In general I tend to prefer open world racers, but event based ones also clearly have their merits, such as, as you mentioned, variety.

      I think the only thing I didn’t like about was the so called ‘rubber banding’ where when crashing your opponent they just catch up really quickly. It’s annoying at times but in terms of how much content there and how good the content it is, burnout 3 holds up extremely well, the controls, the variety, the soundtrack, the presentation were all honestly more than amazing, one of my favourite games of all time.

    OG Burnout does feel that was made in a very different direction from the future games (racing with a very high risk factor arcade-style, rather than becoming the danger with high speed tricks and totaling other cars) because of how it was clearly inspired off the arcade game Thrill Drive, which focused in racing...and the horrifying aftermath of you and your car whenever you ended up crashing. There's a passing resemblance with how the crashes are presented and even the HUD markers on top of racing for survival rather than racing to destroy.

  • @mateuspokemon01
    @mateuspokemon01 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I really never cared about crash mode so it's absence from Burnout Dominator was kind of a good thing for me since I always skip it during the main carrer mode.
    That being said I still think that Dominator is very underrated. Traffic checking is great, but makes the game too easy for me. The Burnout mechanic which makes you keep your boost indefintely is a much more interesting mechanic for me since this series is all about that risk vs reward factor and the Burnout challenges where always the most satisfying to complete since they were so hard.
    You also have to take in account that the game had a lot of cut content, and it still turned out great. The devs were really on a tight schedulle, and still delivered, all while developing for two platforms simultaneously and it was their first Burnout game.
    I also would never rank a Burnout game without the takedown mechanic above one that has it (well, maybe the DS game would be the only exception, since it was pretty bad). It's liretally what makes or breaks the game for me, and that's what makes it so difficult for me to enjoy the first 2 games, even though I can recognize how they walked so that the following games could run.

    • @markdebruyn1212
      @markdebruyn1212 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I too did rarely care about crash mode and i also think that traffic checking made "Revenge" too easy

    i've never really liked the open world aspect of Paradise to be honest. don't get me wrong, i think it's a great game, but i think the creative diverse environments suit this series better than a single open world location

    • @madebyjordan
      @madebyjordan ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Agreed. I like Paradise because it has the bright environmental aesthetics of Takedown (best in the series IMO) but unlike Takedown, the roads aren't as purpose-built for intense drifting and takedowns etc - too many races end up having the cars go separate ways to a goal which just rips the fun out of the whole takedown element of the game.

    • @TheRageLivesOn
      @TheRageLivesOn ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@madebyjordan yup, and just being in the same environment doing the same couple of routes to the finish over again begins to feel very samey very quickly. going around the world in 3 and Revenge breaks up the same looking and feeling environment, and like you said, the routes feel purpose built for action in those games, while as Paradise just honestly doesn’t have that same feeling

    • @madebyjordan
      @madebyjordan ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheRageLivesOn exactly. I still enjoy a rip around Burnout Paradise (for lack of a Burnout 3 on a modern console) but it can just feel pretty aimless at times - especially stopping to correct a missed junction. That kind of stuff is just so un-Burnouty - the whole momentum just grinds to a halt. It actually feels like that soul-destroying moment in other racing games where you have to reverse out of a barrier, i.e nobody enjoys it and it takes you completely out of the flow.

    • @idakev
      @idakev หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Revisiting Revenge on Series X, I'm surprised how few tracks there are though. Game only has racing 13 tracks which I believe is less than Burnout 3. Started to find the game surprisingly repetitive and it didn't live up to my memories even though it has some mechanics unique to it which are very fun. idk, maybe I prefer the PS2 version or something instead of the 360 version. Bloom and contrast in the 360 version also makes it hard to see what's going on.
      Where as while I also always enjoyed Paradise too, replaying via the remaster made me I remember that I actually love that game. Paradise City is a really well designed, fun map. The jumps on Big Surf Island are fantastic. Revenge not living up to my expectations on a replay made me appreciate how great NFS: Hot Pursuit (2010) is too.

  • @Doubleohstevo

    The crash mode in Revenge is so good,that even my Girlfriend at the time,would sit and play it with me. 'come on then it's my turn' lol. We'd battle for most money damage caused. She was also scarily good at Crazy Taxi 2 on Dreamcast. I would have to sit for about 1h 30mins for her to finish. She'd score in the tens of millions lol. I actually never did beat her score at that. Sonic Adventure 2 on Dreamcast was another bonding game. The Chao garden and the races etc. Good times. :( The best track in the series is Big Surf Shores for me. (Burnout 2) The music and everything is just perfect on that track. Brings back so many memories.

    Burnout Revenge is arguably one of my favorite racing games of all time next to Need for Speed Underground, its so damn addicting. Ive tried Paradise and it didn't hook me as much as revenge but after hearing ur thoughts on it im definitely gonna get it another shot.

    • @KekusMagnus
      @KekusMagnus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Paradise's greatest strength is the multiplayer experience, though barely anyone plays it now and the ones that do know the map by heart so it's hard to compete in races.
      In Single-player, the game heavily focuses on casually around driving around and memorizing the map. There is no fast travel, the map is littered with collectibles, events are unlocked by finding their starting line and they all end at the same handful of locations, so the game really expects you to just cruise and explore a lot of the time. It was novel at the time and the map is great, but open-world racing games have become the norm and it lacks the crazy high octane thrills of Burnout 3 and Revenge, so it hasn't aged as well as those. Unless you manage to race online that is...

    Burnout 3 is definitely better than Paradise.
    Although i love paradise, and its cool and all but it gets very boring after a while. Burnout 3 is perfect, there arent any game breaking bugs, no annoying bugs which are obvious, you can encounter some bugs but they arent much for example not giving you the takedown point, or giving you the takedown point even though you didnt even touch that oponent. Its just a PERFECT game overall. Sure Revenge has many improvements, but it also has a lot more bugs, doesnt have some features that made Burnout 3 so good (for example singleplayer besides career). These 2 games are pretty much equal, but I'd give 3 the first place, purely because it is more userfriendly, more consistent and rather fun than challenging.

    Paradise doesn't even deserve to be in the top 3 honestly. The open world is kinda repetitive, the races get so repetitive because of the fixed finish locations. You end up having to take the same routes for pretty much every race.

    burnout point of impact was my introduction to burnout. the "green car" is to this day one of my favourite looking cars and is a MASSIVE reason why I love tuner cars in the real world. that and also watching fast and the furious around the same era. burnout takedown was my most played (being that my point of impact disc was scratched and I could never play it) and my most played would have to be paradise simply because the amount of things you can do in that game. 2. Burnout Revenge
    3. Burnout Paradise
    4. Burnout 2
    5. Burnout Dominator
    6. Burnout Legends
    7. Burnout
    The reason I put 3 above Revenge is simple. Traffic checks. While I was a fan of that idea at first too and thought it was funny, it gets boring very quickly and takes away a lot of the risk reward system perfected in Burnout 3. Paradise then made traffic check more appropriate with the game's design, in order not to take away too much from the risk-reward experience that made B3 spectacular.
    As for Paradise being in third place, the lack of a proper Crash mode like in the last 2 games + no Aftertouch, feels like some of the content has been stripped away. Though, new features and gameplay aspects have been implented so it's a win-lose situation. Some people also crap on the open world design but I actually enjoy it as much as the linear design.
    Anyway, you can't go wrong with any of the top 3, they're all excellent and dare I say, the best the arcade racer genre has to offer. They should be purchasable as a trilogy on modern platforms with 120fps support.

    Thing I liked from the first Burnout is survival mode, where the traffic density is high and RNG-spawn, and you only got one chance of driving. You crash, you done. Burnout - I have a love/hate relationship with this game. It looks pretty good and controls well, but at the same time, I find it frustratingly hard. You have to get insanely close to the other cars to get a "near miss", which is dangerous because you crash at the drop of a hat. One time I just ran over some debris from someone else's crash and it said I crashed. I've never been able to get first place on anything but the first track and even that's hard for me.
    Burnout 2 - MUCH better game! Much easier to earn boost, and all the events, with the exception of the last pursuit, seem much more fair. I also actually prefer the crash junctions in this game to the later ones. I love the slow-motion crashes and not having to rely on gimmick bonus items to hit the target amounts.
    Burnout 3 - Great game! Although I absolutely hate the formula 1 cars. I've never been able to beat the grand prix that requires using them.
    Burnout Legends - While it IS a remix of content from the first three games, I still consider it worth playing, simply for the fact that it lets you race on tracks from the first two games, but using the takedown mechanics of the third game.
    Burnout Dominator - I haven't played this one extensively, but I've played it a little. I think it has some of the most scenic and beautiful tracks in the series. Bushido Peak is my favorite.
    Burnout Revenge - I've only played this one a little. I always found it strange that you can just plow through traffic going the same way like you're driving some indestructible, sci-fi super-car. Also, the shortcuts are super-frustrating because they put obstacles along the edges for you to smash into unless you drive perfectly, often making the shortcuts into a liability.
    Burnout Paradise - I've never played this. I want to, but I morally object to the idea of paying for content delivered digitally, that can't be backed up. There's no physical copy for the PS3 or Xbox 360 that includes the major DLC (big surf island), and I'm not even sure if it can still be downloaded. Even if it can, it will be locked to the system that downloaded, meaning if it ever dies, you have to hope you can re-download it. What about Burnout Paradise Remastered? I don't have those consoles, and it still needs to download patches, so same situation. Hey, I'll just get it for Windows, right? The Windows version is ENTIRELY download-only and infected with Denuvo DRM that negatively affects performance. Point me to a COMPLETE copy on physical media that doesn't need to download anything else to have the entire game, and I'll happily buy it.
    Burnout Crash - Never played this.

    Such a great franchise without a single bad mainline entry, would gladly buy a bundle on PC if ea would quit hoarding their ips in the dungeon. 3 and Revenge deserve a re-release with proper widescreen support and uncapped fps at 4k. The world needs to play these games again to be reminded there’s more to the racing genre than sims that want to grab your wallet for micro transactions and charging ludicrous amounts for only one car. I love licensed cars and tracks but sometimes I just want to wreck my opponents in insane ways that those licenses just don’t let devs do that sort of thing anymore.

    I totally disagree with you. Burnout 1 was amazing when it came out and didn't look low budget. Burnout 1 and 2 are the only two good Burnouts in my opinion. To begin with, when we talk about Burnout, we must first talk about Thrill Drive, the Konami arcade game that inspired Burnout's creator. A game where you drive at top speed, avoiding traffic jams and fatal accidents. The essence of Burnout is skill and avoiding crashes at all costs, not creating them to score points. What's more, the OSTs for these two opuses have been specially created, with more tragic-sounding music on the final lap to add to the tension. This is something that has disappeared from 3 onwards, with the horrible "EA tracks" and the DJ adding another layer of clowning. In my opinion, a good video game should have its own dedicated music. Using rap or metal music in partnership with a record company only serves to sell records. Before EA got involved, Burnout 3 was supposed to be horrific, with screams, the sound of breaking glass and horrifying music... It would have been the best Burnout ever. th-cam.com/video/SWrX3vo8G50/w-d-xo.html

    Personally, I enjoyed Burnout 1 a lot, but for a different reason.
    Compared to Burnout 2, it felt more thrilling and tense with the AI keeping me on my toes. However, the game was also quite frustrating, considering how easy it is to get blindspotted by traffic around turns. Then again, it is also more fun to cause pile-ups there, since you usually don't fly off the track when you crash, but instead block the road and cause other opponents to crash.
    I wouldn't exactly compare them to the rest of the series due to how different they are, gameplay wise.

    1. Revenge: My first Burnout game (OG Xbox) Only one where I can say I caused millions in damages with a Carl's Jr. Food Truck. Feels like an acid trip version of a Racing Movie.
    2. Paradise (+Remastered) Still play it time to time. Brings cars from every installment. The pinnacle of Crashing simulations in the Burnout Series. The Racing aspect was on par with the best of the franchise. Was so iconic it pretty much was used as the template for the 2011 NFS: Most Wanted reboot.
    3. Takedown: The start of the rise to gaming icon status. Felt like a truly competitive and aggressive racing game and sold the idea perfectly.
    4: Legends: For its time, it was honestly the best way to kill time when you're out and about.
    5: Dominator: Had it for the PS2. Brought it to a Video Game Day in 5th Grade. Taught them how to play, and left about 3 dozen kids scrambling for copies of Takedown and Revenge.
    6: 2 (Point of Impact): A small but substantial improvement and the beginning of finding the secret Burnout Formula.
    7: 1: The beginning of it all. Very dated and flat in comparison to its offspring, but its unfair when you throw it on a list against the future generations that became gaming GOATs
    8: Crash: Brought me actual physical pain to see how watered down and PG this looks in comparison to Takedown and Revenge like my god PLEASE take Burnout's namesake off this travesty. I would take a remastered Switch port of Dominator over this. How GameInformer gave it a 7.5 out of 10 absolutely bewilders me. Especially after their review stated AND I QUOTE from their September 2011 review: "All the while, Crash teeters back and forth between exciting and obnoxious." Enough said.

    Man I miss Burnout, but luckily I have some alternatives if you love Burnout!:
    *-Flatout Series:* Before Wreckfest, there was Flatout. If you want a realistic Burnout, Flatout is for you! It's derby on its fun! (Sorry Wreckfest)
    ...Maybe you'll want to evade the Wii and the 3rd one. 4th is ok, but nothing special.
    *-Dangerous Driving:* Made by some of the devs who worked for Burnout and NFS:HP 2010, this is a REAL spiritual successor to Burnout 3!
    *-Danger Zone Series:* But before Dangerous Driving, there was a Crash Mode only game. I heard it's fun.
    *-Need For Speed: Most Wanted 2012:* It's Burnout in Need For Speed... Yeah, it's a bit blurry for both franchise, but hey, it's made by Criterion Games, and it's good!
    *-Ridge Racer Unbounded:* Okay, okay, this one is complex to explain: you know Spilt/Second?
    Split/Second is kinda like Mario Kart but you do tricks like Drift, Draft, etc. and gain powers. You then use your powers to attack your opponents, open shortcut or change routes to catch-up the 1st racer, if the tracks give you the opportunity. It's a hidden gem, and I HIGHLY recommend you!
    Now, if Split/Second uses red shells, Ridge Racer Unbounded uses the star power. That's where the Burnout-isk feeling comes from. Also made by the Wreckfest devs, and have a nice track editor!
    That's all I have, and hey, *Totally Tubular Jonathan,* you can use this as a video!
    (NOTE: I didn't put Wreckfest as that's less Burnout compared to Flatout, but I will put it as a honorable mention)

It gives you a better advantage on how many cars you can get in the pile. Plus, you can control your your car or what's left of it while crashing. Since it's online, you can get the highest score on that road and it pops up on your friend's feed that you have the high score. Also,. I think the soundtrack was the weakest in Paradise. A bunch of friends and I were top 1000 in Burnout Revenge on 360. We were even part of the petition for them to open the servers back up when they first shut them down. I sank a hell of a lot of hours into that game. ... And I don't regret a single moment 🏎️

    About burnout legends, most of the content is from burnout 2 and 3, there's only 1 track from burnout 1, and one car from burnout 1 (roadster, but its based on its burnout 2 design so does it really count as someone added from burnout 1?)

    Sweet opinion but I want to hear your thoughts on which map is better i’m sorry to waste your time but I want to know what map is good there’s some I don’t like and there’s some I like, and when I tried burn out 3 for the first time, it was amazing. I loved the like car movement everything. It’s fine If you don’t wanna do it, I don’t mind. And have a great Ride BURNOUT!

    >Burnout Legends is “un-compromised”
    I disagree, the fact that Team Fusion was able to royally mess up a PSP port is beyond my understanding Lol. Starting with how they fucked up the LODs for all of the b3 and b2 models by “smoothing” them out makes the experience god awful and the cars look god awful especially the roadster classic, and compact classic. The ea “‘05-‘06 piss filter” makes most of the tracks such as Alpine look like a barren desert compared to the original and that why they had access to agreeably the worst b1 track where burnouts physics just doesnt work with harbourtowns tight turns and that b3s crash mode and junctions were simply “copy and pasted” over instead of adding new junctions in the b2 locations.
    Burnout Legends is just not an uncompromising experience, its just cheap port that could of had tons of potential.

    2 will always be the best. To me, it's the perfect blend of arcade and realistic racing games. And the soundtrack is amazing, especially how they made it play the good part when you had boost

    Takedown is perfect, Revenge looks the part and could have topped 3 but traffic checking made it too easy, greatly reduces the risk of driving like a maniac.

    Burnout Dominator was my favorite. The racing aspect was just incredible and the boost sound incredible and the best out of the series.Getting x48 burnout chains was the most invigorating thing ever.I don't care about the crash mode or crashing in general and I enjoyed Dominator for the racing aspect solely and no other series has come close to matching the racing aspect except for Paradise. I think Paradise is the best in the series offering a wide variety of activities and cars. For someone like me who only cares about the racing you can do that, you only like takedowns well you can do that or if you like survival you can do that ect.

    I have watched over a dozen reviews on the Burnout games and YOU are the ONLY one who has mentioned BURNOUT REVENGE!! What’s wrong with these other ppl? To me Revenge was clearly the BEST in the series, the crash breaker, the cars and tracks… it’s finally good to hear that someone else loved this game as much as I did. Nearly every video talks about how great Takedown was but never even mentions Revenge (makes me wonder if they ever even played it). It’s one of the few games that I refused to sell over the years and I still have it. Wish they would remake it with an online version. I don’t understand this world sometimes.
