@@reactswithjaxPart of the reason that it kind of started where it did was because they weren’t quite sure how well these movies were going to do. This is long before big budgets and the CGI was just finally getting good enough to actually make a movie like this and it halfway be believable. Marvel had filed bankruptcy because of expensive paper, comics not selling as well, aging fans and younger kids only knowing the comics, etc. They planned on making 3 movies and if you watch the commentary on the original DVD’s, they say that they all signed a 3 movie contract but they weren’t sure if they’d even make it that far. They tried to choose the best storyline they could that they could introduce enough to get people to watch another movie, but that was as true as they could “kind of keep it” to the comics.

In the comics, her powers get WAY more interesting later in the comics because she has much more control of them, and can even sort of telepathically absorb mutant powers without touch if she’s close enough. To answer a question, yes, she can absorb more than one person’s power at the same time. Something else that happens aside from absorbing personality traits is that she does absorb some memories and especially trauma and painful memories that people have been through.

Yes, the mutant/human tension is a massive feature in the comics. The entire concept of mutants is an allegory for any discriminated against people group.
In the MCU, they created the Sokovia Accords to mimic the Mutant Registration Act, but they didn’t have the rights to mutants or the X-Men at the time.

    • @JakkFrost1
      @JakkFrost1 หลายเดือนก่อน

The Sokovia Accords were a take on the _SuperHuman_ Registration Act (SHRA) from the comics Civil War event, hence them being introduced in the movie Captain America: Civil War.
Of course in the comics the SHRA was based on the same legal framework as the MRA, but the MCU's Sokovia Accords are not based (directly) on the MRA.

In the comics, Chris Claremont's "The Dark Phoenix Saga" (which was 'mined' to create the Jean/Phoenix portion of this story) stands as one of the great achievements in the genre. It took nearly a year of issues to tell, and "The Last Stand" is one of several attempts to film it. In the movie, Jean shows enormous power because in the comics, she was essentially power incarnate. The Phoenix Force, which merged with Jean at the moment of her physical death (because comics), was revealed to be one of the fundamental entities of the Marvel universe, and the story of it's possession of Jean is told against a galactic backdrop.
In the comics, Jean's dark side was fanned by a telepathic villain, who encouraged her to give in to the Phoenix's darker impulses. Jean gave herself over to the entity more and more, until finally, one night Jean/Phoenix flew to the D'bari star system and consumed it's star, wiping out the D'bari civilization on one of it's planets. This did not go unnoticed by the interstellar powers that be, and the Shi'ar Empire determined she was too dangerous to be allowed to live. They sent a task force to Earth to destroy the Phoenix. The X-Men fought to defend their friend, but in the end Jean could not live with what the Phoenix had done through her, and she chose to take her own life. She died in Scott's arms, who was at that time both her lover, and also not dead.
While "The Last Stand" isn't a terrible movie in and of itself, in comparison to the source material, it pales.

    • @SirKolass

This franchise is also inconsistent, because Jean had the phoenix force in the second movie, then all of a sudden it's a split personality.

The first bit with Logan and the team is in the Danger Room, a holographic simulation training facility. The big robot head was from a Sentinel, a classic comic antagonist; they're robots built to hunt down and destroy mutants and are damn near unstoppable. And oh yes, the move that Colossus pulls where he chucks Wolverine at a target is called the "Fastball Special" :D
In the comics, Warren Worthington III, aka Angel, was one of the founding members of the X-Men, so it was cool to see him here even in a diminished capacity. He ends up in a devil's bargain with Apocalypse much later on. Also Pyro has to wear a fuel tank on his back with his little hand pilot lights so he can use his powers.
Also in the comics, the Phoenix Force is a fundamental part of the Multiverse, the focus of all psionic power and the spark of life that caused all universes to spring into being. It is the creator and destroyer of life, much like Lord Shiva from Hindu myth, and is a creature of pure passion and emotion. Jean Grey's part in its tale comes when she is dying in a space shuttle incident and her mind calls out for help, and the Phoenix responds, having previously taken note of her powerful abilities after she nearly died trying to keep one of her friends from crossing over.
And again, the Phoenix is passion personified, reason is not a factor when dealing with it, but the mortals it bonds to can exert their will and choose to prevent destruction rather than cause it. Also fire. Lots of fire. :P
Multiple Man is also a LOT more dangerous in the comics than shown here, where he's kind of just a comical macguffin to keep the story going. He can create a duplicate when his body interacts with kinetic energy. He used to be unable to control it, so if he got slapped or something he'd duplicate. Now he can intentionally snap his fingers or tap his foot to do so. Each dupe is it's own person, starting with his memories, but creating their own as they are apart from him, and he ("The Prime") can reabsorb them at will and gain their memories as his own. They can also create their own dupes, but are limited (kind of like making a copy of a copy of a copy). He can also kill someone instantly by putting his hand in their mouth and creating a dupe inside them, exploding from the inside :P
Finally, remember that lecture Charles was giving on the ethics of transferring a conscious mind into that of a brain-dead person's? The patient was his twin brother who, while in the womb, had his consciousness absorbed by Charles' latent telepathic powers, he sort of just overwhelmed his brain unintentionally. In the end-credits scene, he speaks because when Charles was blasted apart by the Phoenix, he transferred his mind to his brother, so he's technically still alive.

This was the highest grossing X-Men film for 8 years.
Yet it's considered one of the most decisive comic book movies.
Brett Ratner replacing Bryan Singer as director was because Singer bowed out to do 'Superman Returns' (strange choice to some).
This one moved a little quicker than the first 2 films and upped the action (a la' video games and animated series).
Between Jean becoming the Phoenix, this new cure being made and Magneto staging a final attack to tip the balance did make for some goodness.
So much was cut from the film as the alternate versions of some scenes and deleted scenes are actually pretty cool.
Most of us following the franchise knew that this was the end for the moment.
Fox wasn't done and more X-movies were coming.
But last and not least, X3 did another milestone as the first-ever Marvel movie with a post-credits scene.

Still sad that Cyclop was killed off for behind the scenes reasons. It was consequence of the studio's displeasure with James Marsden, punishing him for working on another film simultaneously. Cyclops has never been done justice in the films but this film could've been a redemption arc for his character who gains strength from his hurt and takes up the mantle as team leader. The virtual reality danger room in this film was originally going to be built by Scott as a way for him to better himself but also the X-Men. Scott also just plays a massive part in the Dark Phoenix story the inspiration behind this film.
Thankfully X-Men 97 did massive justice to Scott as a character, so many people only know Cyclops from the X-Men films and understandably right him off as a pretty lame character. So when X-Men 97 came along these people were shocked at how interesting and badass he is in the show. Cyclops can carry a whole franchise and if the MCU wanted to they could easily make him the new Iron Man of the MCU whenever we do venture into the Mutant Saga somewhere down the line. Cast an amazing actor who is backed by solid writing and character develop and we'll have some amazing new face of the MCU. Cyclop is very much a boy scout kind of character in the vein of Superman of Captain America.
Basically X-Men 97 should be the template for a MCU X-Men films and we'll be eating good.

The conflict between humans and mutants is the central story of the comics. That “cure” wasn’t made to help people that didn’t want their powers. It was made to wipe out mutants because of fear and bigotry. It was the worst thing they could do to Mystique, they stole her abilities, her identity, violated her body and took away her choice and they want to do it to all mutants. Basically genocide. That’s the entire point of the X-Men stories. It’s an allegory for marginalized people and bigotry originally created at the peak of the civil rights movement in 1963. So, no, people in the Marvel universe generally would not want to become mutants.
And Kitty is short for Catherine.

Fun Fact: Bobby (Iceman) is also an omega level mutant ie class 5 mutant same class as jean grey. He is very strong, he can be alive as living ice and can also exist in vapor or liquid form and is nearly unkillable.
Later storm and magneto were also added to the list, although mostly they have been near omega level (in movie lingo ~ level 4.5). There only a very few omega level mutants ie < 20 and most of them are telekinetic and telepathic so it's fun to see iceman as omega level considering people would think why would a person who just forms ice be one of the most powerful mutants.

Stan Lee who was the idea guy at Marvel had no problem coming up with names or powers... he had Jack Kirby and the other artists at Marvel create the designs...the biggest pain was coming up with an origin for their powers or abilities. Kitty Pryde has the potential to be a full density shifter, like Vision. In one continuity, she pulls a Queen Maeve on an armored transport carrying Spider-Man, who she was dating at the time. They thought they were going to run over her. Nope. She turned it into scrap.
This was before she led a mutant revolution against the United States government.
This isn’t the main continuity, but in the case of everyone except Captain America, Ant-Man, the Wasp, the Hulk, and Mr Fantastic, it includes some of my favorite versions of the various Marvel characters, particularly those associated with Spider-Man.
A continuity that technically no longer exists, both in a narrative and existential sense. We’ll probably never know what happened to the gender swapped Peter Parker clone who was that world’s Spider-Woman. Or the Gwen Stacy Carnage symbiote.
On the other hand, that version of Magneto makes this one look like Charles. No lie.

The theme of tension between mutants and humans is incredibly core to the X-Men comics in general. In the comics, when she's this age (if I've got the timeline right), she can only phase through and stay in objects if she's holding her breath (i.e. pulling Juggernaut into the floor rather than running through walls) although she does this really cool thing called "air walking" where since she's intangible she can treat air like a surface she stands on.
When she's older, she can rip out people's organs too. (in the more recent marauder's comic she phases a gun into a guy's leg and leaves the mechanism functionally in place so if he pulled the trigger it would tear the tissue apart) There was also the giant bullet thing.
She actually cameos in the first 2 movies as well (walks directly through Xavier's office door in X1 and falls through the floor/ceiling to escape the invasion in X2)

The ending scene with Magneto / Eric indicates that the "cure" is not a permanent fix, it is more like a suppressive agent which has to be taken on a regular base to keep up the effect. So everyone who only gets injected once will regrain his or her powers (Magneto, Mystique, Rogue and so on) unless the person decides otherwise.

This is a good movie for people just entering the X-Men universe, it's a GREAT first step in a flight of stairs.
Does it have everything lore accurate? No, does it have proper power scaling? No. Does it introduce the characters JUST ENOUGH for you to get invested in? ABSOLUTELY YES!!!

"I wouldn't want paper airplanes just randomly flying throughout the room."
Out of all the mutants with dangerous/impressive powers in this movie, the kid who can slowly float a couple of paper airplanes is where you draw the line?

Yes, the running theme of the X-men comics was always a mirror of societal attitudes towards different races, LGBT and basically any people who are deemed "other" and feared / despised just for how they were born.
On the surface its an interesting social commentary but I don't think it quite works because many of these mutants are a legitimate danger to others even if they don't mean to be.

The cure is temporary. Charles put himself into another body when he died. So he is not dead. We see that in the end credits.

You’re absolutely right about Magneto wanting to be at the top. The comics have had several alternate universe/timeline stories(House of M most famously) that show Magneto turning out to be exactly the sort of revolutionary who becomes a dictator just as bad if not worse than the oppressors he overthrew. Also a quick explanation of the post credits scene where Charles calls the doctor Moira. In the comics, Moira McTaggert is his love interest.

You mentioned that the X-Men really feel like a family, and that's the correct takeaway. That's one of the major reasons why they're so beloved. The X-Men are a family, while the Avengers are coworkers.

In the comics, there are omega level mutants. Jean is an omega level because of her telepathy. Her powers are amplified to a massive (multiversal) scale when bonded with the Phoenix Force (a powerful cosmic entity). The Phoenix Force considers Jean as its perfect host. Storm is an omega level weather manipulator who can manipulate other planet’s weather. She is married to Black Panther and is considered a real Goddess by Wakanda. In the latest comic, she can wield Thor’s hammer. Bobby is an omega level thermokinetic who froze hell once and is basically immortal in his ice form. And of course, the master of magnetism, Magneto.
