malufenix and ***** , this was AWESOME. Think you guys should hit up Bethesda and do another collab for them to stick in the next Elder Scrolls game ;)
I accidentally pressed the C key at the same time as the space bar (to unpause the video), which activated the closed captions and made TH-cam try to find English words that match the Swahili lyrics. I strongly recommend it.
@Jason Leon Didn't expect to get a reply to a 5 year old comment. 😅 I don't know anything about whether or not they were sued for doing a cover of this song since I couldn't find any information on it online, but I'm assuming you have a reliable source for that information... You know, because you would lose all credibility in your claims if you throw accusations around like that without evidence of it being true 😛 I'm not sure about the background drums they are singing to, but the vocals are theirs from the very first second until the end of the video, and the video is mostly entirely vocals... So no they didn't "steal" anything, I think the word you are looking for might be "made an exact copy" of the original song. Kind of like if a talented singer records a karaoke cover of a famous song and uploads it. Because then they would be in trouble too for copyright infringement. 🙂 So there could be a question regarding if Malukah and Peter's version is TOO close to the original song, because THEN I can see how there might be some copyright issues there. Since a cover has to be a "cover", and not a "step for step remake". 😊 I haven't heard the original so I don't know how similar the two versions are. They did write that the song is a "cover" in their video title. 🙂 Which does mean that they made a version that closely resembles the original song, but with THEIR singing and instruments. So again, no it isn't stealing, it's a "cover" which is a legitimate concept in the music industry hehe 😅 But even so, I have checked and can see that this song "Baba Yetu" is open for licensing so that artists (like Malukah and Peter) CAN get a license to use it to make a cover of it. 👈 So if a copyright claim was done against them, then they could just have gotten a license for this cover later on. Which makes it hard to believe when you claim they got "sued" over this song... So again, would love to know where this "sueing" information is coming from hehe. And regarding all your timestamps where you claim they "stole" parts... We ourselves can play the video and hear that your "expert analysis" on them "stealing" isn't entirely true. 😅 In all honestly though, your entire comment comes off sounding like "a jealous person who also tries to make a living off of singing", but failed hehe. So now you get offended seeing other singers on TH-cam having success.
@@JobeStroud Love how you say this when at the end the actual composer of the song gives a brief cameo. If he didn't have the right to allow them to use the song I doubt he'd have let 2k, the company that used it in the game who might be the only other ones with a licence, sue them without blacklisting them and I could see other composers following that example. Also no results for Malukah sued/suit so you're just lying.
I can only listen to this song once a month. I don't ever want to lose the feeling it gives me, the chills, the goosebumps, the tears in my eyes. If I listened to it more than that, those feelings might become diluted.
Joshua Rider or he could remain passionate about music while you continue hiding your own closeted sexual insecurities behind the veil of troll comments on TH-cam. But keep trying. Maybe coming out of your parent's basement once and a while would help build better interpersonal skills.
We can argue about the concepts of religion until our fingers bleed and our eyes twitch, but at the end of the day, this song is absolutely breathtaking even to a damned soul as mine. :-) And what an amazing performace by both singers! And I love how they put more focus on Hollens in 01:40, where Christopher Tin had the male singer in the background. And of course, everything after 02:42 simply melts the ice in my Scandinavian veins.
***** True but that was not what I was implying. More like it is nice to stop and smell the roses once and a while regardless of where you stand on the issue. Many people especially those who argue from passion instead of logic as you mentioned who don't agree with religion in any form can't see the forest through the trees while listening to this song. They get so caught up on the meaning behind it that they forget to just listen and appreciate the beauty of the song at face value.

I'm an atheist, but this is still a really cool song and I'll whistle or hum along regardless. (cuz I can't sing that, I'll never remember the words. Don't judge me, I speak Finnish not Swahili!)
A song composed by an asian guy in an African language sung by white people from a game about the rise of humanity. Now if that isn't awesome i don't know what is
Truly the pairing of your voice and peter hollens is nothing short of brilliance. Have listened to all your songs and love the energy and emotions that coalesce within your work. it truly is such a wonderful sound to hear. Thank you much for sharing your splendiferous talent with us. Truly the sound of such a passionate and beautiful voice helps carry many a wearied soul through the darkest of night. it whispers into there very soul to keep up the fight. it allows dreams of brighter days to become reality. thank you for being a flame in the dark. Such talent i applaud . Truly hats off and salute to both you and peter hollens.
I was shocked when I discovered this song actually is the "Lord's Prayer" in Swahili! Well, I haven't been converted to Christianism but I still love this cover. Never played Civilization, tho.
I saw this on twitter from the official Civilization VI website and thought I should check this out. I went to youtube so I could see it in full screen. When it started I immediately recognized MALUKAH! I thought this going to be great! It wasn't great. It was out of the galaxy exceptionally fantastic! I give it 5 out of 5 stars! Malikah is a rising star! Peter is already a star. Peter was lucky to get to work with Malukah. Bravo to both of you. That was a masterpiece!
Oh yeah, Grammy winning score from Civilization 4. The menu music always give me the goose bumps, and so does this rendition. Well done Malu and Peter!
Mazdak, thank youuuu! Yes, same here. I had to listen to the original a bunch of times to learn it and it aaaalways gave me goosebumps. Always! :D Hehe! Glad you like this cover!
malufenix Same here, there are only a few ones that manage that consistently, this one and the Skyrim one are two of them. Having this done by the two of you is pure perfection!
By far my favourite rendition of this song, of all time! (And I listen to versions of this whenever I feel down) Malukah's voice is just so ethereal and perfect and combined with Hollens' experience making his own music videos, it gives me shivers every time.
Malukah! I would love to hear you and Peter cover Sogno di Volare ("Dream of Flight") from the new Civilizations VI soundtrack! Honestly I would also love to see the two of you cover the Calling All Dawns album, as (possibly aside from Mado Kara Mieru, which requires three vocal ranges) the vocal timbre pairing you two have works perfectly with Christopher Tin's music. But I would settle for Sogno di Volare . . . and maybe a mashup cover of Calling All Dawns? Please?
I've been watching your channel ever since the "Dragonborn Comes" cover; and this song is still my favorite. Every time I listen, I can't help but smile. I hope your voice is still getting better, can't wait for your upcoming album!
MY. FUCKING. GOD. YES. Words can't express the feelings going through me right now, and I haven't even put my headphones yet, but with two great artist doing a cover of the best song ever, it can't be anything short of amazing. Seriously, play this with anything for +1000% epicness. Now I'm going to go to my alternate accounts so I can like this more than once.
This song makes me feel so happy, it makes me think of how far humanity has come from evolving as the most dominant species to the discovery of fire to unlocking the secrets of the atom and even leaving this planet.
***** Not really. The lyrics are invoking a supernatural, higher power; but the person doing the invoking is very human. The song is not about God, it is about mankind and the struggles we face. That is why people pray in the first place, because they feel helpless. You don't have to believe in God to sympathize with the singer.
***** very well put. Humans have come a long way and we should celebrate that, but it doesn't hurt to stop and wonder where did we come from in the first place ;]
***** Singing a prayer is not "About God" or at least his particular prayer is not. It is a man, asking for food and protection for his family. Beseeching a higher power, which may or may not exist, because he has nowhere else to turn.
***** Yeah, but there are also many people are zealously religious and not desperate. If you believe in God, you shouldn't just pray when your in trouble, your supposed to pray about everything: Thanking God and praising Him, and yes, asking for His aid, but not just that. Also, the Lord's Prayer, which should really be called the Disciples Prayer, is how Jesus told the disciples how to pray, and its not all about begging for God's aid. And finally, if you believe in God, He's not supernatural at all, He's as real as the air we breath. Okay, I'm done rambling now.
Such a mystical uplifting experience that still brings tears to my eyes. I swear it is because of this song that I survived my week in the hospital from surgery for cancer. I had to lay in the bed, but I could put on my earphones and close my eyes and my spirit would soar. I had it on loop and listened for hours at a time. That was years ago but I swear it saved me.
Hayden Lewis yeah he does. Nothing is possible without a God to make the rules. The universe is all worked out mathematically, there are laws of physics and thermodynamics that are never broken. Think about it. We are hurtling through space at a couple thousand miles per hour on a rock, with another rock spinning around us.. and you think no one is controlling that? Thats pretty terrifying to me. At the end of the day, beleave what you want, but just remember, you are going to dead for a long time, it's not worth it to assume that there is no God.
I dont get tired of hearing this version... YOUR version Malukah and Peter. wow. I simply hear it, sing with you and pray/sing along. love it and love that you worked togheter and give this to the world.
Just booted up civ 4 for the first time, I had played the pants off civ 5 and I got 4 & 3 in a humble bundle. When I got to the main menu and heard this song, I immediately thought of this video. Thanks for the great songs guys!
Chills. I saw this song performed on America's got talent by a choir group, they couldn't hold a candle to your rendition of this song. I had to come back and watch this again. Love both you and Peter Hollens.
I have listen to this song over a hundred times and every time I here you sing the last passage I think you are an angel. That was one moment of perfect beauty Malu. Thank You
lol Peter's a very expressive singer, while Malukah is almost the opposite. Very reserved in her facial expressions. Everyone sings differently, but we're all beautiful when we sing. :D
With at least 4000 hours put into the Civilization series going all the way back to Civilization 1, this was always one of my favorite bits of music from the series.
I love this song and I and I never tire of listening to it. The original was beautiful and yet with just you and Peter Hollens, whom I also love listening to, you sound just as wonderful and are nearly as great as a full orchestra. I thank you for covering this song.
I love this piece! I usually open the Civ game and let it run in the "menu mode" while i go about doing the chores... Now i'll gladly run your clip. Its magic!!!!!!!
I just sang this at my summer camp last week and I loved it so much. The camp is over now and I’m crying while listening to this. My school also sang this the year before I went up to the high school. The singers all graduated and the teacher retired.
I can see clearly your joy during your performance with Peter Hollens! And your joy - combined with B&W speakers - thrills me without ending. Thank your for that! Maybe I should do some fireworks with this song...
even though i am an atheist (not trying to start a comment war, just stating so please don't flame) and this is simply the lords prayer in swahili, i find this song enjoyable to listen to.
malufenix no problem! i listen to a little of everything, as long as it sounds good to my ear. thanks for the reply. first time i actually got a comment from someone whose work i enjoy! thanks for the great music too.
GamingPenguin4545 love your avatar. :D cthulhu fhtagn! also, i do not mind music with religious meaning as long as it sounds good. example i love hearing amazing grace played on my cherokee flute. at least when i get the notes right. ;p
I'm going to be totally honest, Malukah. Both you and Peter Hollens make me head bob on INSTINCT every single time I hear this song. Almost no other song makes me do that. It's that good.
These two are the best duo ! Both incredible voices. Also there's something special in Malukah's eyes.. like the beauty of the universe concentrated in a tiny space... wow amazing ! Thank you
I've also been waiting ages for these two to get together and do something. Simply awesome. Did Lindsey Stirling and malufenix ever do something ? I don't recall.
i just wana say thankyou for doing this Malukah and peter, i really would love to see you both do more songs like this, blow my mind, tiers to my eyes, well done you two :)
I was about to say how awesome this is regardless of the song's religious roots - great orchestration on Tom Anderson's part and the usual stellar work from Hollens and Malukah - but then I saw the comments and kind of felt like heaving a great big sigh. People find a tiny bit of something that'll lift their spirits or just keep them cheery through the day, barely more than a few harmless minutes on TH-cam, and some idiot shits all over it with baseless trolling. It might be the Lord's Prayer being sung in Swahili, but considering its roots in a Civilization game, it's really singing the praises of Humanity as a whole. With that in mind, getting stuck in your own preconceived notions of a corner of the world you haven't even visited instead of realizing just how awesome we are as a species is just sad. We all have our bad side. For instance, we can find baseless joy in egging others along in TH-cam comments. However, I always look to Civilization games as reminders that like it or not, we've come so far and have accomplished so much already. Armchair trolls aren't walking in the footsteps of their ancestors; they're debasing them.
Baba Yetu!!! A collaboration with Peter Hollens! Wooo!
*args* ... Germany :-\ paste.bka.li/2AM/
Great song, and you guys nailed it!
You should do a cover of Over the Hills and Far Away from the Sharpe series. That would be amazing.
Perfect. Danke M. Bergmann
malufenix and ***** , this was AWESOME. Think you guys should hit up Bethesda and do another collab for them to stick in the next Elder Scrolls game ;)
8 years and this is still my favorite version of this song.
Goosebumps each time I listen to that song :)
Aside from the original by Tin, I'd totally agree!
Absolute. Best Version ever. Still
I'm coming back to this too, their voices are just perfect.

Kieran Tobin Glory to our Lord who gave us the ability to create such beauty!
I'm an atheist, but this is still a really cool song and I'll whistle or hum along regardless. (cuz I can't sing that, I'll never remember the words. Don't judge me, I speak Finnish not Swahili!)
Folded?
A song composed by an asian guy in an African language sung by white people from a game about the rise of humanity. Now if that isn't awesome i don't know what is
Maluka is Mexican I believe.
well, not the rise of humanity but the rise of civilization.
yep. from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. Mexico =)
+María Angélica Monterrubio
Mexico =/= white?
hum, Mexico has a lot of European ancestry, specially in the north and in Mexico city. is not that uncommon to see white people.
Also this song has become the perfect song to wake up to in the morning. It breathes life right into me. Many thanks to all three
when I hear this song, it makes me cry. I'm so proud to be African.!!
takash bloodpaw What a beautiful thing to say! Thank you for listening. ***** and I loved recording this very much!
As you should be, Africa is the birthplace of our species after all.
Miles Hill:D thank you
African? isn't that like a Canadian saying they're North American? not wrong just a strange way of putting things.
This song can stand the test of time...
You guys have no idea how happy this song made me. Thank you so much for making this. I nearly cried tears of nostalgic joy.
Collin Moore Oh, that makes my day, Collin Moore. Thank you!
This is some of the best stuff I've heard from both of you singers. I think that you guys should do another song together, it is so beautiful
Always! :D Hehe! Glad you like this cover!
malufenix
Same here, there are only a few ones that manage that consistently, this one and the Skyrim one are two of them. Having this done by the two of you is pure perfection!
Maluka you are such an angel. Your gentle smile and voice are so calming, thanks for sharing you guys nailed this song so well.
Two of my most favoritest performers!!
Christopher Dudley Hehehe! Thank you, Christopher!!! :D
***** I have to completely agree. Looking forward for some time to these two collaborating. Hopefully not the last.
I miss this intro so much that I often play this video when preparing to play Civilization V. Which is *far* more frequent than I care to admit.
By far my favourite rendition of this song, of all time! (And I listen to versions of this whenever I feel down) Malukah's voice is just so ethereal and perfect and combined with Hollens' experience making his own music videos, it gives me shivers every time.
Still till this day, shivers down my spine.
Please?
Late to the party, but I totally agree this would be an even more amazing collab piece.
I have the playlist playing and when ever this comes on I cant help but replay this over and over. This is one of my favs of yours!
PiousMuffin hehe! Thank you so so so sooo much!!!
OMG mind blown at 0:29. You two are epic together. All this done with TWO people!!! SOO much talent. WOW.
***** Why not both? There are some very desperate people who are also zealously religious.
You are amazing both of you amazing vocals amazing song feeling high vibrations with this one
2:42 Is the best part. I keep coming back to this video because of that section. Truly beautiful, Malukah. Simply amazing.
Beautifull harmony.
It's a great day to come home and find out two of my favorite youtube cover artists working together!
Silent Dreams
Such a mystical uplifting experience that still brings tears to my eyes. I swear it is because of this song that I survived my week in the hospital from surgery for cancer. I had to lay in the bed, but I could put on my earphones and close my eyes and my spirit would soar. I had it on loop and listened for hours at a time. That was years ago but I swear it saved me.
I still say this should be Earth's global theme. This rendition of it, in fact.
Hayden Lewis Brave New World Menu Song could be better I think.
Hayden Lewis Doesn't mean that it isn't a beautiful piece of music mate.
Hayden Lewis God created humans so I think it has everything to do with humans doing great deeds.
Mark Surgeon god doesn't exist
Hayden Lewis yeah he does. Nothing is possible without a God to make the rules. The universe is all worked out mathematically, there are laws of physics and thermodynamics that are never broken. Think about it. We are hurtling through space at a couple thousand miles per hour on a rock, with another rock spinning around us.. and you think no one is controlling that? Thats pretty terrifying to me. At the end of the day, beleave what you want, but just remember, you are going to dead for a long time, it's not worth it to assume that there is no God.
You really look like you're having fun here! good to see!
Thanks for the great songs guys!
...this song has been stuck in my head for months... I'm not even mad :P
***** Hahaha! That's awesome!
Malukah was one of my first youtube crushes. Good to see my favorite a capella singer team up with her.
Wow....he has such a nice voice.....and your good as always. Had to like and comment in the first 15 seconds!
Hehehe! Yes, his voice is definitely amazing! :D Glad you liked the vid!!!! :D
malufenix I appreciate that you reply so soon to the videos...nice to see. Waiting with baited breath for your next one!
I saw the song title, and I saw who had uploaded it and instantly knew it would be amazing. I was right ;)
the song on its own is already gorgeous, this cover just makes it godlike
I remember starting up Civ4 the first time... Intro screen and the little sparks of light appearing on earth to this song. Magical.
One of my most favored videogame series, and my 2 favored cover vocalists.
How did you come up with making a cover of this song?
Nik Olai Peter is a Christian!!
yeah but still.
malu this is so amazing!!!
Chills. I saw this song performed on America's got talent by a choir group, they couldn't hold a candle to your rendition of this song. I had to come back and watch this again. Love both you and Peter Hollens.
Absolutely fantastic! I expect to use the replay button to an ungodly extent.
hahahaha! :D Thank you!
malufenix Keep up the good work!
I cannot do that...my replay button has already been broken a long time ago...what took you so long?
admiralomega I was saving myself for the right song to come along. Yeah, that works.
Add 'repeat' after 'youtube' in the URL and enjoy. :)
DEM FEELZ!
I have listen to this song over a hundred times and every time I here you sing the last passage I think you are an angel. That was one moment of perfect beauty Malu. Thank You
I think it's so funny that Malukah makes minimal facial expressions, while Peter is like BABA YETU >>:OOOOO
lol Peter's a very expressive singer, while Malukah is almost the opposite. Very reserved in her facial expressions. Everyone sings differently, but we're all beautiful when we sing. :D
CyricZ That is a very beautiful sentiment.
However I would counter that I've seen Johnny Vegas sing. *shudder*
Peter's face at the very beginning looks like he's just smelled a really really bad fart
Awesome cover of the very best Title-Song of a Civilization game ever.
been listening this for years now, still the best i've ever heard!
With at least 4000 hours put into the Civilization series going all the way back to Civilization 1, this was always one of my favorite bits of music from the series.
Such an uplifting song! I love it!
Excellent! Very well done!
Grinning Studios Thank youuuuuuuu!!!!! :D Heyyyt! hahaha!
I think Baby Malukah will love this one. Can't wait to play it for her. You and Peter make a great team. Very complimentary.
I just sang this at my summer camp last week and I loved it so much. The camp is over now and I’m crying while listening to this. My school also sang this the year before I went up to the high school. The singers all graduated and the teacher retired.
my friend showed me your videos, and I just can't believe how talented you are! I love your work :)
Is that the voice of an angel..?
Andrea Navarro 2 voices*
I can see clearly your joy during your performance with Peter Hollens! And your joy - combined with B&W speakers - thrills me without ending. Thank your for that! Maybe I should do some fireworks with this song...
Well this gave me chills throughout :D
That is super cool, Ledrang! I'm glad you liked it!!!! :D
I love your voice Malukah♥. Awesome Video/Song!
Genius absolutely one of my favorites by Peter and Malukah
Ahh memories i remember singing this in my school chorus...good times
even though i am an atheist (not trying to start a comment war, just stating so please don't flame) and this is simply the lords prayer in swahili, i find this song enjoyable to listen to.
It really means a lot to me that you were able to enjoy the music. Thank you, Dustin!
malufenix
no problem! i listen to a little of everything, as long as it sounds good to my ear. thanks for the reply. first time i actually got a comment from someone whose work i enjoy! thanks for the great music too.
Well, I never knew this was the Lords prayer, explains why it sounds somewhat like a church song at times (Not that thats a bad thing)
GamingPenguin4545
love your avatar. :D cthulhu fhtagn!
also, i do not mind music with religious meaning as long as it sounds good. example i love hearing amazing grace played on my cherokee flute. at least when i get the notes right. ;p
This never gets old!!
tnx!
Nice job! :)
Thank you! :D
Não consigo parar de escutar...
This is the most beautiful thing I've heard in a long time. You never dissappoint me, Malukah!
I studied languages and feel like an idiot for not realizing what this song was about from the title XD. So good
Religion or no religion, I think we can all agree this should be the anthem of the Earth.
Agreed this is now the human races anthem
ObSkillz1 Agreed 100%
@@outrageousgamer315 - My Vote is in and it says 'Yes.'
I like the dream of flight better
Yes to this as the anthem of humanity
I'm going to be totally honest, Malukah. Both you and Peter Hollens make me head bob on INSTINCT every single time I hear this song. Almost no other song makes me do that. It's that good.
I genuinely cried,
Malu AND Peter Hollens?! Covering Civ IV?!!
Cannot. Process. Gormally.exe has crashed.
Jason Gormally hahahahahhahaha!
ROFL!
These two are the best duo ! Both incredible voices. Also there's something special in Malukah's eyes.. like the beauty of the universe concentrated in a tiny space... wow amazing ! Thank you
i listen to this song and for some reason i get images of the lion king in my head lol
still a awesome job :D
That'd be because it's African So is the story the lion king is based off of
Hamlet is not particularly African...
Nor is Kimba
Nor is the lord's prayer! :)
This doesn't deserve 500k viewes
It deserves 500 million :D
500Kmillions
How can it have 500 million views when there are only 7 million people on the world?
MJakMinecraft Hummmm.... sry, i cant figure if your being sarcastic or serious xD
You know its 7 billion, right? :P
JP Fragoso 7 billion? nah... Impossible...
If there are 7 billion people on the world than why haven't they fall from the end of the world yet?
Absolutely amazing. Gorgeous vocals, perfect harmonies, amazing instrumentation. Be proud of yourselves!
Nice finally a song together
👱 = peter
👩 = malukah
I've also been waiting ages for these two to get together and do something. Simply awesome. Did Lindsey Stirling and malufenix ever do something ? I don't recall.
Thank you for the word of God..
Прекрасная подача молитвы "Отче наш" на суахили.
Malukah, you and Peter give me so much joy in these times of darkness. Thank you so much.
holy shit this is beautiful :D
Incredibly, I prefer this cover more than the original AMV.
The original AMV? Animated Music Video?
i just wana say thankyou for doing this Malukah and peter, i really would love to see you both do more songs like this, blow my mind, tiers to my eyes, well done you two :)
Best 3 Minutes and 30 seconds of my life :O
Daniel Sauvé Very well said.
Daniel Sauvé One of the best comments I've had the pleasure of reading. Well said!!!
Beautiful song, sang by two very talented people! Thank you for this! Keep going talents like you are rare!
Okay, I'm modding my game to replace the intro track with this version of the song, WOW.
