Amazing tutorial! I'm having trouble trying to get new particles to appear in front of previous particles. In your example the subject is travelling away from the camera whereas I'm trying to create a similar effect with the subject approaching the camera and it doesn't look right. Any ideas?
Hi! Not sure what the problem is, but try Pre-compose and then time-reverse.
The brilliance of this is not the tutorial, is that you figured out how to do this. This is definitely thinking outside the box. I want to know how long it took you to figure out this out. The only thing different for me is, instead of using rotoscoping. After effects I will use magic mask in resolved, and then bring that back into after effects.
Thank you for your kind feedback. I came up with the motion trail effect when I was trying to figure out why the Particle Playground effect was needed, because at first it seemed useless to me :)

my rotobrush tool does not go as smoothly as yours... holy moly its such a pain to go frame by frame and trying to fix the mask but it ruins the entire mask when I change it every time lool

Holding ALT will replace the footage you select with the Photoshop sequence
