Shane, you da man!! I am such a newbie at automations. I have created some simple ones in the house involving three smart plugs. I mean BASIC! You’d laugh at how simple. But, emboldened by this podcast, I attempted one in CarPlay. One smart plug controls a coffee pot which is left on and this controlled by the plug. But, what if I drove off and left it on! Not good. Now, if that happens I get a text AND a spoken alert telling me “The coffee pot is on!” Just tested it and it works! I can hardly believe it. Thank you SO much!
I like the idea to check for open sensors! I’m definitely going to add that to my CarPlay automation. I currently have a very similar one that when I connect to CarPlay when I’m home, there’s a menu prompt asking if we should lock the house up or not. It also speaks the text “Welcome to Paige’s Palisade” in the Good News jingle right away. So that’s fun. 😅
Great video. Before retiring last year, my working hours were 8.45-5.15. I set up a CarPlay automation that plays a local radio station if it's between 8-10 for the drive to work, a different radio station for the drive home if the time was between 5-7. At all other times my favourite playlist on random. Apple changed something in an iOS update that broke it. Simple tweak to the time format fixed that. Just got a Nuki smart lock. Might try that unlock when CarPlay disconnects. Looking forward to part 2.
Thanks for sharing! I really like this idea. In the next video I'll show an automation that runs based on the time. I'd love to expand it more and change the music and other things throughout the day based on the time. Great stuff.
I had an automation that just opened Spotify and hit play when I connected to CarPlay. After I updated to iOS 17 it never worked again. I really don't know how to fix it.
These are awesome. (And the wife will love the front door unlocking. The Aqara U100 annoys her, even though a fingerprint is faster than keys she has a bad habit of starting to open the door immediately before the deadbolt is fully retracted. Lol. Pure impatience and user error, but this will fix that.) Would love a series on Shortcuts, I see there is far more potential than I’m aware of.
Keep the ideas for arrive/depart automations coming. I have my home set where when I reconnect to home wifi after 430pm, A-Lady will turn on my kitchen lights (closest room next to the garage) and play my Apple Music favorites mix.
Thanks so much! Still Learning! I have a new use case but to crack! Desired: Stop for Lunch and watch a streaming video (ie Paramount+) in my car. Manual Process: 1-Turn on iPhone Hotspot. 2-WiFi Connect iPad to iPhone. 3-Bluetooth Connect iPad to Infotainment System. Goal: Automate process through Shortcuts or Automations Is this possible? If so, any tips?
This is great. I set up one for my kids’ podcasts when I drive them to school (which was tricky to do). Except I do get errors, even though it did work.
Awesome ideas, and so simple! Like with those "door opens - turn on the light; door closes - turn off the light" Home automations. Easy and super helpful. I don't have Apple CarPlay, but I do have BT adapters in two cars I'm the primary driver of, so I just made one automation where when the iPhone is connected to any of these cars, the orientation lock on the phone is turned off (for better navigation), a playlist starts playing, media volume is set to a certain level (I'm not sure if the system remembers what it was last time I was connected to that BT), and Maps open. And then when the iPhone disconnects from either of these two cars the orientation lock turns back on and media volume is set to 0%. Seems to work but would need to test with the actual cars, especially the "when connected" because I think these BT adapters wake up as soon as the fob button unlocks the car, so will need to see if maybe I need to add a few seconds of wait before the media volume goes up.
Cool ideas for CarPlay! Didn’t know these were possible. FYI, you didn’t blur out your street name when you showed the unlock automation at the end like earlier in the video. 😮
I have great automation to check my calendar and see if I have appointment in next hour, if so navigates me to that appointment. And if I'm X miles away from home it'll navigate me home. It's amazing how useful that it. Problem is that SIRI 4 voice is sometimes choppy, wish apple would fix that.
Hoooboy! This is just the video I was looking for. New garage door opener is going in today and it would be great if I had a shortcut on the CarPlay screen.
Good news if you have a garage door opener that supports HomeKit... you don't need to set up anything for this to work. The garage door will automatically show up on the CarPlay screen when you are in the vehicle and within close range of your home.
@ShaneCreates Hey Shane! I’ve set up a navigate home automation when connected to CarPlay. How can I set it up to automatically navigate without having to manually tap on the “Go” button on the screen? Thanks for your time!
Thanks for all this. I learned a lot very quickly with your demo. I have a question though - when using Voice, it lets me select from a variety of weird voices, or Siri Voice 2. Is there a way to select the Siri voice I use for everything else - British (Voice 2)? Thanks!
Thanks for this, I added the carlplay one to check my august home lock, great suggestion, but had to take out the location check as it just took too long to run with that added (wonder if there's a away to check through the home app if it lists me at home or not)
My CarPlay plays ‘intro music’ when I enter the car. Then greets me according to the time of day. Then base of weather, it plays certain genres from Spotify (yes, got it working with Spotify) so if high chance of rain it plays ‘chilled’ music. Also looking to improve things so it considers time of year and time of day ( Christmas jams in the winter months and chilled out stuff late in the evenings). Anyway, I’ve got a dodgy cable, so there’s another shortcut inside that logs when I’ve last connected. If the time between two logs has been too short ~less that 20 mins, it either disconnected accidentally or I was only out for a while so it says ‘I’m back’ and continues my music and opens Google maps. It opens Google maps cause I’m always using it. Before I trip, I add my destination to the clipboard. When CarPlay connects it uses this to navigate. If the clipboard is empty and I’m x miles away from home around certain time of day ( assuming I’ve been out for a function or something) it will automatically navigate home. A bit verbose but I like it
Wow, thanks for sharing! I’ve done some of this, shared in the part 2 video (but still very basic compared to yours). I am excited to build upon these CarPlay shortcuts. What method are you using to integrate Spotify? Thanks for the inspiration!
Can you show how to do an automation when CarPlay connects it will give directions to work mon to Friday between certain hours and directions home between different hours please??
Awesome video Shane! Do you know if it possible to start different podcasts on different days when connected to CarPlay on different days ie traveling to work thru the work week?
Thanks Jason. Sure, it's possible. You can check what day of the week it is, then run certain actions based on that using IF actions. In the next video I'll show an automation that gets the current date/time, then runs actions based on the time. Doing this based on the DAY will be a similar process.
I have a homekit meross garage door opener, for months it showed up on my chevy infotainment screen using carplay and I could use it to open my garage door. About a month ago the icon that showed up in the carplay app on the infotainment screen would no longer operate. The app on my phone works fine but using carplay it no longer works. The icon still shows up on the infotainment screen but is inoperative. I've tried everything I can think of to fix it but cannot get it to work anymore. Any idea why or can you do a video on this? Thanks!
Hey Shane, great video. I’m not the best at creating automations, so I’m wondering if this idea I had in mind is even possible… my pre-teen kids are heavily involved in sports. I would like to play my kids “pump up playlist” when my phone connects to CarPlay but only on game days and when heading to their sporting events. Is there a way to sync our calendar with an automation to play their playlist, but only when heading to games? Does this make sense the way I’m trying to explain it? Love the videos and ideas. Appreciate it!
Hey thanks for watching! There should be some ways to do this. It is a little more advanced, but you can have a shortcut check your calendar (similar to how we checked for location in this video), then run an IF action to do things only if certain things are on the calendar. We'll dive a little deeper in the next video of this series. Hopefully it will give you some ideas and help in creating your perfect automation. 😃
Right, but for my knowledge that works only when you confirm on your screen. That’s how my works and that’s how I was guided by Apple. Sadly doesn’t works automatically when I’m in the range I selected. But maybe you know something I don’t know? Please share.
@@xarm2 yes, sorry that’s what I meant. The button shows up on my screen for me to open my garage door. I wouldn’t want it to open automatically as I may not be going home every time I’m near my house lol. Not sure if this makes sense
@@isaacvvasquezmakes perfect sense. I was just wondering if you knew the way to open without confirming on the screen. In the U.S Apple doesn’t want you to open automatically due to liability. I would like if that confirmation was on my car screen not my iPhone.
I’ve been using that similar automation for a couple years now with my CarPlay but I’ve run into a lot of issues. I tried to combine all the automation you showed into a single automation. That might be the source of my problem. What happens if you have several CarPlay automation that all start at the same time?
Hi Shane, great video! When I tried it on my CarPlay, I got a push notification saying that “Music Shortcut detected” and only when I pressed the “Play” button, the music actually started… Any idea on why it happened and how I can make the music start automatically without me needing to approve it? Thanks!

Great stuff, but has anyone tried opening Any App when CarPlay connects? It wants you to Unlock the phone unfortunately:/ which is not great because you’d probably have started driving already. I’ve not seen a way around this. I wish apple gave an option on automations to run without unlocking if set.

Do you have wireless CarPlay? If so do you find that it crashes in certain locations? There is something on some cell towers that causes it to crash every time you come near them. It’s not every tower, but the ones that do it, it happens every time. I’ve had this happen with multiple phones, different carriers and different vehicles. I’ve reached out to Apple, and they have no idea.
