    Things I've found out:
    - Do at least a baseline for your hair first.
    - Always reset facial pose before working on a face and imagine its idle look.
    - Working with a reference is easier.
    - Always look from the front and from the side when changing stuff.
    - Start by picking out all the features without going into big or small edits. You still have 2 sliders available (shape and detail), and they can be very helpful. For instance, if the default face you picked had a jaw which is just a bit too round for you, pick a strong square jaw, and drag the shape slider way down. The main goal here is to get a general idea.
    - When going for finer edits, do the group eyes/nose/mouth first, then brows, then the rest.
    - Face length can be a very useful tool. Forehead and cranium proportions can really change how a hairstyle looks and give a flat haircut a lot of volume.
    - The one thing in facial pose that really adds something is the lower eyelid blink slider. The rest should really mostly be used for posing, you should be having the face you wanted to achieve already when you get there.
    - You don't need to edit everything. Having some sliders at 0 is fine.

    My biggest struggle is the face posing. I feel like the defaults are either too subtle or too over the top, and the individual sliders I just can’t make work well. Smiles are especially cursed looking.

    • @Siansonea
      @Siansonea ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Corner Dimpler/Pusher is the key to natural looking smiles, and making them asymmetrical, I find. Unlink the sides, get the width and Puller/Depressor the way you want it, then work on Dimpler/Pusher, and then start fine-tuning the PuckerPresser and FunnelerRoll settings.

    To be honest, I hope they make a full-body customizer one day that works similarly to the new face customizer. I can imagine that by the time they attempt that, sky castle studios/heroforge themselves will have a good idea of how things will work/how to make them work, and hopefully the people will be used to face customizer by then and can appreciate full-body customizer more.

    Seeing as we have a bunch of default faces to choose from, I think its fine. People who don't want to put the work in can use those and have tons of options to choose from. They can also switch out the parts without touching the slider.
    One important point to note for anyone looking to learn this is that the face parts look different based on which base face you choose. They act as modifier presets not modular parts.
    Anyhow, I love this update so much! Time consuming but incredible. And as a fan of a lot of scifi settings, having a way to make weird but specific alien faces is a god send.

I know that myself and some others that I've talked to feel the same and that the faces feel uncanny and hard to work with at times. But that over all this is a good change and my favorite part is the ear posing.

  • @Siansonea

    There are a few glaring omissions from this set of customization options:
    • *Ears.* We need to be able to customize the ears. The options we currently have are weak. They need to be just as customizable as the rest of the features. *EDIT:* I have found that ear "posing" is available in the Advanced tab of the Pose menu, which gives a lot of customization options. I kind of feel like this should be under the Face tab at least, and probably in the Head > Ears or Head > Face tab or at the very least the Pose > Face tab. By the same token, the Teeth posing feels like it should not be considered 'posing' but rather customization options under the Head > Teeth tab.
    • *Eye distance.* We need to be able to bring the eyes closer together or further apart. If there is a control for that, I haven't found it.
    • *Overbite/weak chin.* We have an Underbite option, but I would like the ability to move the entire jaw backward to create an overbite appearance.
    • *Eyebrow customization.* The new eyebrows are great, but we're not there yet. I'd like to be able to customize the shapes themselves, not just the area underneath them. Also, I would like eyebrow options that are just face decals in the Color menu, for characters where a big molded brow doesn't necessarily make sense. Bonus points if those decals can be layered under the brow shapes to soften the transition between the brows and the face.
    • *Hairline decals.* We need decals that will allow the user to give characters 'edges' along the hairline, to soften the transition between the face and the hairstyle shapes.
    • *Hair "horns".* We should be able to use the Horns slots to add clumps of hair to customize the existing hairstyles.

  • @marinacatica
    @marinacatica ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been trying it out myself and I must say that the easiest way to begin is to pick out a face that's already similar to your goal, and if you want to change, say, the nose, pick a different one and play with the sliders that adjust the amount of change for both texture and shape, to reduce them to your liking and achieve a middle point.
    It's easier to keep the face balanced that way (at least with the style original ones as ref) than if you change too many facial features on full intensity, which can make the traits look disconnected really fast.
    Besides that, adjusting some of the sliders of the first tab is a good idea, but go slowly and make small changes gradually so it doesn't get out of hand. Some visual ref from different angles, specially for more realistic faces, is always handy

  • @jonathanrandom-games

    It's a relief to hear that I'm not the only one struggling. There's just SO MANY options. In the Face posing too. It kinda makes me long for the days of Less Mad More Mad sliders. XD

  • @VaderViktor
    @VaderViktor ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I fully agree. My main problem with the face customizer is that it is far easier to create a goofy thing than create a nice face. Im not entirely sure how they could remedy this exactly. I believe that people will adapt to the big edits and small edits of the actual customizer, but perhaps finding a middle ground in the posing between the way it is now and the sliders that were there before could be a great benefit to those who are confused by the new system.

    I think it’s interesting seeing the communities reaction to this beta, as someone who rarely puts faces on my minis, (or if I do I cover them up with a helmet 😂) I don’t feel nearly as burnt out or overwhelmed as some other people I’ve spoken to have expressed.
    I feel low-key blessed ngl, I can definitely see how for a person who always puts faces on their minis or recreates existing characters it would be whole lot more mandatory work and time per mini and could turn you away.
    I’d 100% agree that heroforge could benefit from making the UI simpler but I’m also hoping people adapt to the new system over time, just over the past week I don’t think I’ve seen a boring or “soulless” mini. Each one has so much personality and character and it’s refreshing seeing minis look so unique, I also feel like it’s way easier for beginners to make their minis stand out from the crowd now which is awesome, honestly can’t wait until the public get this 🙏

    I really like the face customization, and i'm very glad we can make characters of color that actually look like people of color now rather than being restricted to so few options, however, trying to make good expressions is genuinely horrible. I hope they bring back the old expression sliders, as i think they are definitely a good starting point, and then after using the sliders letting users choose to further customize the expression after they got the basic starting point. Also I think it's kinda funny that originally, making a closed mouth smile was really difficult, and now, making a smile that shows the teeth is pretty difficult.

    I dont want to sound ungrateful, but there are a few features Im surprised aren't in yet(?).
    Featureless features.
    Moving eyes closer and further from eachother.
    Moving the mouth up and down.
    Almost every face is now possible, however the fact that there's so much possibility, that not having these main three things get in my way when making a character. I am very specific about how my faces look, and when the eyes aren't closer enough together for a certain face it will just always be incomplete. Plus I've had one specific face I've been trying to make since I started heroforge and I still cant do it, its like inches away from me, man.

  • @drauncj
    @drauncj ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It must be said; with this degree of customization and detail on such a miniature scale, it makes even LESS sense that we would lose the hand pose glitch (and not get the more expressive hand poses) for the argument that they won't print well. There is no point to making a custom face this nuanced if the goal is to print it. Oh I'm so pissed about the hands.

    • @bashermus9975
      @bashermus9975 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the improvement of the hands, I'd first like to see the option to change the size of the hands. Currently hands are too small for giant/trolls/etc. and too big for females and children.

    • @drauncj
      @drauncj ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bashermus9975 Children! That's interesting. I would never dream of trying to make a child character in HeroForge; there's nothing even close to childlike, far as I can see. But yes, hand size would be great, but to me, it isn't even on the list of top priorities. Hands are the second-most expressive part of the body. They've given us full control over the very most while taking away control over the second-most. A trade-off we surely didn't ask for.

    Might just be me, but I had a lot of difficulty with the tusks on my half-orc. When it transferred over I had to bend over backward to have the tusks outside of the mouth and not clipping through his face/lips, and then if you want to use a default facial pose you have to manually adjust the mouth again to fix the tusk clipping. This new system seems amazing, but definitely not newbie friendly :')

    I'm getting more an more used to it as the days go on. I've mostly been focusing on making kid faces so far. The general consensus in the Discord is that Sky Castle should add in a "Basic" mode that's a bit more simplified and closer to the old system and then call the current system the "Advanced System" That way there is a simpler system for those that don't want to get into the weeds of the complex new system and can just create basic faces. Something like that would also allow people to start with a base that's close to what they want and then go into the advanced mode to make small tweaks to perfect it. I personally am loving all the new options more and more so I really hope they don't remove anything in favor of simplifying things, I think the best compromise is to add in a basic option to complement the more advanced system

    honestly with how there's bases for faces and the simpler sliders, i don't see it as a big problem, not saying you ARE nitpicking, but I'm saying that saying how advanced it is can cause issues is kind of nitpicking compared to the alternatives that can fix that, so comparatively (excuse my constant use of that term) I'd say its the smallest issue, right under bugs, to the face customizer, i think it'll just take some time to get used to

  • @bashermus9975
    @bashermus9975 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have already made quite a few characters with the new FC, and I love it.
    Yes, it can be a bit daunting at the beginning, but the faces have never looked better on my figures; realistic looking characters, different old men, creepy looking strangers, very pretty girls, scarily photo-realistic orcs (that almost look as if they are really seeing you), etc.
    For me the way to tackle it and keep it fairly simple (and start with a neutral expression):
    -Select the head that looks closest to what you want
    -Change the different parts (nose, mouth, cheeks) and use the amount-slider (that way you can get something in between the selected head and the newly selected part)
    -Start finetuning from there.
    For me, it always starts with the eyes.
    The biggest drawback for me is that a lot of the older clothes and gear (and the Warg) look too cartoony combined with the new faces.

    No pro, hopefully we can make some "UwU" kawaii desu faces as the current base faces are quite generic american cartoony and I don't like putting dark shades to make less plastic, but accidently look dark souls edgy for happy wolf girl I posted in your discord server lmao

      Yeah I find it hard to replicate more feminine faces or just soft looking characters in general
