  • I Felt like making a short video to test some gear so I rode down to an amazing waterfall just out of Sydney. I left very late Friday 13th and spent a few hours sleeping in a cave until the sun came up.
    Took a few photos and them came home. Awesome little adventure!

    In 1967 my sister got on a boat and headed out to Australia, during the trip, the six day war in the middle East eruppted and the boat had to go the long way round, South Africa etc. She came back for a few months in the early 70's but decided that Australia was a better place and got the hell out of this place. I suffer terrible guilt for not making any attempt to stay in touch with her, it racks my soul and there must be many more like me who feel such loss.

      Somehow I found a tiny patch that wasn’t super wet. I took an old foam mat which got wet on the bottom but held up ok. Only a few drops on the forehead 😂
      As for the temp, I was pretty warm from running around with the camera and was actually hot in bed. It was a little cool in the morning but luckily no wind so it was kind of pleasant. Definitely loved starting the day down there. Would do it again for sure 👍

      That Shogun is my favourite fit out of all my old bikes. It’s a good size, the geometry is nice, only problem is I think it’s built too tough 😂. The frame has no flex at all so it’s pretty rough to ride. Such a shame because I had good feelings about that frame!

      Thanks mate! I’ve been wanted to try some night shots for a while to see how the footage held up and I was pretty impressed. Definitely good to know for future rides. As for the Shogun, I’ve just been away this weekend on it and the size and shape is really nice but it just felt very stiff. I’m not sure if was the rough trails I was on or that the Mongoose just flex’s a lot more. I’m not sure about it now. I think I might go back to the Mongoose for the next ride.

      A lot of the track in the National Park has been replaced with those board walks because the erosion was getting so bad. It’s really cool but unfortunately not for bikes. I only had to do a short section of it. The whole length is close to 30km which would be awesome on bike.

    Recently found your channel and I absolutely love your content - amazing photos and videos! What do you film/photograph on and do you put your trails up on all trails or something? My partner and I are going to attempt the Long Plain Kosciusko trip!

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Amy, Thanks for the nice feedback.
      The camera I use is a Canon R6. Depending on what Long Plain trip you watched it could have been my old camera which was the Canon EOSr. I upgraded because the 4k video on the EOSr has a huge crop, (zoomed in) which meant I needed different lenses for video and photos which as you can imagine was extremely annoying. I could have filmed in a lower resolution but decided to upgrade before a trip around NZ last year.
      These types of cameras are a bit bulky for bikepacking but I love them so I stick with it.
      I also use a GoPro 8 for the on bike riding footage.
      As for the trail files, I've thought about making an all trails profile, well I did but never put anything on it. I do have some files I've shared on google drive which may help. Link below
      Just be aware the gates of the highway are closed for winter as it can get covered in snow in there. I think they open the October long weekend. Enjoy it down there, I absolutely love it and can't wait to get down there again.
      Cheers, Tim

    What a great adventure!
    In the U.S. they're called S24O's; sub 24 hour overnighters, popularized by Grant Peterson of Bridgestone and Rivendell bikes fame. Leave in the afternoon, camp somewhere by yourself or with some buddies ('mates' in British 😁), eat some dinner, sleep, pack up in the morning, and go find breakfast.

    Another great ride mate. Question for you - what size is that sea to summit dry bag you use on your rear rack?

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the long answer but I’ve got 2 bags. In this video and most of my videos I’ve been using a 25L Crane dry bag that I bought from Aldi a few years ago. I’d been using it because it was the perfect size for my huge sleeping bag. In March I bought a new sleeping bag which is about half the size and cost a fortune. My Crane bag has a little hole in it so I’ll stop using it when I take my good sleeping bag.
      When I rode to Pockets Hut (last video) i used my sea to summit dry bag which is the Big River 35L model. It was too big but I rolled it up a lot. Just this weekend gone I did another trip down in Kosciusko and used the 35L sea to summit bag again. This time the weather was cold and I packed some extra jackets and thermals etc. the 35L was still too big but it was easy enough to roll up smaller and to be honest was kind of nice having the space on this cold trip. The problem with having a big bag is you end up filling it. My next video will have the Sea to Summit bag but I haven’t even started editing it yet.
      Hope that helps 👍

      @anthonymiller4004 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anthonymiller4004 I think the 20l would be a good size. Also if it helps. In my pockets hut video, Nik has 2 x 5L bags on the side of his rear rack and I Believe the one on Top is the 13L model. His was jam packed and hard to close.

    Yep everyone thought I was crazy when I caught a ride share 1200 km from home to spend 60 days bikepacking with my dog on a dirtbag budget and it was the best decision of my life. If you're living life to the fullest someone is guaranteed to think you're insane! Who was the "royalty" I didn't see that video...?

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  ปีที่แล้ว

      I love this comment. So many people get caught up wanting the latest phone or the latest car and all they get out of it is having to work more. I can’t wait till the day comes I get to spend 60 days on the road. I think i could do it cheaper than the cost of a weekend air bnb 😂 (maybe). I know what I’d prefer and I think everyone else is crazy for not trying it.
      As for the bikepacking royalty, I was meeting a few guys I had spoken to on Instagram, one of them started the desirelines website and to me, a nobody getting into bikepacking, it felt like I was meeting royalty. I planned to call them that in the future video but they had to pull out. I still made the video but it was just different to what I thought it would be about 😂

      @@advanturest if you have all your gear and don't need transportation to and from the route, and ride into town to shop at affordable grocery stores, theoretically it could be done for the same cost as staying home. I spent about $1000 in 60 days including the cost of that one 1200 km ride share, and many fine brews along the way. You're right about not wanting too much for sure, minimalism was my philosophy then - "everything that you own, owns you a little". These days I can appreciate the value to spend a little bit more on bike and gear and cameras but still remembering to keep it minimal. Cheers buddy!
