It was so helpful to see this analysis. I've wondered why some QBs seem to wait so long to throw, and now I think it's because they don't read the field like you are describing or they are not confident in their reads.
You make it seem so easy, though you did say it's not. So, how does someone get better at this? Is field study the route?
And why, if it seems like Russell Wilson was running things well in Seattle, would he not be comfortable with such reads now? Perhaps he was relying more on the challenge to the defense of his running when he was in Seattle (and younger) and didn't fully learn how to read the whole field? So this larger viewpoint is something he still needs to learn at a level where it is automatic?
I also think your ability to do this and make it seem easy, is probably why you were so successful as a QB with more than one team. Hats off to you, Mr.Warner!! 🙂

If I had to guess, I bet Sean was really emphasizing that Russel needs to have the ball out of his hand within 3 seconds. Because he had a horrible tendency to hold it too long and get sacked. But now he is so focused on getting the ball out, he isn't noticing the open down field throw

It’s easy for Kurt to sit up in a film session and pretend that he would have made every correct decision, but Russ is a better QB than Kurt was. He’s the definition of a Monday morning QB.
Anyone can dissect the film. It’s another thing to process all of this while playing behind garbage for an O-Line and receivers who typically aren’t in their correct positions.
It isn’t that Russ isn’t confident in what he’s doing, as Kurt argues. It’s that Russ isn’t confident in his teammates!!!
His IQ is way higher than those of his teammates.
That offense sucks, and it sucks because there are only three real football players on it. Russ is one of the three, and the other two are RBs (Williams and McGlaughlin).

As a Seattle fan I’ve watched Russ for years. He is not a qb that takes a three step drop and throws on time unless it’s a boundary throw. He’s always been a QB that shifts around the pocket looking for a window to pass through…often with his head down. He needs boots and play action to be successful, as these give him space and time to see. This skill set is a difficult one to build an offense around and will drive west coast OC’s insane. Pete understood Russ’s weaknesses and strengths and built the offense around his quirky style. The game plan is pretty simple….get the run game going so you can establish play action and then let Russ run around and make plays in space. That’s really all there is. Along the way prepare yourself to be crushed on 3rd and short because the guy simply won’t throw a quick slant over the middle and instead will attempt to run around and then hurl the ball 20 yards to a double teamed receiver. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. That’s Russel Wilson.

you know were you are wrong? When the guy carries your entire offense with a bottom 27 o-line, leads his team in rushing yards, lead his team in rushing TDs, lead THE LEAGUE in TDs and do all that while accounting for 90% of total offensive production, he is an elite QB and carried your sorry franchise, Pete never builded anything around him, he took a 7-9 team to 11 wins the very next season, he was the reason for seattle success, that is the cold reality no "12s" have the decency to admit, it's all about the LOB this and that, but if i recall correctly, it was the LOB that gave up 2 TDs in the 4th quarter of that SB and forced Russ to make a play, he put them in a position to win, LOB gave them up.

  • @DeCurtaRican
    @DeCurtaRican ปีที่แล้ว +5

Kurt, Russ isn’t going to be comfortable in the pocket until his O-Line shows that they can consistently create and hold pockets!
I don’t blame Russ one bit. The guy has had sh!t blocking his whole career. The Broncos’ O-line did a decent job last Sunday, but they don’t have good receivers.
Russ has to be cursing the day he agreed to this trade. He made a huge…HUGE mistake by (1) leaving Seattle a year or two early, and by (2) choosing Denver.
If the parties could do it all over again, Russ doesn’t request the trade. Even if he does, Pete fights harder to work it out with him. And even if Pete doesn’t try to work it out, Seattle doesn’t take Denver’s call because Russ isn’t going there.
Maybe George Paton doesn’t make the call anyway, but his biggest mistake was hiring Hackett under the presumption that Hackett could lure Aaron Rodgers to Denver.
I knew Hackett would screw up when he spoke at his first post-trade presser…talking about his QB’s wife et al. What respectable coach does that? You see Payton hasn’t mentioned Ciara, and I doubt he has any desire to even be around her.

Russell Wilson's style has become a lot like Aaron Rodgers in recent years. He's become conservative with making risky throws that could cause interceptions. He's on the hot seat so I don't really blame him in a new system. Some of these throws Kurt says he should make seems more like that receiver wasn't his first read. Just like Aaron Rodgers missing the slant throw to Garrett Wilson before his injury.

Sean Payton wants Russell Wilson to play faster, he does not want Wilson to hold onto the ball. It's 1 2 3 get rid of it. 1 2 3 extend the play or run for a few yards. That is why it seems like he gets to his checkdown quickly at times. Yes he may miss a bigger opportunity down the field but Payton would rather take a profit and get into 2nd and 4 or 3rd and 1. These are valid critiques but I think Russell Wilson is doing mostly what he is asked to do.

  • @DeCurtaRican

Let me tell you how he gets more comfortable: the O-Line shows that it can do the job!!! The WRs need to run precise routes with speed every time, and the RBs cannot take plays off.
It’s not Russ. He knows what to do. He’s not completely comfortable because he’s playing with scrubs.
    It’s just that simple.
God! Why did he have to choose dumpster-fire Denver?! What a horrible choice…

    • @johnnyblazers

@@johnnyblazers : Yes, I saw that, and it was one game. Furthermore, let’s not exaggerate. Russ didn’t have all day to throw. That O-Line gave Russ enough time to do exactly what he did all day…check down…dink-and-dunk.
He didn’t have enough time to go deep. Denver’s receivers suck! They didn’t get quick separation, and that forced Russ to check down just to get the ball out.
I thought Sean Payton knew what he was doing, but I’m beginning to wonder now. He has to meet Russ in the middle and scheme those receivers open. Russ is a supreme deep-ball thrower…the best in the game actually.
If the receivers had gotten open quickly he would have hit them.
If Denver wants that, bring back Teddy Bridgewater, cut Russ a check and let him go find another team. If you all think no one will want him, you can let him go and find out the hard way.
There’s a coach out there who knows what to do with him. I low-key think the Seahawks would take him back. Geno is solid but he’s not Russ.

The problem is also vision lanes though, a lot of the things he should be seeing, he can't, because of how the pocket is forming and his height.
I don't think he'll ever look as comfortable as he did in seattle because they can't design the same offense... he isn't as fast, you can't rely on his wheels anymore, and he's just never been good at fundamental pocket qbing.

I don't see Denver beating many teams this year. maybe some later in the season, if Russ gets it together. So many Denver (Russ) fans will hate me for it but i just don't see how people think he is "fixed" after one game that he clearly didn't look that much better in.

The Key is , take him of the Field ! If social media and everything else is more important to a player than our beloved sport, he has no place on the field! In Seattle they are happy that they no longer have this guy and in Denver years from now they will be happy about it too!

  • @DeCurtaRican

    • @teamdinosaurs999

You are delusional if you think Russell Wilson is a better QB than Kurt was. Russell played in a system designed to give him game manager consistency, but his topside was nowhere near the elite pocket qbing that kurt warner could do.
You're comparing a 2x league mvp and a superbowl mvp, vs someone that's never earned a single mvp vote.

I think he looked a lot like he did last year (hence this years first game looking almost identical to last years first game) he's just getting good at making bad look better. Happy feet, missing reads, missed open opportunities down the field, checkdown after checkdown, etc. looks to me like the rest of the team is better coached so it helped give the appearance Russ was better. Kurt just exposed it in this video.

Btw, Kurt Warner is full of it!
Other analysts have said they were surprised at how great Russ’s footwork was last Sunday. Leave it to Mr. Know-it-all, Kurt Warner to be the one oddball who says something different.
The guy talks like he’s Tom Brady or Joe Montana. Warner was way overrated, IMO. He’s not even a top-20 QB all-time by the most generous rankings. Russ was already ranked #17 all-time after 2019. He’s better than Warner was. Why is he trying to tell Russ how to play?
