Love everything but the Rod design. Not fan to have proprietary rods, and having to secure heavy lenses on a small screw like that. Woud love different design on that part.
Tinsel strength of metal alloys might beg to differ re: screws supporting lenses-however you can easily add universal rod mounts to the bottom of the cage ($8 on Amazon) to achieve a more traditional rod mounting system. Although these are also held into place with screws.
I've never seen rods attached to a cage like that before. I'm digging the design of the cage. I guess the design of the Pyxis camera has a lot to do with it.
8:12 For the logic you’re expressing vis a vis placing holes in the same place that Blackmagic has theirs - is the intention that the location is the same but you only use your holes and NOT theirs? Or that you screw into both? If the former, those should be blind holes with shallow taps that don’t allow the screw to pass through but instead bottom out. If the latter, they should not be threaded (thread alignment won’t match the threads in the body of the camera) but rather clearance holes for pass through to the body itself. It looks like you have a situation where users can screw into both the cage and body threads which can cause real issues with binding and or galling.
The vast majority of mounting screws don’t protrude longer than 6mm beyond the accessory you are mounting. The cage is 6mm thick on top (8mm on bottom)and the camera has about 1mm of chamfer above the screw holes (as well as a bit of buffer space between the cage and the camera) so the likelihood of a screw coming into contact with the threads below is extremely slim. If that were the case you can source shorter screws (and you would need to source longer screws as well if you wanted them to pass through the cage and into the camera below).
Love the cage. light and compact. Best cage I've seen so far plus full body and screen protection. Brilliant!! I hope it's not too early to ask. Hoping for slightly longer than 6" rails option
Thanks so much! I definitely designed it with practical use in mind. As for longer rods it may be a bit. There will be a medium, 4.5” rod before anything longer than 6” but I’ll see what I can do.
Absolutely brilliant thinking through the difference between L- mount purist vs reaching for other mounts. Looks like a fantastic design. And that is a hell of a good price.
There is no lens interference with the cage. The opening is wide enough and flush enough that lenses will mount without issue-meaning all adapter will work as well. I cannot test every adapter, but haven’t found one yet that doesn’t fit. The only issue might arise from adapters with “drop-in” filters, as the outer edge of the cage protrudes about 5mm for the NATOs etc. but again, I haven’t tested such an adapter yet.
Thank you! And maybe!-once the resources are there, absolutely. It’s a very new company and the Pyxis is our first big release (the other cages were for older, existing cameras). If this performs well enough then I can start expanding to more camera systems 👍🏻
I know this is off-topic but I have been reading about the BMPCC OG decaying over time. Anyway, I thought about the Pyxis but I really wish BMD put out something with AF. As it is I'm choosing between the FX6 and the C70. Do you happen to have experience with them?
Both are great cameras. I have heard great things about both. I might lean towards the fx6 if you plan on doing more production style work. Also-the fx6 will soon have the ability to record BRAW via Blckmagic’s video assist. The c70 might be better for smaller, run and gun setups but really I think you will be fine with either camera 👍🏻
@@WillvonTagen I really want this to be true but I'm not finding info. Where did you hear that the FX6 will be able to record BRAW via Blackmagic's video assist?
BMD presented this at IBC and a rep just confirmed it in an interview with ProAV this morning. Sony Cameras with SDI output will have this feature available in the next Video Assist firmware update.
This is undoubtedly a cage made with attention to detail and with great consideration of all the possibilities or needs of the users. Thank you for your work.
I just want someone to design a cage the has some sort of Sony bp battery to v mount or gold mount option that locks into the cage for a single body system. Much like the tilta fx6 cage. How the v mount rear locks into the top plate of the cage. No more rear rails for me.
Love this cage... Am getting the L mount Pyxis.... have the DZO L to EF adapter, wil this work? Great job with the design, also detail, in putting the cage out. Thanks...
It’s very unlikely. The marketplace is so flooded with cages for the 4K/6k that it would be impossible to create one that could even sustain itself. I see them sell for $10 on eBay now.
I’ll think about the yellow gold ;) something for Ursa Cine would be a fair ways out. I’ve put about all my resources into getting this one going for the time being.
I am praying that the more popular bodies will be able to allow for a black magic c8nema camera 2.5 K/production camera 4K variant to replace the wooden camera elusive solution on the market or should I say no longer on the market
@@WillvonTagen I know this doesn't help too much, but I'm telling you I would pay for the STL and multiple copies of the cage. I certainly know that this is definitely a business stretch at best, but from one human being to your comment section. I hope you as long as the company is alive. Keep the notion alive and before its end though. Hoping for generations of prosperity, that such a product would release to the die-hards who still treated like a bespoke re camera and each ISO range like a different film stock. I know such a product could even be priced double the price of some of the going products in your catalog, but perhaps a handful of us may be willing to bite into a micro run. Even a cage only solution with maybe just a universal lock for a speed booster for weight concerns, hell even the cage itself, I feel like folks might be willing to Go for a micro run
@@WillvonTagen I'll give you a piece of context, I've got my hands on three copies of this camera, the third one finally came with the proper cage, a fourth one was stolen from me, and this cage. Cage, I believe the wooden camera screws are slightly stripped or proprietary unbeknownst to me, and I'm worried that I won't even be able to swap out this unit for a production 4K model that has a better internal battery for external and internal hot swap capabilities. The prospect of hunting for a fifth copy or the cage is daunting, and also the impetus for this follow-up comment. I hope this is a useful data point to you though, in all honesty. A reflection of perhaps the few in the community willing to pay and the perspective of why we would. 😄
You’re very high on the order list and the first few should ship out in late October. They are in production now but need to roll out in fairly large batches in order to keep the costs down 👍🏻
Yes, XLCS is a vendor on B&H but it will take a few months for it to be cataloged and stocked (Amazon too) since it’s a smaller business. Your best bet to get it sooner will be to order via the website 👍🏻
This is the most thought through cage I have ever seen, great job Will.
Thank you!
Congrats mate, you did such a great job! Loving the prototypes you sent me and can't wait to use them with the camera when it gets here :).
Thanks man! Can’t wait to see it in action!
Something is telling me that this cage will be selling like crazy. Very well thought out and built.
Haha, thanks man, I appreciate it!

Thanks man! It’s been a lot of work 😅
Wise decision are on the arri spacing pins on the rods, Will.

Look amazing guy’s. Please do something for the 6kFF 😂
Haha thanks! We’ll see what we can do 😅
That would be lovely!
AWESOME!!!! at last someone who designs with intelligence!! thanks!!!

Greetings from Australia. Thanks for the video, Will. Wow, that is some cage. I know where to go when I buy the Blackmagic PYXIS camera.

will the Full Metal Jacket interfere with lenses? and could you make a list of adapters that are 100% gonna work with the cage?

Do you know the release date for the pyxis? Cancelled my pre order but regretting it now 😆
They are now shipping. Users are slowly beginning to receive theirs. Right now just L Mount orders though.
Seems like the best cage ever!!

Tilta has the same system for their Pyxis cage-but it runs about $300. Our rods are only $20 and let you carry the v-mount system across cameras 👌🏻
