The Hungarian word for wolfs is originally a borrowed word from Iranian languages. In proto indo Iranian the word for wolf is Varkas, very similar to Farkas in Hungarian.
"Ordas" also means wolf on Hungarian.
I'm guessing thats where Varg (swedish) comes from aswell(?)
Our archaic word if Ulv though.
I thought it came from the word "farok," meaning "tail," because wolves are tailed creatures

@@lm7338 Actually that's just a funny coincidence. Swedish "varg" came from Proto-Germanic _wargaz_ "outlaw/criminal", supposedly from either Proto-Slavic _vorgъ_ (foe/enemy/outcast) or Proto-Indo-European _werǵʰ-_ (to twist/constrict/strangle).
Meanwhile the Indo-Iranian word is derived from PIE _wĺ̥kʷos_ (also where English "wolf"/"wulf", Latin "lupus", Bulgarian "вълк" _vǎlk_, Lithuanian "vilkas" ultimately derive from).
Swedish used to use a word which came from the same source as the English & Iranian word, "ulv"/"ulf", but the word became taboo and was replaced by various words - mainly "varg", but also "gråben" (gray-leg) and "tasse" (unknown etymology, likely an original dialectal innovation)

In ancient Turkish wolf is also called "Böri" or "Börü". Dates as early as 700's after christ (edited because i confused 700bc with 700ad)

all of these words except Turkish come from PIE wĺ̥ḱwos. Romance languages (As well as the Nordic languages excluding Swedish, but they lost it much later on) lost the w. Slavic languages (As well as German, Swedish, and the Baltic languages) turned the w into a v, a very common sound change.
Finnish, Estonian, and Hungarian are all Uralic languages, not Proto-Indo-European. Estonian 'hunt' likely came from Middle Low German 'hunt' or Proto-Germanic "hundaz", but that would make it descended from PIE ḱwn̥tós, not wĺ̥kʷos. Also, its wĺ̥kʷos not wĺ̥ḱwos. If the k was palatal rather than labaialized, it would have be 'wolk' not 'wolf.'
In Chechen is “Borz” it is also European language

In Romanian we call foxes Vulpe, which is cognates with wolf and most others. It comes from Latin Vulpes.
I wonder if lupus is also cognates with vulpes.

In Finnish "otso" is one of poetic names for a bear, but the most official name for bear is "karhu". The other Finnish nicknames for bear are "mesikämmen" (literally nectar palm) and "kontio". In ancient times bear was seen as the king of the forest (metsän kuningas), the most respected and feared animal in the north.
@@lucone2937 So interesting! In basque bear is "hartz". When we hear speaking finnish we feel something "familiar", the language sounds like if you were hearing a relative 🙂
In Estonian, formal and standardized dictionary definition aside, "hunt" really doesn't distinguish the wolf from a dog (the word is etymological relative of "hound”), whereas "susi" is only ever used in precise meaning of the wolf (whereas "peni" is for dog, distinctly from the wolf).
I took notice from Swedish, Hungarian. In Estonian, there's "varas / vargad" (thief / thieves) originating from Germanic "vargaz" (apparently historically came over in the meaning of "the hen-tief" for a fox or something like that)...

In English instead "hound" is related with 'hund'/'hundr'/'hunt'
Meanwhile "wolf" as well have Germanic roots (eg: Old Saxon 'wulf'; Old Norse 'ulfr')

The word in Luxembourgish sounded more Dutch than the Dutch one hahaha
