    Wow, a much easier method than trying to get the thorns off before you peel them! Thanks for this great tip.

    Thanks for sharing info for peeling those rascally cactus fruits. I have only one cactus, but right now it has more pears than I can eat all at once. It is my holiday ornamental, grey-green pads with deep red, yellow-tipped fruit, like stout votive candles. May you have a merry, bright 2024.🌞🌵🔔🎊

    My friend and I just stumbled on a giant plant of these. The owner of the house was happy to let us have as much as we wanted. But we were unprepared. We got fingers full of spines. Put we came away with a good pot full. So no we will clean then as you suggest

      Let us know how your fruit tastes. some are sweeter than others. of the varieties I’ve tried, the smaller fruits can be extra seedy.

    Great video. I agree it’s one of my favorite fruits in the world. Surprisingly many of my friends and family don’t think it’s too tasty it’s led me to believe I have a genetic predisposition to love this fruit

    • @garden2tabletv383
      @garden2tabletv383  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's so good! Yes, maybe we do have a genetic predisposition! I love these fruits so much, always have. I find that friends either love them completely, as we do, or can't get past the seeds.

    • @garden2tabletv383
      @garden2tabletv383  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Best wishes Angel! Move with care! If it's size is unwieldy, you might want to recycle an old moving-style blankets, often available in used in stacks on Craigslist, etc. Or at your local U-haul. Drape one or two over the cactus to move it, if they're thick enough you might be able to carry a large one without the spines getting into you. The blanket won't be good for much afterward though. Cheers, Catherine

    What a beautiful and healthy mother plant! The orange are the most sweet in my opinion and are my favorite too! Do you know which variety of prickly pear yours is? I'd love to know which give yellow or orange.

      That’s a good question. Opuntia ficus-indica... but I haven’t seen that broken down by colors... must be a more specific varietal designation, right? If you find out, let us know too.

    I have prickly pear here in Southern Oregon. They produce tunas, but they aren't usable. Very little flesh, lots of seeds and very gelatinous. I harvest them but can't get juice from them.

    • @garden2tabletv383
      @garden2tabletv383  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting. Mary, have you tried harvesting them when they’re not quite fully colored up? Mine turn gelatnious as the color gets deeper on the fruits. I don’t like them when they’re too ripe. But perhaps you’ve got a different variety there or different soil conditions that result in different flavor.

      @garden2tabletv383 not good. I haven't checked for roots, but 3 are still alive. The rest rotted, but I didn't use sand or cactus potting soil as potting soil. 😅 I messed up. Also they were potted during Florida's rainy season and left outside.

    Oh, you have a wonderful edible cactus Opuntia ficus-indica.
    How old are they? What fertilizer do you apply?

    • @garden2tabletv383
      @garden2tabletv383  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No fertilizer needed in my case. I'm on hard clay soil with limited rainfall, so I do water but very occasionally. I did water regularly to get them growing fast and tall, the first 3 years. This 10-12' high wall of Opuntia I planted only 8 years ago. They grow well almost everywhere on all different soil types, but prefer full sun and good drainage (I've got the sun, not the drainage!). Where are you?

      Depends on the variety... hmm.. mine taste a bit like watermelon flavor but not quite that watery, so hard to describe! So different than anything else! Depends on the variety, too. So incredibly refreshing and sweet.

    • @garden2tabletv383

      that’s a good question. Depending on your climate, sometimes they fruit same year planted, and sometimes they take several years to bear fruit.
