In a community where carbon fiber, electronic shifting, marginal weight savings and power output have a huge influence, it’s nice to see bikes for us common people that just want to get around and have fun doing it!
I gotta say this made my day in many ways. :) You conveyed my thinking above in such beautiful way. :) Bikes come with multiple bells and whistles if you can afford them, but if you are just a regular person (like myself) and want to have a ride to work or around in the weekend, this is simply perfection.
I own 3 escapes. One w disc the other with rim brakes. The rim brakes work great. The escape is the best kept secret in the bike world. Throw some crosscut tires on it and you have a badass gravel bike.
Would you recommend it to a beginner? I want something nice to ride around my neighborhood that doesn’t have the rolling resistance of my old mountain bike
I saw this bike about a month ago at the shop, was impressed by it's appearance, was very surprised by the price. I have a similar bike I've been riding for 17 years and currently have 11,000 miles on it. While I replaced the oem wheels, (single wall), the bike has been very reliable and the caliper brakes are still on stock pads. The Giant punches way beyond it's weight, i'd buy one if I wasn't going upscale.
I rode it for 7 years before it got stolen in 2021. It's rear tire used to puncture a lot (every 500km). I replaced it with 35mm non-branded tire. The puncture problem got solved. But I was running different tire combination, 32mm at the front and 35mm at the back.
Bought the disc version of the Escape 3 almost three months ago for $590, before tax. Aside from the gearing being sluggish without some slight tuning, the bike is great value for money. The bike is great for the rainy weather in Florida, and it’s a great bike to customize to your needs. I’ve replaced the stock pedals with Race Face Ride pedals and the stock tires with Marathon Greenguards, so commuting has gotten more comfortable. All in all, handy bike.
Nice review/presentation of the Escape 3. I own the 2021 version which is identical apart from some parts spec. Mine came with Shimano Tourney and the terrible mega range freewheel. Terrible because the jump from 24 to 34 teeth is too large and throws you off when shifting to it. I will at some point change to a 14-28 freewheel as it makes more sense. Mine also lacked the decent looking ergonomic grips yours has, instead it had a pair of harsh feeling, almost plastic slip-ons. I replaced these immediately with Ergon GA3's and what a difference they made. Good to see that Giant upgraded on the next MY as well. The saddle was the surprise of the spec for me as I found it excellent from the first ride. It's cushy but not too soft, wide but not obstructive. A very neutral, fit-for-purpose item IMHO. The tyres roll fast and have pretty effective flat protection. They do slip on the wet though and after 6.000km they don't look worn, but have probably gone dry and are way more prone to tears from broken glass and other road debris. I plan to get a pair of 40 or 42mm Conti's to add some extra comfort and traction. I have added fenders, a rack and panniers on mine and use it to get to work and back daily (18-20km), plus groceries etc. As such it is often heavily loaded, but it remains easy to handle. Overall it's great VFM, a proper workhorse of a bike. It's great as a commuter, and proves that simplicity and cost effectiveness can go a long way. About the V-brakes, keep them adjusted, change pads when they're worn and they offer more braking power than the slick tyres can handle. I commute in all kinds of weather including heavy rain and brakes were never a problem, apart from some extra noise. I 100% recommend this bike if you are on a budget and need a versatile steed. I'm an avid mountain biker that's used to higher end components, but this one is perfect for the task/price.
Best starting bike for me!! A decent pseudo road bike for the price, and honestly my first love. MTB full time now, but this will take anything you throw at it
People moan about rim brakes . When I was growing up it was rim brakes or your foot on the rear tyre. Rim brakes are fine and easy to maintain. I’ve just ordered this bike because of its simplicity.
I've owned one since April of this year. The rim brakes work fine. It's relatively light and pretty fast. I own the blue ash version that's an extra large. It's the perfect bike for the amount of riding that I do.
I have the women's version of this bike (Liv Alight 3) and I LOVE it. It's been a great introduction into higher end bikes vs. the department store ones.
What's the difference with this one? I'm thinking of buying the XS version of the Escape 3 since I am 4'11". Originally was gonna buy Liv Alight 3 tho.
Been riding an escape 1 2011 model. Converted to single speed, 43mm panaracers, 50mm stem…. Its now at 21 lbs and a singletrack bomber! Fun geometry and forgiving to work on…
I just bought a like-new but used bike with mechanical disc brakes. I’m glad I didn’t pay brand new cost for this. I would look for rim brakes when buying new. Work as well for a lot less.
i have the disc, the frame ergonomics is amazing, i've ridden mountain bikes my whole life before now, and i was shocked over how light it was, its amazing.
I've had two different bicycle mechanics service one of my bicycles in front of me. They prefer the external cables. One of them was struggling to replace the cables. He went as far as talking about giving up, how he hates how internal cables are common now. It sure is fidgety.
Thank you for this concise review. I like the no-nonsense approach of this bike which promises longevity for a small price and allows me to upgrade the parts which are relevant for my own requirements (e.g. fenders, which I need in Vietnam).
I have an escape with disks.... got to be honest, I like rim brakes better. Disks just don't have the feel in my opinion. But man I love the bike. It is a beautiful frame and rides great!
@@faheemabdulla710 The escape 3. And by the way... the more I ride it the more I get used to the brakes. I would simply describe the mechanical disc's as being stiffer than regular side or center pull brakes. I feel like I have to apply more pressure to stop the giant than my Cannondale that doesn't have disks. But I guess I'll have to say that it stops fine.... just different. It's hard for me to describe. I love the bike though...I ride it every other week, switching up with my Cannondale.
Shimano tourney is smooth functioning in this bike? because tourney is a entry level gear and not smooth in other bikes. Why not provide altus or acera?
Nothing wrong with the bike, and upgrading the parts is cheap and easy. Put some high quality break pads instead of the cheap OEM ones and the break will work at least as well as an entry level disc brake.
Because the sirrus line was built by a factory in Taiwan which is owned by Giant. 90% of Specialized and Treks Bike is made by a Factory in Taiwan owned by Giant. Im pretty sure they get the Blue Print tweak it a bit and release it.
In my country Philippines this is not cheap bike, PHP58,000/$1000 Giant is a well-known Brand There's a lot of options out there like lightweight frame w/Shimano 105 group set for only 700$
I weigh 300 pounds but I’m looking for a fast, comfortable bike that can support me! I like this one but to the experienced guys, what are your thoughts?
@@faheemabdulla710 I ended up with a used 2010 Fuji track classic, it's a single speed /Fixed gear bike as I recognised that's all I need for commuting

V-brakes work perfect.
They work just as well as dual pivot side pull, if not better.

If rim brakes are good enough for the 60 to 70 mph descents in the Yorkshire dales and wolds and they are, so there good enough for anything !!!

Wonder why they freewheel? Unusual I think. Giant makes a good bike though. I have the Disc 1 Escape and it cam with Simano Alivio 9 speed cassette.

I found a used 2016 escape 3 at a LBS for 299 in great shape. The 2024 is 550. Is the 2024 model worth the extra 250?
Planning to buy this for a multi day touring with good climbs. Any suggestions?
majority would be fine with rim brakes but they're being offered less and less!
