What is not clear from this vid (which I eventually figured out) is that to eliminate the black parts, you have to have a colour solid underneath the Shape Layer in order for the Screen mode to work. Also, what may not be apparent, is that to eliminate the black parts from the ON screen light ray effect, it's the same: put a colour solid underneath and set the White Solid's mode to Screen. Furthermore, if you then want this to be transparent, add an adjustment layer above the White Solid/Shape Layer and apply the _Keylight (1.2)_ effect to it and select the colour of your underlying solid. Bingo, your glow effect without the underlying solid colour and no black parts. Hope this helps someone.

Hi, you can toggle between creating a shape and a mask using the same tool. Try toggling this option and make sure the layer you want to mask is selected. Included a screenshot of where you can find these buttons shorturl.at/fptKQ good luck!

You can't. But it's very simple to do in after effects. However there are some good pre-made light ray clips on youtube so maybe the easiest option is to find some of these clips if you want fast and easy light rays without using AE.

You went way too fast from "create a rectangle bigger than your frame". I have no idea how you pulled up a green screen around your frame and you went too fast from there on

Yes. Add the tint effect to the layer. You can map black and white to whatever colors you would like
