What on earth is this thing about Amelia intending to suffocate her husband (during the introduction of the aria) ????? Amelia is the epitome of sense of duty !!!
By the way, in my humble opinion Ms Harteros' voice seems to be slightly too light for this part...
Toscarpia Hers is a dark lyric and the role is for a dramatic or maybe a spinto.

It takes an IQ of not even 100 to understand what the director wants to tell us. But many opera fans can be extremely ignorant about the fact that opera is THEATRE and not a CD with images in the listener´s head.
@@Altonahh10 I don't believe that the original poster is saying that they don't understand; but that it doesn't fit with who the character of Amelia is. She is desperate to remain committed to her vows and not give in to her passion for Riccardo/Gustavo. I think that it would be more in character for her to contemplate killing Riccardo/Gustavo than her husband.

In Maschera, de Verdi, tem a revelação tétrica:

Harteros is able to pass the high C test although one feels that it is not entirely comfortable. There are a number of clips of this aria on YT Most are undone to varying degrees; even Welistch falters but not in the manner of Caniglia in the complete recording where she literally explodes. The best IMO is Tomowa-Sintow who ascends to the note and sings it with resonance and beauty. Harteros is a spinto--certainly not a lyric. Immensely versatile she can range from Mozart and Strauss to Verdi, much in the manner of Julia Varady. Munich is the home of many productions that will upset, sometimes for obvious reasons. I will admit taken out of context this scene makes no sense since she is supposed to be searching for an herb that will quell her passion for Ricardo; I seriously doubt that she will be lucky given setting of a bedroom in what looks like a palatial residence.
Jemanden sollte mir erklären diesen phenomen von Harteros. Die stimme wird immer wenig schön, Uberhaupt nicht Italienisch umso wenig für diesen repertoire. Bitte.
Give her Arabella, Marschallin or Elsa instead...

Those were all less than great in this aria. Callas was the the best, and a close 2nd place goes to ANNA TOMOWA-SINTOW (look up the live performance).
