Went out with an instructor on vacation to try learn how to sail the Hobie. Soooooo much to learn. What you are doing here blows my mind. Flying on the water.
It's fantastic to watch your terrific videos combined with my learning curve and newbie owner H14 experiences. I'm always watching the details of your rigging and rudders for additional information to progressively improve my sailing. Well done Joe!
Bought a 1976 14 Turbo on Thursday. Never sailed a Hobie before although I have been sailing an 18 ft classic shoal keel for about 20 years. That boats top speed is about 5 knot to 7 knots regardless of the wind, and it doesn't capsize! However these videos probably saved me from taking a drink in the lake for my new old Hobie. I flopped around at dusk with minimal wind for about 2 hours each on two successive days (Fri/Sat) just to get a feel for how the Hobie handled. Today is Sunday and I took it out in the actual wind for the first time. 8-12 knots and I got her to almost take air once but Ill bet that probably doesn't fully happen until your in about 15 or more knots? . I was trying to just see how quickly it would pick up speed and I found out! Being out on the trapeze was a bit unnatural at first but once I was out there it was truly amazing to see just how much more controllable the boat is from that perspective and how well you can see everything that's going on around the boat! I agree with many about such a light and short boat having difficulties tacking ... but I managed just about every time to make it work. I did lose footing once and skimmed the water and drifted forward but was able to hang onto the tiller and recover without losing too much speed. Your video helped me from diving in. I made sure that no matter what happened today I was totally keeping both bows up and above the waterline! Kudos for showing all of that in your videos I am working on finding the best location for the traveler in heavy wind (that's about 15 here in New York), and positioning it at about 1/3 from center was good for today but it appears you folks tend to take it out to about half. Probably because of the wind you have? Interesting boat with the Jib, why didn't you folks install a jib on your 14? Possibly that you don't need the additional speed in your neck of the woods!!! wow awesome winds! But much much more than I think I would ever manage!
It sound like you're well on the path to Hobie enlightenment! Great stuff. We don't fit the jib here because in the high winds it's really not necessary (although it does help greatly with the tacking) And the 14 is traditionally raced without a jib. And we haven't got one.
Habe auch schon Hobies gesegelt. Sehr, sehr geil! Aber das Beste war immer mein alter Kumpel mit deinem alten 420er. Der rief mich immer an, wenn eine Sturmfront im Anmarsch war. Und dann sind wir da raus und haben alles gegeben. Und es war geil!
Hi Joe Any tips on how to keep the sheet out of the cleat (i.e., when you want to be able to dump power quickly)? Finesse? Mine likes to cleat...tricky to keep it out... Thanks!
They may be small but the Hobie 14 is still plenty fast... and heavy. At 240 pounds, they were not easy to pull across beach sand, especially if you had water in the hulls. I had a white one the same as this but the forty year old version which had the bottom of the sail running through a channel in the boom. I got a matching white jib on mine because I wanted more power and speed and I thought that it looked cool however, I probably would have been better of getting a trapeze on reflection. I never ended up buying one, why is beyond me as I would have got more speed and fun out of it. One big problem that I had with sailing it on the Swan River in Western Australia is that almost everywhere, the water was only two feet deep or so meaning that most of the time, the rudder blades kept getting knocked up. As you can imagine, especially when you were tacking into strong winds, that made steering quite the physical challenge. To say I ended up with forearms like popeye, wouldn't be much of an exaggeration. However, I didn't have much chouce, it was either that or the ocean and there's nothing else sailing of the ocean so that would have been hell boring. I toyd with the idea of getting a Hobie 16, it eoukd have sat higher and ride more smoothly not to mention be a few knots faster but handling and sailing it single handedly would have been out of the question. If there was a boat ramp at the south Perth foreshore where I used to sail at and I had the right sort of trailer then maybe but it was hard enough to handle the 14 footer, especially when you were tired at the end of the day. Sometimes, I would finish the day wondering if my tiredness would be more than my enthusiasm but I would get up the next day and look at my boat and I would literally not be able to wait to get out there again. Sometimes, I would go out with a few friends and a second boat, a Hawke 14 which is a totally different boat well suited for the river as it had paddle rudders, was narrower, was lighter at 160 pounds and had flat bottomed hulls as opposed to the Hobie dagger ones. My favourite time of the day was when we actually finished and we'd a ll ways by a heap of KFC, I used to get some looks when I'd go through the drive through and get the staff yo put it in the trailer behind me and we'd go home and light up the fire to warm up a bit on the cool autumn or fall days as they say in America and I'd crank up my Phase Linear/Bose hifi system and we'd listen to Fleedwood Mac's Rumours, Neil Diamond's Hot August Night and Dire Straight's Alchemy. Good weekends and the best days of my life and for some reason, the Coke and the KFC seem to taste better and none if us were worried about getting fat.

Je vais réessayer. Faut apprendre.
Ouch.
The wetsuit provides good protection when there are going to be some big crashes!
Are you sail instructor or just a sailer ?
I am just a sailor and a sailing instructor!

Muito bom 😃😃
Thanks!
wonderful cat , probably , the best boat of twenty century, thank you , mister Alter for all pleasure which you get for us....
one question ; what is the real speed in this video? j remember high speed when j sailed in Almanarre between funboard during the GRAND PRIX DE L ALMANARRE with a strong wind called MISTRAL!!!
I Just watched the video to see if i said the speed - 21.24 knots, I think that's pretty quick for a 14. Great boat, so much fun. It kind of crosses the divide between boat sailing and windsurfing.
this is not sailing, its flying... that is quick....
It certainly felt good at the time!
