

      Hmmm, isn't a musical performance about winning points with the audience? For the audience, Goethe wrote, a quartet performance is like "listening to four rational people conversing among themselves." If I am talking with you, I look at you. We tend to underestimate the importance of the visual experience in a classical music performance: www.pnas.org/content/110/36/14580
