One thing I do like is that the CoG, by design, has some uncomfortably fascist elements, both before and after E-day . . . But at the same time the narrative derides it heavily. Most of the CoGs soldiers know that the leadership is completely full of shit and nobody is fighting for any sense of nationalism or ideological identity any longer, just to hold on and protect whoever is left. I mean, it's not a big thing, but the ship that arrives at the end of GoW 3, acting as a landing ship to deliver CoG reinforcements, is actually crewed by survivors from another nation. In the first Gears novel, Myrrah also said "Humans are blind to the threat right before their eyes. We could have asked for their aid, but they only know dominance."
