The music at the end is so beautiful. I feel like I've heard it before, or something very similar. It sounds like a very classic piece of music, and I love how Ivan says he's happy for Vassilissa to return as a frog, so long as he can have her in his life ♡

I really love that Baba yaga's charactereristic. She's cunning, evil, dangerous, but she also gladly helps our main character in need for her sake.

What a beautiful film! In the folktale, the prince is always ready to shoot the wildlife because he is afraid of them, but he refrains from killing them when he hears them beg for their lives. It is a common element in fairy tales. The magic fish in the Grimm's fairy tale, "The Fisherman's Wife."
This film was so wonderfully animated in traditional cel animation. So much artistry and work went into this production. There is a wonderful book, "The Frog Princess," illustrated by the Russian illustrator, Grennady Spirin. His work is truly spectacular, done in watercolors.

Gennady Spirin I think...I remember seeing some of his work in a gallery in Princeton years ago with our daughter when she was still a little girl. He is amazing. She grew up to be an artist illustrator too! Great Illustration does not get it's due in the art world I think. It is a combination of several gifts. I am an artist but I do not 'illustrate'. But watching my daughter create worlds in her art completely from her imagination and observation of the real world, I am amazed. So a stunning artist combined with an amazing imagination and a poets understanding of the literature...pure genius.

How wonderful that your daughter is an illustrator! You sound like you are very proud of her.
It would be fantastic to see Spirin's work in person. I am sure that the printed illustrations look different from the originals.
I agree that Gennady Spirin is definitely a genius! The photo of him on Bing makes him look like a fairy tale character!
May you and your daughter enjoy many years together in good health, prosperity and joy!
      Best wishes,
      Dianna

Thank you Dianna. I thought you would like the illustrations. There were only a few pieces in the gallery that was there at that time and I am not sure still is. But we knew who he was because of the Chrildren's books. It has been an eye opener to see the true gift of illustration.

You may want to check out Pinterest for fairy tale illustrations. There are some amazing illustrators from the 19th and early 20th centuries. One of my favorites is N.C. Wyeth. Dover books has many books with illustrators. Have fun checking them out!! Have a good week!

Another illustrator you'll love is Arthur Rackham. Just brilliant! Whether he uses pen and ink or watercolors, his work is always remarkable.

Just wanna take a moment to appreciate the old man for calling out the prince for taking Vasalisa’s frog skin and burning it. Like, yea dude, why are you burning your wife’s stuff? This fairytale going to easy on you, had to add a few more obstacles?

That's some dub change when Ivan talks to Baba Yaga... the original had him asking why she doesn't offer him a dinner before asking questions. And not in the most respectful tone, BTW.

You know, people need to give Ivan a bit of a brake here at least in this part. He could have easily not listen to the animals. And he immediately set out to save Vasalissa (sp?) immediately without any provisions.

Ivan is running around trying to shoot animals instead of focusing on following the twig. "Thank you for your kindness" he shouldn't be aiming at them in the first place.

      Hilary, you are NOT alone.
I too remember the version you're talking about. In fact, I wish that one was available as well.
What probably happened was two different distributors purchased the American distribution rights to this film. It happens occasionally, particularly if a foreign film has several owners. A case of where one hand doesn't know what the other is doing.
Anyway, as you said, the princess' name in that American translation is Marilinda. I also recall that the sorcerer's name as Kogart.
The distributors of this version decided to change things around a bit. The animation is the same, of course, but they started with the king ordering his sons to find brides, with Ivan's arrow falling at the feet of the frog and marrying her. He has to deal with the derision from the court and his father for his actions, until Marilinda shows up in human form at the feast, and explains how she was transformed into frog by Kogart. The scenes where Marilinda is abducted - which are at the beginning of the version provided by Karla Wong - were placed here in the version we remember. I actually like it better, because it gave the story an air of mystery.
However, one scene that had to be cut was Marilinda singing and creating the rug - because that would have given things away. Instead, all we see is Marlinda as a frog presenting the rug to Ivan. You know the rest.
The voices and dialog were different. Much of the story was provided by an unseen narrator. Another reason I like this version better is because I think the actors took themselves a bit more seriously, and those person who wrote the dialog did not make it as stilted.
If anyone knows where you can find a copy of the alternative English version, I'd be very interested in buying it.
      Hope this helps.

There was a better dubbing that used the original sound track mostly. It was cut up into serial form and shown as cartoon shorts on childrens TV shows in Chicago when I was a child.

Hi there. I remember that version too! (We must be about the same age.) This version, if I recall, used a narrator, and I think the voices were better. It also was more of a mystery in the beginning, because it started with the prince and his brothers being ordered by their father the king to find brides for themselves. They shot arrows, and the prince had to marry the frog because the arrow landed at her feet. It was only later in the story that she was revealed to be an enchanted princess. The names were also different as well. As I recall, the princess was called "Merilynda," the prince was named "Dorian," and the old sorcerer was "Korgart." I'd love it if someone could post that version.

one question that rises is what is the price of gold? - it does have majestic power - however, one should also be creative with all the other things in life. How to treat beauty - is something would should respect, but not get cared away with because it tends to weaken the mind - when we miss the beauty of our ears and of our imagination then life gets dull!
