This was exactly what I needed. I'm a guy who often tries to do stuff by myself, always had a father in law or big brother who knows nearby. So I'm a good assistant but not very good solo operator. Hi Tim- I l love your calm patient demeanor. You remind me of a friend of mine who was able to show me how to do some plumbing, electrical, and other handyman projects with a high degree of success. Unfortunately, he passed away a year ago. I miss him a great deal. While necessity is the mother of invention when it comes to repairs, including windows, sinks, faucets, etc. nothing compares to having a competent patient mentor which is exactly what you are. Ken
My 88 year old mom had that pin break off and she was pushing down the assembly and using tweezers to pry it back out because she was quoted almost $200. I'm glad I got to her first and found your clear, detailed instructions. I was going to wing it but there are vital tips here I never would have known. Great job...and my mom thanks you too.
Ppl crack me up, so plumbers are supposed to do this work for 100$$?? These aren't always easy, just because he makes it look easy because he's done it for yrs doesn't make it a quick simple fix. I'm not saying you shouldn't do it yourself but a licensed plumber has a bunch of expenses, tools, licensed and continued education invested into his/her craft! I respect ppl who attempt plumbing repairs on their own but more often then not it ends up costing them more and they still call us out. Similar to a mechanic

FIRST! Thanks, you nailed it! I had the unit in but didn't know that the lower pipe was not permanently fixed at the factory. Once I heard you (and seen) say it came apart that was it. Hi, Tim. Great video for those of us who aren't "real" plumbers. One thing I might suggest however, especially for first timers, is to replace those rubber seals on the P-trap. Perhaps I'm a bit of an overkill guy but when I'm repairing sink drains, I replace everything but the old PVC pipe and fittings. And in the for-what-it's-worth department, when I have anymore plumbing issues I'm not quite sure of, I'll be back to watch another one of your great videos!

Tim, thank you! I am the wife of the house plus the plumber, mechanic, and electrician. Oh, also the computer specialist. My husband just doesn’t get it. My dad was my teacher and helper. He is gone now. I needed to replace the pop up drain in one of our bathroom sinks. I have replaced them before as well as the faucets and the kitchen faucet. The drain kit came with nothing but the parts. I felt confident since I’d done it before. But just to be on the safe side I pulled up a couple videos. Didn’t like the first one and blast it a female gave the instructions! Then I watched yours. I still have the original plumber seal tube that my dad gave me. Couldn’t throw it away. So to be on the safe side I bought a tube of the Rector 5. Had everything assembled but kept finding a drip. Finally narrowed it down to wear the ball flipper ma-jig went to the back of the drain to raise and lower the stopper. I fussed, just sure I had done it right except the nut just didn’t tighten on very well. So I watched you one more time and realized I had inserted the 2 ring seals incorrectly. Fussed at myself some more, did it correctly and bingo no more drip!! So thanks for clear, easy instructions. I was in a hurry and too full of myself!!! But it’s done now. I really hate plumbing projects....lol

I'm sort of fearless when it comes to "fixing" things I know nothing about...but this video went straight to the point...in a clear and simple way. It all started with a clogged sink and i ended up replacing the entire drain system because the stopper nut in the back was cracked and I was not able to find a replacement ...and again....because if this video i took me about an hour to go thru the entire process..... Bless you, Tim. This video is exactly what I needed. I managed to change brake pads and rotors with a TH-cam video for guidance, so I should be able to do this too (knock on wood). As a single woman who is low on extra income, I've been having to wash my hands and face and brush my teeth in the kitchen sink for over a month with no hope of "plumber money" in sight. The metal gasket that smacks up to the underside of the basin BROKE (without anyone touching it) - how, I don't know, just fell apart one day. I don't have one of those "fancy" metal pipe assembly replacements, but years ago I replaced the faucet itself but not the drain. The drain part just got left in the box and tucked into a closet, just in case. I guess now is "case". It's plastic (bummer), but if it means no more trekking to the kitchen to brush my teeth, it will have to do. If I win the lottery, I'll call you to replace it. ;)

this was boss, thanks. My problem was omitting the plumber's putty and the 'gasket' parts sealing the leaks. Got too focused on the faucet replacement and made assumptions about the ease of the drain unit included in the faucet. Excellent overview!

Tim, thanks for such detail, even though I wasn't replacing anything; your descriptions helped me figure out how to remove my stopper so I could clean alllllllll the nasty stuff under it that was slowing the drain without chemicals.
Great DIY step by step, thank you much. As feedback, I found that I needed to use the old rubber seal/washer under the drain/sink, glad I still had it around. Also, it was fun to watch the plumber's putty squish out from the drain rim as I tightened the nut below. I guess I did it right, it didn't leak!

Thank you for the step-by-step. the guy who installed our pop-up did not put the pivot rod in the lift rod hole or the spring clip. It just never worked and we just bought a new one. Yes, the little rod inside was gone due to rust. I am going to be installing it correctly from your instructions. (Although you got lucky. Ours did not drain well and had nasty smelly hair in the pipes. Thanks to my Dewalt drill and the snake drain cleaner that did not take long to clear it. I suggest a mask and gloves for that job.) I bought the Dewalt and snake for the kitchen sink pipes I was prepared for the nasty stuff. After replacing the Kitchen sink, facet and pipes this looks like a breeze. Thank you again for this video. Saving me money since I do not have a job and my sister and I are living off her income of 28K a year.
Thanks for the tip regarding the reciprocating saw to cut off the pipe if you can’t get the nut off. I watched your video before I started the job, and I instantly knew what to do when I hit a snag. I’ve found that a Sawzall, Dremel tool or cutoff tool is sometimes the most important tool in my arsenal.

I'm really into putting in pop ups for my job now and this video was very informative. I def learned something about that washer on the ball rod. I dont think anyone uses those lol...and good tip about starting the ball rod in the open position and putting it in the plumbing strap...you have a way with making videos...very smart!

Also, it was fun to watch the plumber's putty squish out from the drain rim as I tightened the nut below. I guess I did it right, it didn't leak!

I was surprised that the putty didn't ooze out of the top as well.

Thank you for the step-by-step. the guy who installed our pop-up did not put the pivot rod in the lift rod hole or the spring clip. It just never worked and we just bought a new one. Yes, the little rod inside was gone due to rust. I am going to be installing it correctly from your instructions. (Although you got lucky. Ours did not drain well and had nasty smelly hair in the pipes. Thanks to my Dewalt drill and the snake drain cleaner that did not take long to clear it. I suggest a mask and gloves for that job.) I bought the Dewalt and snake for the kitchen sink pipes I was prepared for the nasty stuff. After replacing the Kitchen sink, facet and pipes this looks like a breeze. Thank you again for this video. Saving me money since I do not have a job and my sister and I are living off her income of 28K a year.

Thanks for the tip regarding the reciprocating saw to cut off the pipe if you can’t get the nut off. I watched your video before I started the job, and I instantly knew what to do when I hit a snag. I’ve found that a Sawzall, Dremel tool or cutoff tool is sometimes the most important tool in my arsenal.
Well done! I am a DIY but in my late 70's I am reluctantly accepting my limitations. I will hire a plumber, but I now understand what it involves. I agree with the comment on background music. Husband was talking to our son and basketball was on TV. You explained it very well. Thanks!

Thank you thank you! I fixed my sink because of this tutorial. You are very clear and precise. I had to Dremel off the brass nut under the sink, but everything else went like clockwork.

I'm really into putting in pop ups for my job now and this video was very informative. I def learned something about that washer on the ball rod. I dont think anyone uses those lol...and good tip about starting the ball rod in the open position and putting it in the plumbing strap...you have a way with making videos...very smart!
