'In '98, Amit Shah Criticised Nuke Tests, Vajpayee's 'Greed for Publicity'-Author of New Book on BJP

  • In an interview that will create considerable controversy and provoke the wrath of BJP supporters, the author of a recent study of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani has claimed that in 1998, when he was 33 and a young MLA, Home Minister Amit Shah was critical of prime minister Vajpayee’s nuclear tests. Vinay Sitapati, the author of ‘Jugalbandi’, an account of the Vajpayee-Advani relationship and who teaches at Ashoka University, claims that in 1998 Amit Shah wrote to prime minister Vajpayee sharply criticizing the nuclear tests. In his alleged letter, he wrote: “Respected Vajpayee Ji, because of your greed for publicity you have forever lost Pakistan Occupied Kashmir”. Sitapati adds that when Vajpayee summoned him to Delhi for an explanation Shah told him that Morarji Desai had told him: “if we both (India and Pakistan) become nuclear powers, we can never win back PoK through the war”.

I've watched Karan Thapar for over 20 years, and I've admired him for a long time. This interview was extremely painful to watch for multiple reasons. Karan gives away his own position all too often, while barely allowing Sitapati to establish the premise and tenor of the book. This was no interview. This was an inquisition. And one hardly heard from the academic. Picking up 3 points from the book, and spending close to 54 minutes primarily because Karan does not agree with the writer's interpretation! I am actually quite appalled that Vinay Sitapati, who is a trained lawyer, does not adhere to the basics of attribution. This is the first thing that is taught in law school. You shall use quotation marks, only -- and only, if you are reproducing the text verbatim. If something has been paraphrased, it should be without quotation marks, with a footnote providing the source of the information.
Karan has quite rightly taken up issue with the use of quotation marks by Sitapati, especially when the text in the book is a summary of the information narrated by three people -- none of whom had a copy of the letter to show to Sitapati.

As if karan doesn't write hearsay..he wrote in his book (based on hearsay) prashant kishor showed Narendra Modi interview of him again and again but in lallantop interview interviewer asked him about that, prashant kishor completely denied that... th-cam.com/video/Kyo1y8Pw3ww/w-d-xo.html
If hearsay is a bad standard why doesn't he apply that standards in his books..

It's a fascinating book, but I completely agree with Karan that placing that statement attributed by third-party sources to a letter from Amit Shah within quotation marks is misleading. On the overall, however, the book has relied on a large number of authoritative sources. Surprised that a product of NLSIU, Harvard and Princeton would place quotation marks around what is a third-party recollection of a statement from a letter when the author has not seen the letter, unless the sources themselves claimed that they had some way to prove that their recollection was a verbatim translation. Karan should actually be admired for calling that out because this one thing sticks out like a sore thumb in the entire book (other than saying that bhang contains opium) and the author would be doing himself a favour if he recognises this before moving on.

Karan, in the process of pushing your interpretation of the event, you are eating away the space which you are supposed to give to your guest. Beyond a certain point, your hard push sounds ugly. By the way keep doing good work but remember balance is the key.
