  • As the Market for used gear starts to get flooded. Guitar shops are going to have to be selective on what used gear to bring in. Baxter and Jonathan give their thoughts on used gear and why you might hear the words no.

    I once got a “no” from a used guitar store on one of my guitars - the reason stated was that they would have to do a refret job on it to resell it and it wouldn’t be worth it to them. I don’t think I was even looking for cash - just a trade-in on something they had in the store. The funny thing about that? Every used guitar I bought from that shop had frets that were shot. So, they clearly would not have been doing a refret to resell it anyway.

    This video is gold, explains everything we hate about doing trade-ins from a retailers point of view. I'm in Australia and I used to work in a guitar store. A few years back, a guy walked in with one of those old 80s Gibson J-25 plastic back Ovation-style acoustic guitars. The Ovation vibe was already enough to have most of the staff grimacing upon sighting it, but this one was some f'd up factory green burst. He hadn't even bothered to put fresh strings on and the fretboard was caked in about 30 years of finger grease. We told him it's not even worth $50 to us. He was HIGHLY offended!
    "It's a friggin' Gibson mate, it's worth at least three grand!"
    Yeah, nah, mate. Sorry.

      But I’m skinny bc I run a lot and eat healthy. But if you didn’t know me and you seen my missing tooth and size, you’d probably assume I’m a stereotypical”junky” bc I’m skinny and missing a front tooth.
      Like it was most embarrassing month of my life bc I looked like a junky. Even in nice clothes.
      So got a whole month I always had people looking at my mouth when talking and get weird looks and egos from people I didn’t know or who knew my situation with my toooth.

To be fair, it is the heaviest 15 watt amp you will ever pick up in your life.

    I think most peoples problem with guitar stores isn’t that they need to make money. I think it’s obvious businesses are businesses. I don’t think people expect guitar stores to pay them some crazy amount for their used gear.
    My issue with guitar stores isn’t making money- it’s the little extra disrespectful little chunk. Like, we all have bills, not just stores. But when you buy a brand new guitar at say joe blows for 1800 plus tax, and a month later you keep your business with joe blows like a loyal custie, and they say the most they can give you for the guitar on a trade is like 650. Then they put it back on their shelf for 1600 Yaknow? That little bigger bite than is necessary. I’m not complaining or angry. I’m just explaining why I don’t use guitar stores anymore. I am not alone.
    Would a little 15% more paid on good stock trades would have gotten the industry starved quicker? I would think you’d be better off making 15% less off of us to keep our business for 20 years type thing, but what do I know. I’m just a hopeless guitar addict.
    Luckily for you guys you have youtube. But my local stores are donezo with me lol. I’ll do my own setups.

    I don't mind getting 50% of the value of a guitar when I sell it to a store. The only issue I have is getting low balled on trades. The shop is getting what they asked for the gear you traded towards, plus whatever they sell your trade-in for. They are making profit on both items, yet I have been to several stores that go as low as 30-40% trade in value.

    Guitar gear won’t get much at a guitar store unless it’s real special, which it often isn’t to anybody but the owner that loves it. Reverb is scary. Guitars make a warm campfire & Amps can be broken down & turned into amateur radios. You have a Banjo for sale? Do you have an accordian to go with it? There must be a kid in your family that needs a worn out guitar for Christmas. He’ll be able to start lessons in a few years when he turns 5.

    You are spot on that a store pays you lower because they then have to deal with it not selling for a year, fraudulent buyers, buyers complaining about non-issues and returning it, things damaged in shipping, etc... I sold a Fender Jazzmaster recently for $900 cash and I'm certain the shop will list it for at least $1,400. That $500 is the convenience of me dumping it on the store to deal with any complications.

    Spaceman Music in Ottawa does a decent business in used guitars and amps. They pay half of what they believe they can sell it for. If it's over $500, they will put it on consignment, whereby they will take 20% of the resale. It's a buyer's market for electric guitars, that's the way it works.

    This topic has certainly been beatin to death, bottom line is folks that are butthurt by either a lesser price on their axe they anticipated, or even the guitar shop saying sorry we don’t want it should just do the legwork and sell the item on their own. The guitar shop is certainly going to lowball the value so they can make a few shekels on it’s eventual sale. Selling gear is almost always a hassle, especially these days with all the scams going on which really makes it a nightmare.

      It depends on what you're selling? Not that I'd ever sell a guitar like this in the first place. But for example if I owned an old Fender, Gibson or Martin, etc... & had to sell it for money. I'd NEVER sell one of those guitars to or on any of the places mentioned. Economics101 "supply & demand" know the true value of the music gear you're selling. Whether you're hard up or not don't let a place like GC low-ball you if you do you're just cheating yourself. Cuz many instruments & gear people think have no value would be surprised what they're sitting on anymore today! 🤔 Just saying... +Peace Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friends+ 🤘😜🤘

    It's because the guitar shop wants to make money. Best way to do that is to sell brand new stuff to lawyer blues players. That's why shops like this have gone to the boutique and I forgot about the low end budget player. It's the same thing that has happened in the housing market only rich people can buy houses eventually only rich people will own music equipment so they can hang it in their doctor's office and impress their rich friends

    I can't trade in any guitars I bought from Long & McQuade in any of their stores. They know what I paid years ago by computer records and they base their offer off that old price, not what the current value is for a used one.
    Example: I paid $1200 for a used 2018 Explorer in 2019, list was $1900 new. List price is now $2550 new, Reverb asking prices are $1500 and up and they don't want to give me more than $800 (all prices CAD) on a trade. Trade is supposed to be 80% of what they'll sell it for, straight buy is 70%.
    Doing my own selling is all I can do, and I really don't want to deal with people.
    The only saving grace of that chain is that some of the stores have ridiculously low prices on used gear sometimes and I have snagged some of those. Just don't look to trade up later.

    • @Polyphemus.
      @Polyphemus. 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Where does the 80% come from? Is that their specific policy or did you just make that up?
      As a general rule _all_ retail stores, not just music retail, need to roughly double their money on everything they sell in order to stay viable. This profit covers costs such as staff, rent, electricity, internet, tax, etc. It's not always exactly double, but it pretty much needs to average out that way, whether you're selling guitars, shoes, dishwashers or hamburgers.
      If Explorers were $1900 in 2019, it probably cost them around $950. If they're selling one used for $1200, they probably paid about $600 for it, not 80% ($960), that'd be more than what they buy new ones for, which is silly. If they go for $2550 new now, they're probably paying around $1275. If they can only get $1500 for them used, they need to be paying about $750, not 80% ($1200). That's only $75 less than they can buy new ones for, which they can make a lot more profit from. The $300 they'll make giving you $1200 will just get gobbled up in taxes and other business costs straight away. Sure, maybe they could make an exception for you, but they'll need to make up the other $450 they didn't get from the deal somewhere else.
      I get that you think your stuff is worth more, but that's just the reality of how retail works. The $800 they offered you is more than fair.

    • @cageliner
      @cageliner 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Polyphemus. This is how selling or trading works in Canada at L&M: I see a guitar I want, it's $2500. I have one to trade. They determine they can sell it for $1500. They offer 80% of that- $1200. I pay $1300 difference for the new one.
      If I want to sell it outright, I'll only get 70%, or $1050.
      I've spent a lot of money at L&M. That's how their used pricing works, and each store determines what their resale price will be and often they want to price it low to move it. Not always, though.
      L&M pays much more than 50% of the retail for new guitars, or that's at least what they tell the managers.
      I have bought used guitars and amps at L&M for much less than anything I could find on Reverb (where I window shop only LOL.).
      Because I bought it an an L&M location, they know when, and what I paid. They use that info to low ball, and don't allow for increased value over years.
      So I would only trade gear that I didn't buy there, and it would still likely be low balled.

    • @Polyphemus.
      @Polyphemus. 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@cageliner Wow, that's wild! I'm surprised they can make a profit paying 80% of their expected final sale price. I'm in Australia, the shop I used to work at paid about 50% - 55% of recommended retail price (RRP) for most things, but that's before our goods and services tax (GST - 10%) gets added. Throw in freight from wholesalers to the store on top of that and you're probably looking at around 60%. And we would never sell anything at RRP anyway, most things were advertised at 20% below that. So if something listed for $1000 RRP we'd probably sell it for about $800, making us about $200. If you came in with a guitar we thought we might get $1500 maximum for, we'd probably offer you $800 too, and then sell it for about $1250 just to get it out the door! $125 of that goes to the government for GST, the store profits about $325. I know it sucks dealing with people, but you'll get more for it by selling it yourself. Good luck with it anyway!

    • @greggwilson3527
      @greggwilson3527 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That is correct on the long and mcquade canada policy for trade in pricing. I have done lots with them over the years. You can find some fair priced used gear and I just grabbed a used 2016 fender elite strat in Olympic white for $1500 Canadian. The nice thing is you can rent any of the used gear first and see if you really like it and 60% of your rent cost goes to tour purchase if you decide to by it.

    A few new and used buyer tips: (1)Don't fall into the FOMO trap, (2)Buy at a reduced price, (3)Ask yourself can I justify the price, (4)When buying new or used check return policies and ask questions, (5)When buying used items like Eventide or Positive Grid make sure you get the codes for the software, (6)Check daily deals, (7)Ask yourself what is the purpose, (8)Does the condition justify the asking price, (9)Offer less but nothing silly, (10)You can always contact the seller ask their best price...there are many more tips from others but these are my buying tips.
