- The 'mecha' sub-genre of anime has been one of the most popular in the industry since the medium began. Like a lot of other anime settings and tropes, many JRPGs over the years have incorporated elements inspired from it. This video aims to highlight some of these quality titles with '8 Great Mecha JRPGs You Need to Play.' With that said there are actually much more than just 8 games featured here as some of the series we discuss a few of the titles within it. Probably closer to 15-20 games or so are mentioned here in some sort of detail. Hope you all enjoy!

Xenogears was a masterpiece. That legend of dragoon, legend of legaia, Final Fantasy tactics and FF9 are my fav PS games of all time.

SRW needs SO much more recognition, that series is criminally underrated
I feel this is no longer the case. Many people are familiar with the series now. Hell, the English version of Super Robot Wars 30 even landed on Steam.
Idk if having well over 50 releases counts as "underrated". And while i love it, the gameplay is insanely easy so idk if I'd ever recommend it to non mecha fans.

It IS underrated. Problem with that series is cause of Licensing issues OUTSIDE of Japan so we never really got any English translated ones only until recently. Too bad we never got the BEST SRW that is SRW Z2 from the PSP in English. Those animations are the best in the series.
I found this video randomly. Seeing more and more love for Xenogears on youtube and I couldn't be happier. Continue spreading the word. That game is special and deserves more than becoming dead media.
13 sentinels aegis rim is an honorable mention for me. Technically its a visual novel, but it has some elements of mecha jrpg. And the story and characters are amazing!
Xenogears, Front Mission and Super Robot Taisen always the first things that pops up in my mind when hearing Mech RPG...

Ahh, Xenogears. My favorite JRPG of all time, followed by Legend of Legaia and Legend of Dragoon.
I really wish there were more Front Mission games, 3 and 4 are my favorite. It's a shame the West doesn't get any more. Nowadays, I get my mecha tactics fix with BattleTech on PC.
You nailed it with Xenogears.....EPIC....such great storytelling....suspenseful....building up tension and intrigue. My top RPG by far for these reasons.
Xenogears is my favorite JRPG ever. Playing that game as a kid made me so hyped and happy in a way that other JRPGs didnt do. You got everything in that game amazing anime cutscenes, great character design, a story thats good enough to in an anime, beautiful sound track, unique battle system and you control both your pilot and your mech.
Glad I searched mecha JRPG on youtube and found this channel. Really good quality content I'm surprised this hasn't blow up yet

Xenogears was the most difficult rpg I finished in the 90s, and it was worth the sewer level to get the whole story.
Oh yeah. It is worth revisiting even 20 yrs later.

it was way ahead of its time. Too bad disc 2 was unfinished due to budget constraints. Would be nice to have a remake but that's basically impossible now since squaresoft no longer exists.

if you can find a copy, you definitively should. The story wasn't well translated, but the gameplay and overall story were pretty good. but as he stated, everything was somewhat slow-paced. If you go the emulator route, probably using an accelerator feature can help.

Ring of Red; as noted is a nuanced game and I hate to admit that one of those titles that is roughest in the opening chapters. If you aren't immediately turned away the game continues to open up in complexity and depth and battles get more rewarding as the story progresses. It has a wonderful buildup of complexity & difficulty so you don't ever just hit a point of being too OP or intrinsically understanding game mechanics that results in trivialized fights; things stay really fresh throughout the whole campaign.
During Battle each engagement has a limited timer that you and enemy share simultaneous. Skills are readied by the cockpit crew akin to a tank crew where you are the commander of the tank-like AFW (Armored Fighting Walker). As shells are loading you maneuver on the field & have a risk-reward choice of when loaded & you sight in on a unit, your hit percentage raises over time. Do you fire early at 72% because you know the enemy is also aiming down site on your but risk missing. Do you wait for a sure hit? Did you wait to long and as you were hoping for an accurate shot the enemy fired first and hit you knocking your aim from 74% back to 50% and you need to line the shot back up.
There are multiple unit types from Close Combat, Scouting Anti-Infantry Types, All Purpose & Bombardment Focused. All suits have optimal ranges and during engagements your fights can progress from CC, Short, Medium, Long range. When you initiate a fight on the grid map from an adjacent square you'll start at Medium range during daytime, potentially short range during nighttime. You can engage units from a diagonally adjacent square to begin combat at Long/Medium range for some unit types. Daytime has the fastest aim percentage increases & higher starting threshold/night time reduces both as does adverse weather. Some attacks are range dependent such as melee which also ends a fight early or continuously having your unit fall backwards beyond long range can see a unit 'escape' combat range ending an encounter.
AFW's also have a general HP bar and part HP bars with damage to subsystems crippling performance categories. Is their a heavy duty melee commander on the field? Then perhaps your pilots which can target specific parts attempts to cripple the units legs so they can never close the distance during a fight if you fall backwards denying them their best attack. Or approach walking fortress type enemies with super lightweight Scout AFW's and bullrush close combat range to limit the enemy usage of certain ammo types and special abilities.
You eventually need to manage special ammo types and squads of soldiers that accompany the AFW's. Two such squads will be composed at the player discretion to accompany a single AFW from a pool of General Infantry, Mechanic Squads, Heavy Weapons Units, Recon Units, Medical Squads to fight on foot & one unit as the 'crew' of the machine itself. A squad class also provides some passive stat boosts to the vehicle it accompanies & more so for the AFW crew; plus these units can help with damage abilities, range advantages, & most importantly infantry special skills that can do a litany of things such as launch smoke attacks to cover retreat/advances in battle, popping flares at night to improve your aiming, lay down minefields to deter enemy frontal rushes, ect. Attacks of infantry and your AFW can also be infantry targeting or AFW targeting as unit composition becomes super critical later on to strategies used. For a RNG factor Infantry Units have a pool of skills per Class type that they can roll with so you could take in Two General Infantry units who target enemy infantry primarily, with one unit having an anti-infantry grenade toss at CC/Close range and the other unit with an anti-infantry rifle barrage in Close/Medium/Long ranges. Or you could use a Heavy Weapons squad with anti-tank barrage skill & a Medic Unit with infantry healing skill to keep those troops healthy. I found I constantly favored wiping out accompanying enemy troops from strong units before trying to destroy the machine itself as the unpredictability of how the ground troops could turn fights was of concern. The two ground infantry squads during the timed sequence can be commanded to advance before the AFW or follow behind it with some skills being position & range dependent, AFWs can be ordered to move up, fall back or stand neutral.
Repairing on the battlefield can be performed in lieu of a combat action, but not all types of damage could be fixed this way. AFW's lost in combat were only pulled back from the front & eligible to return as soon as the next battle. Pilots are immortal and intrinsically tied to one specific unit they command. Infantry units have perma-death; a ground squad killed from enemy fire is lost forever; a destroyed AFW has its infantry crew slaughtered but the ground troops retreat. It was actually melancholy to win an entire map but loose well developed infantry with awesome skills making some narrow victories bittersweet as the troop slot could be most likely filled but with a different niche sub-type that could alter how your command that AFW squadron going forward to some degree.
Super long winded, but if the game can hook you it is a good time & Very unique.
I definitely think Super Robot Wars could've been covered better. Describing the differences between the Original Generation games and the more mainline games, some of the anime series included that people would be more familiar with (Gundam, Evangelion, Macross, etc), showcasing the different games chronologically etc.
I was a big fan of MS Saga : A new dawn. It's an SD style tactical RPG with a lot of customization on mecha. It's not set in any particular gundam universe but the suits components all come from various gundam series. You can mix and match and create some fairly fun looking mecha. Pretty underrated PS2 RPG.
i would LOVE a new gundam game in this style, instead of the copy and paste they have been doing
from software should make mini game armoredcore with ms saga rpg style ... that would be awesome lol

I am pretty sure it is a traditional turn based JRPG and not a "tactical" RPG, though...
Holy crap I've been trying to remember what Ring of Red and Front Mission were for so many years! I had the visuals in my head but could not for the life of me find what the the hell the games were until now 😭... thank you so much. Keep up the magic!
I freaking LOVED RIng of Red. Really intense, but thoughtful, combat. Dieselpunk-ish mechs. Would love a Switch or PC remaster.
I loved the inclusion of Super Robot Wars, although I do have a few comments in the way it was shown.
First is a minor one, that you started by showing Masou Kishin (Which is an OG game with no licensed stuff) yet didn't talk about it.
And second, glossing over the games with fantranslations. There are a few fantranslated SRW games that some prefer over the new ones!
Ms Saga for ps2 was not received well but I love it. You pilot mechs into turn based battles. It’s 100 dollars or more nowadays but I have two copies that I bought cheap when the ps2 was being phased out.
MS Saga is one of my all time favorite games. There are games with much higher quality and production value out there, but for some reason it was so much fun regardless. I fondly keep remembering the game and replay it every now and then.

Mecha is probably my favourite anime genre. I have spent way too much money on premium Macross figures over the years.
I do find it a little unfortunate that there are so few turn-based mecha games since I'm not too into tactical rpgs.
Not really actually, most of them are japan exclusive and there are plenty of them in English too. They just died out of obscurity. You can still play them besides this list does not list majority of them
Steambot chronicles was my top fav rpg on the ps2 alongside the artonelico series, such a shame that Irem had to shutdown its games division and cancel the sequel due to the tohoku earthquake...I really hope Granzella, which is mostly staffed by people from the original teams at Irem, would one day be able to acquire the rights to the series or develop a spiritual successor

SRW Original generations series is a crossover of all the some of the earlier SRW protags in one original setting.
Rio, Ryoto, Leone, tasuki, kusuha, bullet, carla and Yuuki came from alpha 1, although Carla and yuuki got introduced in OG2 while the rest are in OG1.
Masaki, Lune and shu are from Masou kishin. some of the supporting characters appeared in 2nd OG.
Kyosuke, excellen and alfimi are from Impact/compact 2.
and there's many more got included like from earlier titles like MX, A, D, J, etc.
@Pro Token420 Are you playing the gba or the ps2 one? The ps2 one got translated in 2021 and it's just overall better than the gba games and they have more content.

just pointing out that Front Mission 4 was not the last entry we got in the west; we also got Front Mission Evolved in 2010
Evolved was underrated, I especially loved online in that game.

I commend this list, many of these games I myself have played. Some I WILL be checking out so thanks for that. But what really hit home for me personally is of course. Xenogears!!! It is criminally underrated and feel like it gives players a deep dive into, not just Giant Robots but also the kinds of stories that Mech Anime have. Are all brought to life in Xenogears. Being a Mecha fan myself. When the game came out on PS1. I was simply blown away but I wanted to share this with my friend. Quite a few of whom didn't share my love for giant robots. Have to say even to this day. That game is the one my friends bring up when talking to their other friends about "How they got into Mecha".
I don't think Xenogears is underrated though, it's always in top ten PS1 game almost everywhere I see

Even though Xenogears is one of my favorites I do have to be real when recommending the game to people playing it for the first time; some parts could be considered a little archaic nowadays and may not hold up super well. I think the game is a masterpiece but I can see how it wouldn’t be for everyone, especially playing it for the first time in 2021 or later. With that said I really do hope you enjoy it when you finally get around to it!

I know MS Saga is basically a goofy gundam Rpg Game, but the fact that You can build your own MS and synergize your party with the skills and parts make it worth a shot.. i surely enjoyed it. and it kills me that no one seems to remember it.. it was basically "RPG gundam breaker"

Another I didn’t see but enjoyed on ps1 was “space griffin VF-9”. Fairly basic controls but piloting a transforming mech the whole time with space/survival horror aspect. Super intense for my unexpecting little brain😂

Funny you ended the video with a shout-out (kind of) to the Gundam Wing anime series, SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays is worth a mention on this list. Like Super Robot Wars, an asian release that has English-text localization. I am not a hard-core Mech fan, but enjoyed the game-play on both. Enjoyed your video.

@@GamingBroductions both the sd Gundam generation and super robot wars have been getting English versions lately. We have at least 4 srw in English now (V, T, X and 30th aniversary), meanwhile, the last 2 sd Gundams that I'm aware of also got theirs. One covers the universal century plotline (Char and Co.) the other covers the spinoffs like seed and wing. So there is an improvement on that end. :D
I think they are all available on switch (got 4 of the games on it) and 2 on pc-steam (the 30th anniversary and the sd Gundam for spin-off titles)

Starting strong with Front Mission, but then you really hit me with some pleasant surprises like Ring of Red and Vanguard Bandits. I feel like I'm one of maybe eight people who played those games. Great to see they haven't been forgotten.
Zoids had a couple neat games. The GBA turn based rpg and the arena map combat one on gamecube are the only two I remember enjoying though.

Great list, would like to recommend MS Saga: A New Dawn to anyone who enjoyed this list as well. It's another Mecha JRPG and one of my favorites. Set in a Gundam universe, mix and match parts from dozens of Mobile Suits to make your 3 man team and finish a decent (for JRPGs) story along with some challenge modes. Yes you can make the Wing suits, as well as G Gundam. Gonna go try out Steambot Chronicles now.
I wish the mobile suits weren't in the SD style, but MS Saga was a fun time.

There was a Gundam Seed based PS2 tactical turn based RPG game released only in Japan that I loved because it was one of the few games that wasn't SD.
It's mostly playable even without being able to read Japanese - though it is a bummer that it never was released in the west.
Xenogears also my favorite game of all time. Trails of Cold Steel also great, although the first one kinda boring and contain less mecha part. But Cold Steel 2-4 have a lot of mecha

oh wow, I came here hoping for vanguard bandits and front mission to make the list (glad to see they actually did), but I was not expecting Ring of Red.
I quite enjoyed that game, the localization could use some rework (unless the original Japanese writing was at fault) but otherwise, it was a very enjoyable game with deep mechanics.
Of course, no mecha game list should go without the Super Robot War series... that kind of a given.
Didn't know that there was a ZoE 3 though... learn new things every day uh.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation Vs. Zeon was a good Mech game.
IAS doesn't just make Fist of Mars too easy; it makes it a cake walk. All you have to do is spin your reticle in a circle around the screen and you can reliably avoid damage forever.
Vanguard Bandits was an amazing game and BY far my favorite Mecha tactics game ever. Simply incredible. Extremely sad it never got any more games out of it
Wow can’t believe someone mentioned Ring of Red. I absolutely loved this game as a kid being one of the few early PS2 games. The battles do get ridiculously long but you can quick save and come back to it later. It’s a bunch of fun and quite a bit of complexity to the combat that is slowly introduced. Highly recommend it. Also if your PS2 develops the issues of not reading dvds but cds just fine then this should run because it is on cd.
Xenogears is my favorite thing ever. Such a grand epic sci-fi saga in the very same veins as Mobile Suit Gundam, Armored Trooper VOTOMS, Five Star Stories, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Dune, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Childhood's End, and The Expanse.
And to think, Takahashi's wife was the one that came up with such a grand plot, that lady has a real active imagination
Xenogears is my all time favourite Tactical JRPG, then FF Tactics and Front Mission 3.
If you ever have the time, you should take a look at Cyber Knight I & II on the SNES. Very interesting mix of traditional turn-based RPG with overhead exploration and random encounters and SRPG type battles where you have to position your mechs and alter your equipment to win. They made a lot of innovations ahead of its time such as doing away with currency and having anti-grinding measure. Plus, you get to fly around the galaxy in a space ship!
Well said, I'm surprise anyone even knows about Cyber Knight and it's sequel, it was made by a rather obscure company and never released outside of Japan, although Aeon Genesis did translate both titles
@@jackylee5850 Yup, Tonkinhouse who never did much else of note, sadly. I only know about it thanks to Aeon Genesis, yes. But I was very thankful to learn because they are excellent games. I hope the original for the PC Engine gets translated some day as well.
I doubt that'll happen, PC Engine isn't exactly accessible to non-Japanese, plus Aeon Genesis isn't likely to spend the effort on such an old game, since they've already done the snes translation, which is mostly identical save for graphic and animation differences. Not to mention their snes translation was done in 2001, while the PC Engine game was released in 1990, no one in their right mind would work on a game 33 years old, and a niche one at that
@@jackylee5850 Somebody else was working on it for a while, but he keeps coming in and out of the project with years long breaks in between, so I don't think he's ever going to actually finish. Even if the two version are identical in structure, the PC Engine version has superior art and animation which is why I would like to get the chance to play it all the way through. We've had some PC Engine and PC Engine CD translations in the last few years, so I'm holding out hope for someone to do it along with all of Tengai Makyou.
A cool new one is Fuga Melodies of Steel, more tank but a lot of fun. Love mecha!

Only in Japanese, but Gyrozetters is amazing! Its by Level-5, real world branded cars (probably why not released worldwide) that transform into mech you control. You capture them like pokemon. Its such a great game but being Japan exclusive completely unknown. If you study Japanese for a couple years though should be playable, pretty simple language used like with Pokemon or Yokai Watch games.

Got a copy of vanguard bandits from a thrift shop a while back. Was pretty fun.
my favorite mecha games back in the ps1 were brave saga and geppy x, also gundam battle assault. I still can't believe that I managed to beat the former as a kid despite the game not having an english translation. as for the ps2, it has to be steambot chronicles. randomly getting excalibur in that game without looking at any guides at the time was a very splendid surprise. I didn't even know super robot wars series existed until maybe the late 2000's and I was quickly hooked to it because it quickly reminded me of the aforementioned brave saga and it also has a lot of my favorite mechs across its many titles.
edit: also the megaman games ofc if I they count. my favorites were the battle network series, legends and the x series.

If you haven't given it a look, White Knight Chronicles would be a rather overlooked series to check out for interesting mecha in a jrpg
No they are not mechs. I doubt you even know what a mech is. White knight chronicles is just people transforming into knights like power rangers and super sentai nothing else

Not a must play title, but I think white knight chronicles is a pretty fun arpg that’s worth looking into.

@@dotmbarricade3424 I don’t know how you come to the conclusion that White Knight is like power rangers(or sentai in this case) in any capacity, but I think they still count as mecha. They’re just fantasy/armored based Think escaflowne or more accurately rayearth, since the later is based in magic.
@@MD_Chaos no they dont. You literally see the humans morph into a knight armour. They are not mecha never will be. People like you call halo a mech game because a basic guy who just wears power armour. You cant even differentiate between power Armor, exo suit and knight armour. In In Escaflowne you literally see humans piloting those gaint machines. Mecha= bipedal machines but there are some exceptions like mechs using tank legs and other stuff. But white knight chronicles is not in any means a mecha

Glad to see Ring of Red get a shout out. It's one of my favorite games though I don't know that I can really recommend that people play it in 2024.

I actually love Mecha anime, started with Gundam Wing and have seen a few, not a lot but really enjoy them, was looking for games like these, never knew about any of them

My favorite mecha anime is Macross. Even though I haven't really kept up with the series over the years.
I just happened on this video. A set of games that I played never released in America are Cyber Knight and Cyber Knight II, heavy in sci-fi and space exploration elements as well as battle mechanics involving mecha as well as out of the Mecha.
Front Mission 5 is great. Glad to learn about Endless Frontier. Nice to see another non-tactics game in the genre.
If you guys dig or have any interest in Front Mission, I URGE YOU to watch Armored Trooper Votoms. FM was directly inspired by it, specially by the 2nd arc of that anime. Votoms is outright one of THE BEST and most influential real robot animes ever made, full stop.
Also, for some reason I prefer the fantranslation of Front Mission on the Snes because the DS version is a bit compromised in terms of how it looks and sounds. However it does have a 2nd scenario not present in the original. Nobody ever translated the PS1 version of which the DS is based on that has both scenarios and an rearranged soundtrack.
Please also track Front Mission 2 and 5 by the FMTP (Front Mission Translation Project) that got complete fan translations, essentially making the complete mainline series accessible for english-speakers. They were working on translating Front Mission Alternative when they discontinued the project since the main goal was to translate the Mainline titles.
Played Front Mission 3 a lot as a teenager, as well as Front Mission 4. Haven't finished 2 and 5 yet though.
Well 2 remake will give you that chance!!
It is so wild seeing someone else acknowledge Steambot Chronicles. I really wish Irem could have finished the second one before they went back to Pachinko... That has been my favorite Mecha just from how weird and charming it is, even if it doesn't control smoothly. It feels like trying to hustle around a vehicle from the industrial revolution and that I suppose is just fine considering the setting. An acceptable level of clunk

Ring of Red is REALLY good! I usually don't love Japanese mechs because they're often just very human-like in their capabilities rather than being big bulky machines (like in, say, BattleTech), but ROR is the rare Japanese game that treats them more like super powerful but bulky tanks. I love that.
I miss Xenosaga ; - ; . I would like Xenogears and 'saga to be rereleased!

FM 3 and 4, RoR and Xenosaga were my jam. another one i'd recommend would be MS Saga for those who were fans of the Gundam Series.
ZOE 1 is a bit like a lite-ARPG, it even has a world map based on gundam colony setting.

Among the games you mention I haven't played one, that is ring of red. I have played the rest and everything is really great reccomendation. Steambot Chronicle, Xenogears and saga was some of my favorite games. Vanguard was kinda meh, in term of story and mecha design. FM is superb military story x mecha action with branching storyline. Steambot is like GTA-lite, so much thing to do you forgot to do the main story. Xeno is just masterpiece, great story, great mecha, great music.
A.C.E or Another Century Episode series is the action fighting version of super robot wars that we never got in the west. I played the A.C.E R for the ps3 and man was it a fun game.
Fun Fact: in Gundam, Mobile Suits were conceived as power armor, not giant robots. The creators wanted a super realistic war anime but the sponsors wanted to market their toys as giant robots.
Imagine Amuro and Char battling in power armor instead of sitting in chairs pulling levers.
Xenogears!!! What a game! The Xenosaga series was pretty good as well and the Front Mission games were awesome. You can play all of these via PC Emulators with improved graphics.

My friend brought front mission back from Japan in 96. We had to shave off some plastic to make it fit in the American console. Played the entire thing in Japanese.
