    Here in Sweden the .308 Win is dominating the market. About 8 out off 10 new hunting rifles is a 308.
    It used to be 6,5x55 and 30-06 with some .300 Win Mag. Manny of them now sits in a Gun Store with a discount sticker on them.
    The .308 Win hits the sweet spot effect/recoil/hunting laws/general hunting distance here in Sweden.
    That said, some people are starting to lock at the more heavy hitting rounds for the wild boars hunts.

    One more pro of the 308 Winchester is it doesn’t burn out barrels like a lot of other cartridges can do. Owning a heavy barrel bolt action, for me the recoil is mild. Unlike my 7MM Rem Mag.

    I loved my FN C1A1 in 7.62x51 NATO when I was in the army. Because of that, I have owned a Savage 99 and a Tikka T3, both in .308. They have put a lot of venison on the table over the years. My favourite is the 150 grain because the flat trajectory is great for long range shots, and the mass is sufficient to bring down the largest bucks with a single shot. I know guys who have used it for moose even. Great round.

    I have owned all the .30 cals that you have mentioned and in my experience the 308 does everything the larger rounds do at sensible hunting ranges (350m) with less recoil and less powder if you reload. It’s knocking on the 30-06 door up to 165grain weight and is only down a couple of hundred fps with the 180 grain projectiles. Good video Ozzie.

    • @snowboxesful
      @snowboxesful 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are also more accurate then the 30-06, because the cartridge or powder stack it too long to burn reliably. .300 win mag is wider and tapered nicely, but unless you want to change the barrel like brake pads well....

    Here in Norway we hunt at short to medium distances and many likes our rifles with shorter barrels because we put silencers on. Then the recoils drops. The 308 burn all the gasses and one can cut the barrel shorter than the other like 6,5, 3006 etc.

    • @TheZaru

      yeah also depends on the rifle, if you build a heavy target rifle its going to be way less recoil than a light weight hunting rifle

  • @skay9443
    @skay9443 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    It's really interesting about the recoil side of things. I've only recently picked up and started shooting a .308 and I don't find the recoil severe or painful. It's louder and produces more concussion, but I don't believe it's really that bad. I was, frankly, a little scared to shoot it off the first time owing to it's reputation, but it was not bad at all. More of a shove, less of a concussion. For example, this weekend I shot off around 15 rounds with the .308 and a dozen with the .223 and I didn't feel any ill effects. If anything I'd liken it to shooting a 12-gauge.
    I was shooting 150-160 grain bullets, so I wonder if that might be why it wasn't so bad?

    • @nothere9551
      @nothere9551 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I am pretty recoil sensitive, but 308 is a nice round for mine, top end of my shooting but it will drop almost everything in Oz.

    • @PilotMcbride
      @PilotMcbride 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Had a bit of experience with the 308 & 7.62 NATO, and as you say, generally they aren’t all that bad, but in the shorter barrel rifles they can worry newer shooters as the muzzle blast tends to add a bit of mongrel to their performance.
      Back in the 70s I had a chance to test fire a Bren which was rebarrelled from 303 to 7.62N, and, well, all I can say is WOW!! No discernible recoil, it was taken up by the reloading. The only thing wrong with it was changing mags every 30 rounds. And it was pretty darned accurate as well, the 300yd pattern (still a nice elliptical pattern), wasn’t all over the place as with the M60.

    • @ColdWarWarriors
      @ColdWarWarriors 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@PilotMcbride The length of barrel has a big effect on recoil, I own several .308's of different barrel length and the difference in recoil is quite apparent, from a short barrelled 18 inch Gun Site Scout rifle, (heavier recoil). to a 24 inch barrelled target rifle (mild recoil).

      I have a 26 inch heavy barrel on my 308 and regularly put up to 100 rounds through it at the range off a bench, usually with heavier projectiles. I am also recoil sensitive but don't find it heavy on recoil. My rifle is not a light weight hunting rig though.
