Brigador is one of the all time great cult hidden gems. MASS builder's customization and gunpla style mecha design is unmatched, even by the big name GD games.
Yup, I spent multiple hours just on customization on the game rather than playing it. The only downside of the game is you actually need to grind a lot before you could play around with the customization.
MASS builder's combat is definitely somewhat lacking and needs more weapon customization. But the building is easily top tier and makes the game worth it just for that. And the combat isn't terrible or anything.
MASS Builder was a major let down in terms of an actual game. It has a decent and very indepth design feature for the appearance of your mech, but that's it. Being limited in terms of weapons and mobility options holds it back a lot.
@@MartyrPandaGaming Fair, but I think it's partly just that their focus is the builder and so it came first. Throughout early access so far the builder has received minor additions but combat has improved somewhat significantly. Combat still needs work, but the difference is clear.
Can I add an upcoming indie mech title to this list? If you're a fan of the tactical, turn-based Front Mission games, check out Kreigsfront Tactics. It comes out next month!
Yo. Kriegsfront Tactical definitely is something to lookout for. And just finding out about Ignited Steel and I just bought it because it’s on sale right now.
Mecha Knight struck me as Armored Core at home, but you're right, the swarm of enemies is definitely more EDF. I hope we get a second game with new weapon types, since apparently some things were not possible in the current game (melee weapons I think? I remember people mentioning it in the steam forums). I really like the Little Tail Bronx serie, the first game, Tail Concerto, being the debut of both the studio and Kokia was truly something. And talking of PS classics, who can forget Omega Boost and Ghost in the Shell? I regularly think back to those three, there hasn't really been many games like them since. And the Metal Slug games probably deserve a mention as far as mech games go!
@@steevankeitaro8224 Yeah, and the dev mentioned that how they coded the first game precluded easy modding and thus they're likely to be mindful of that for the sequel. Really cool to see that game mentioned.
@@scoobsshrooms109 While true, you have most of the game optioning or requiring a fighter or bomber craft of some type, even the Strike Suit defaults to a fighter configuration when not active. So while the mech component is there, and always a blast to use, it's largely built around a fighter/bomber centric space sim (and the arcade-leaning nature of the game strains on that term). A good alternate example would be the Battle Assault games for Gundam. Is it a mech game, or is it a fighting game that features mechs? Just calling a spade a spade is all. Titles like Gundam Battle Operation (2) or Armored Core as you mentioned fit much better into the full on mech genre.
Mech Engineer - Would be right into my top picks of indie games for 2024, as you say "nothing quite like it on the market" where Mech Engineering takes the front (pilot) seat and the action all follows those strategic decisions preceding. This looks so awesome like a dream mech game from scientific first principles and technical dilemmas with perfect presentation! Just another title that demonstrates what makes indie games so worthwhile. Panzer Paladin - May be more platformer with pixel mech looks but that look is awesome nonetheless. Brigador: Up Armored Edition - Goes for that Mecha Epic scale that this genre deserves with giant robots rivalling buildings and smashing building and cities with awesome weapons and collisions. Planetary Annihilation - Lives up to it's title with Titan-Mechs that can destroy the globular planets in real-time! Fairly awesome game with loads of options. Into The Breach - One of the best indie games (along with their other game FTL) simple but elegant and captures the anime spirit almost perfectly too in a sort of digital boardgame format.
Thank you Clemmy for finally doing a Top 20 for the mecha genre. Panzer Paladin is definitely overlooked and underrated. The same goes for Wolfstride. And while Into the Breach is superior tactics game, Brigador is one of my top games of all time. It's the game I always come back to. I can't wait for the sequel.
What's amazing about riftbreaker is that the devs didn't have any intention of making it a co-op experience. However, with how much it has been requested by their community, they have been working tirelessly to implement a feature that was originally never considered! They're having to make it entirely from scratch as the in-house engine they designed the game on never had any sort of online functionality, but as of typing this, co-op is now in a beta phase! It's uncertain how many people you can play with maximum as I'm certain they had a stream with 6 or 8 people playing it at once (before co-op entered a beta phase), though I'll be happy to be able to play with 1 other friend in general!
Mechwarrior 5 had issues on launch, but right now it is an amazing sandbox-y mech game. You may think "oh, that is too simulation-y" but it is very accessible, I comfortably play it with less buttons that I play a shooter. (self published, so it is an indie)
Bionic Dues is a fantastic little roguelite mech game from about 10 years ago. There are a lot of cool weapons and the combat is really fun. Only about $2.50 USD until the current 2024 Steam Sale ends. Cryptark is an awesome 2D shooter kind of like GalakZ. More roguelite and lighter on the scripted story bits. Mechs V Kaijus is a really fun little pixel art tower defense game where you set up your defenses and customize a variety of mechs to defend against incoming waves. It's more fun than it sounds! Battle Grid is a spin on the Vampire Survivor "genre" where you build up a squad of mechs and arrange them in formations on a grid, and move them as one unit while surviving waves of enemies. Lots of cool interplay between different weapons and abilities from various mech combos. Stardust Galaxy Warriors is a fun side-scrolling flying mech shoot 'em up that's great fun in co-op with friends. Lastly I just want to put in the good word for Mech Engineer, it's a seriously dope but underrated game. The interface looks obtuse, and figuring out how things work is a tougher than in other games, but it's well worth it because it's really a phenomenal game with a lot of depth and huge customization. Definitely worth a look if you love fine tuning your mechs to extract the most performance out of them and creating a unique team that compliments each other well on the battlefield. I give it a 9.5/10!
Astebreed is a total blast! Definitely plays mostly like a shmup but the vertical to horizontal and even full on third-person variety along with its melee mechanics puts this in a WAY above average game category for me.
Then I assume you know about Megaton Musashi wired already. Stumbled onto that and it's been some real fun, even if the action combat is taking a while to open up the depth of the system.
Clem, I assume you're too busy with work, family and YT to watch any television, but I was pleasantly surprised by _Synduality:Noir._ It didn't review super well, but I quite liked it. Bandai is making _SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada_ a PvPvE extraction shooter game set in-universe but as I understand it, it won't have any of the characters from the show. None of this is indie of course, but given your intro, I thought I'd share.
I rock the hell out of Mecha Knights. It plays like the anime Blue Gender but the garage play and the Creator is mad cool and is down to talk sometimes. Im happy I bought it, sure its not a AAA title but its better than the category it falls into
