I'm thinking small dragons specially bred for the heat of their fire without becoming too huge. Perhaps different diets/magic rituals could result in a pint-sized dragon that had fire as hot as a large dragon. Yeah, just another "what if" type video... one small statement doesn't mean really anything. I avoid what if videos because really what if blah blah blah, the story would be different! I mean, yeah, it would be a different story all together in "what if" type analysis.
Breeding types of dragons like horses. There are Palfreys, coursers, destriers, cart horses, stumpers, etc. makes total sense. Also, once the dragons are engaged, the riders become passengers, the dragons take over. It's one of the things that made sense to me from the show. Explains to me, what happened at Storm’s End and later in the war on at least 2 other battles (Rook’s Rest and Tumbleton)
They might have had something like "combat flight training" courses where rider and dragon learn to work together. The rider learns to trust the dragon when it dives down to roast a target, and the dragon learns to control its wroth and let the rider guide it instead of just burning everything once the situation gets chaotic
Its a pretty different genre from ASOIAF, but the Temeraire books by Naomi Novak have some excellent examples of dragon breeding for different roles and abilities. It's Napoleanic fantasy/alt-history, and we see a lot of how Britain thinks about dragon husbandry and tactics. They have massive heavyweights that can move troops and equipment, small fast messengers, long winged distance flyers, acid spitters, etc. And all battle dragons have whole crews that ride in rigging on their back, with a captain, riflemen to repel boarders, and harnessmen to take care of the dragon in the field. Cool stuff.
First thing for breakfast is Professor Lightbringer teaching about dragons. Second, pancakes. Not saying pancakes are less important. Never. Knowledge is also important.
This is the perfect time to roll out my new theory on the Valyrian breakfast griddle dragon harness. It uses the fire made flesh ambient heat of the dragon to provide great flapjacks on the go, for the active dragonrider lifestyle. Now, i know what you're thinking, how can the griddle heat THAT quickly especially when the windstream of high speed dragon flight is making you chilly. The entire assembly is 100% pure Valyrian steel alloy. (Up to 0.005% laboratory assayed Vsteel proprietary blend per unit) and is guarnteed to heat up to 1 league in the air. Send a raven now to receive the bonus goblet holder (shade of the evening milkshake not included)
One more : shipbound dragon. It's a small dragon, just large enough to be ridden. It's bound to a large seagoing ship, the ship has a small pen for it. It's used to feed on fish and sea mammals, so it feeds itself. It is mostly used to scout around, much like modern warships carry an helicopter. It can also assist the ship in battle, seek for help in case the ship is stranded, carry messages, and so on.
I love this whole topic, but the idea of road crew dragons in little hard hats and reflective vests with STOP/SLOW signs are endlessly hilarious to me. 100% favorite dragon mental image. 😌👌
I think the ancient great empires had fire mages and possibly partially trained wild dragons, but I think advanced dragon/human genetic experiments were perfected in Valeria. Like, they took it too far and threw off the cycle of fire with their level of magical misuse.
That's an interesting idea. Maybe the Valyrians even bred people to have "King's blood" or however they understood the magic to work. I'm visualising something similar to the Imperium's nasty tradition of sacrificing thousands of psykers per day to fuel the Golden Throne. Perhaps the Valyrians knew certain kinds of human sacrifice could somehow imbue dragons with "desirable" characteristics through some macabre ritual. But they took it too far and either offended the gods themselves, or the families of the people who got sacrificed/worked to death in the mines finally said enough is enough, but that leads directly into the "faceless dragon" theory, a great video that can be found on this channel if you haven't seen it

Glad you put this video out cause i thought of some more Dragon types since the last live stream. Im basically thinking of any function we use and breed horses for can apply to how valyrians bred dragons as well. 1) Sports: theres got to be some type of sport or game the valyrians played using their dragons. Theyre a highly competitive culture so i think this makes sense. Maybe itd be like a quidditch-esque type of game or something like it🤷🏾♂️. This could potentially use multiple classes of dragons big, small, agile, etc depending on what position the player is. The sport of polo, thats played on horseback, is my inspiration for this. 2) I thought the idea of Dressage Dragons was pretty funny. Id guess smaller, agile, more beautiful dragons could fly through some hoops and rings n stuff like in dressage. Similar to the “best in show” dragons you mentioned earlier. 3) Crane Dragons. You would think the valyrians would use dragons to lift heavy structures like steel beams and put them into place like we use big cranes for. Most depictions of valyria have high rise type buildings in it so im thinking thats one way would they could build the structures so high. Surely theres more, id be interested to hear what others you all can come up with.
For my own writing/rpg making purposes, I theorized about dragon breeds a few years back. For my own purposes I only really worked on a split between "war dragons" and what I just called "royal dragons." One thing that I considered for my own stuff but think would be fascinating in a headcanon context, is Targ war dragons bonding to their rider in a different way. That is, a war dragon being bred to be able to bond with a new rider fairly quickly after losing their rider, and bonding through "Dohaeres" rather than through some kind of blood/fire magic. This would be advantageous in battle, as you could take over a riderless dragon a lot faster in a combat situation if you only need to speak the words rather than do a whole ritual.
21:25 maybe they had magical or heavily poisoned arrows. Weirwood arrows seem like they might be effective (at least bloodraven thought so) and probably enough venom from a magical creature like a manticore would do the job.
14:40 what a great image. It kinda reminds me of the ancient mother dragon you find guarding the border of Caelid in ER. But even she is smaller than I how big I visualize Balerion in xis old age. We're talkin' "blot out the sun" big
I missed this broadcast when it came out. Yesterday I had a dream about a Valyrian character that made stuff - and had a dragon. This dragon had a mellow, intelligent personality; she could fight, but was reluctant to do so and usually just fought with her tail, claws and saved the fire for the most implacable of foes. The Valyrian character was descended from the people who made the Iron Throne and she had the bond with her dragon. They just ranged around the world and made “everything from daggers to houses.”
Thanks David for the meaningful videos and posts. The spouse is away so this cat has lots of things on a "honey do" list to accomplish; videos like this one and the dragon lore from Sunday go a long way to help the task and errands happening seamlessly. Thanks again
On the subject of breeding dragons for show and as pets, did anyone else think of Discworld? Lady Sibyl Ramkin bred swamp dragons. She was part of a swamp dragon breeding club. They had dragon shows, kept track of pedigrees, and ran an abandoned dragon rescue. People used swamp dragons in blacksmith shops to heat the metal. I can totally see the Valyrians breeding little dragons for pets.
13:46 that pic on the right is awesome. I wonder if the dragon is young or if that's a real big fish? Either way the idea if dragons fishing is very evocative, quickly and gracefully spearheading into the water and back out again in a heartbeat, but emerging with a great wriggling Ghiscari rainbow halibit in their claws
Remember listening to this really interesting history podcast which talked about how part of the reason(s) for Roman Empire collapse was they lost means to traverse their empire efficiently which then incurred weaker capabilities that helped shatter along with other elements the empire
There's this series of novels called the "Temeraire" series that had different dragons serving in the Napoleonic armies. What I loved there was that the big heavyweight combat dragons had entire harnesses running along their bodies and were crewed by dozens of men with bombs, rifles for when they had to bomb armies below or fight other dragons.
Super interesting. It makes me wonder if The Cannibal was not only from another Valyrion bloodline (so that Targaryens and Valerions cant claim as a rider) but bred for another purpose. Maybe a hunting/scavenging dragon or a guard against other dragons. Or perhaps also always been riderless, and never even bonded with any Valerian bloodline.
Just imagining those 300 dragons after seeing the affect 1-4 dragons have on a battlefield in the currently available shows. Like could you imagine watching the Vhagar vs the rivermen or Caraxes vs the Crabfeeder pirates, and then going home and seeing 300 war dragons rolling in to what I can only assume was Ancient Valyrian death metal.
The thing about troop dragons is that the idea is cool on paper but not exactly in practice. If you need sometging of vhagar's size to transport about 20ish men their loadout is limited but also you have to acknowledge the elephant in the room which is... you have a dragon the size of vhagar... which can slaughter well over tenfold the amount of men it would carry to the battlefield
Thank you for crediting the artists and not only that only using human made art, I find it rare to see people that make videos actually credit the artists that allow them to make such content
Good luck fighting these people! Lol, I agree. Until the powers against them realize that pitting them against themselves is the way to beat them. Ominous thought in modern times.
9:41 OH that reminds me of some of the dragon breeds in a book series called "His Majesty's Dragon" basically the Napoleonic Wars, in which dragons not only exist but are used as a staple of aerial warfare in Asia and Europe. With some being so large theirs entire crews of people maning them like a ship, including an on board dragon vet. So I could see the Valyrians having potentially massive dragons with wide bodies, big wings and able to endure alot of weight. But yes this one of my favourite things to speculate about Valyria and all the possible dragon breeds they had. Kinda want to sit down one day and draw what those other breeds could look. And speaking of our favourite fire lizards, I being thinking, you could put toogether a family tree for all the Targaryen Dragons if you looked at which physical traits they share. Example Vermax being Syraxes and Caraxes son, due to the similarities with the latter, and if is adult concept is anything to go by, his proportions look alot like Vhagar, so likely Vermithors grandson given Vermi is likely Vhagars son due to their similar proportions. Tho you could go the extra mile and put them in a metrix system like actual biologists do haha
Great stuff as usual! Thanks in particular for giving credit to the artists whose work you've used in this video - no art theft or AI crap in this house! (Or are those the same thing?) And now I'm going to spend the day wondering what kind of dragon I'd most like for myself... Probably a hybrid racing dragon/show dragon; I'm not very big, so I don't need a huge dragon for transportation, and style is very important! Having a calm dragon who could even be a house dragon, and down for pets and cuddles would be nice too. A dragon couldn't be that much more destructive than cats, right? Actually, a small road/forge dragon would be a very cool artistic companion as well! I think I need a multi-purpose crossbred mutt, just like my feline owners!
16:47 depends on the Height because in the books Vhagar died when she impacted the god eye lake while caraxes died on the shore it’s prolly mostly depending on size age and height
8:56 I don’t even think they’d need to be especially haughty to get the idea to race dragons… the real world cultures that race boats were all dependent on boats for survival at one point. Boat racing would’ve started as competition between fishermen to setting their nets on the choice spots. I can imagine there are organic ways dragon racing might’ve evolved in a similar fashion. Dani and Drogo bonded over a shared background in cultures that are oriented around riding domesticated animals. Even though she was from a culture that had forgotten these traditions, it’s just “what they do to get by” in certain foundational ways and she was captive and or open-minded enough to put these things together… the difference being the Valyrians had the means and ambition to move beyond a mere gypsy caravan of enslavement and sexual assault and got properly serious about doing all those same things but on a larger scale (ie: colonialism) 😂

I got into the GOT and HOD worlds because of the dragons. Appreciate all this dragon lore David 💫
are you the same Larissa from the internet? with the dogs? 🤣🤣🤣
@@DavidLightbringer Yes, it is me the mother of dogs 😂❤
Just imagining those 300 dragons after seeing the affect 1-4 dragons have on a battlefield in the currently available shows. Like could you imagine watching the Vhagar vs the rivermen or Caraxes vs the Crabfeeder pirates, and then going home and seeing 300 war dragons rolling in to what I can only assume was Ancient Valyrian death metal.
This channel is my forever over hyperfixation. Thank you very much for everything.
I think this is the exact nuance GRRM is talking about when he says “what is Aragorn’s tax policy”.
Good luck fighting these people! Lol, I agree. Until the powers against them realize that pitting them against themselves is the way to beat them. Ominous thought in modern times.
I'm imagining "road-making" dragons who were bred to safely consume raw earth then vomit it back up to create the smooth dragonroads.
I laughed too hard at the Nana Vhagar memes 😂
I like how Valaryan dragonlord houses parallel the Night's Watch orders, stewards, builders, and rangers.
Appreciate your work, LmL!
13:11 "Poor runty Syrax" sent me
I would love to see like a sort of movie on the doom! Such a huge mystery.
Hopefully if they make it, that's how the Aegon's Conquest show will begin.
Thanks dude, your content is great and gives me my fix until the next episode.
Nice vid David. Really interested in the ‘different dragons’ theory
I think that you would love the Temeraire series, it goes into detailed dragon breed details
Why assume that all 5 Targaryen dragons brought to Dragonstone were war dragons? Or that all the eggs they brought were from war dragons?
Thanks for the video ! Keep up the good job
So much is unknown about old Valyria and there's so much to speculate 😍😍😍 the possibilities are endless!
Great stuff as usual! Thanks in particular for giving credit to the artists whose work you've used in this video - no art theft or AI crap in this house! (Or are those the same thing?)
And now I'm going to spend the day wondering what kind of dragon I'd most like for myself...
Just want to point out something David has mentioned before but not in this video. There is something strange about the fire of black dragons.
17:00 Chat just discussing how to make mead
The book Temeraire by Naomi Novik is a good place to go when talking about dragons as troop transportation.
Meleys seems like she would be bred for speed AND war. If another dragon bites her they get a mouth full of spikes😂
Another breed definitely could have been, well, breeding dragons. Valyria would have prized fertile dragons
I just wanna take a moment to talk about Acrosaurotaurus. That man is an absolute master of his work and I follow him religiously on social media. Seriously, if anyone reading this doesn't follow him, you've got to go and follow him.
We already saw the first episode of season two, lucky "sky austria" managed to play it ysterday at an huge cinema in vienna :3
that's awesome! so jealous, im seriously like a crack addict itching for a fix waiting for S2 HOTD. But ill just pray for now that someone over there gets it uploaded to one of the free streaming sites for movies and tv shows, i remember season 1 finale was on there on the Friday before, and happened to another episode too.
For some reason, you being a bird person makes so much sense.
THIS IS SOOOO INTERESTING! I firmly believe in this idea. For hundreds of years, it's impossible that Valyrians did not breed their dragons. When curiosity meets vanity, they will definitely push their knowledge of dragons to the limit.
Spicy noodle he’s crazy
Yes! I love Wednesday drops so I can listen while I grocery shop . So excited for HotD season two! ❤
Excellent video.
Valyrian dragon beauty pageants really crack me up 😂
Don’t kno if you play ck3 but the agot mod team there is in the process of working on dragons there release time is “this summer” so I hope we get them this month
So not linked to the video but a question, do you think the reason grrm is taking so long with wow is because he’s writing dream of spring at the same time? And maybe that’s also why he’s writing off shoots because there’s so much back info/ extra tidbits/ lore that will come into play?
Weren't there Wild Dragons on Dragonstone? I think that's how they bred so many different types of Dragons
I always thought if you had a dragon, you had a war dragon. Hmm.
Got a bit too excited when I read “dragon breeds” 😈 🐉 🔥
The field of fire & Harrenhal was so cool
Just wanted to ask what happened to the HOTD rewatches? Were they not gathering enough views? I was hoping for the rest to lead into Season 2? Still love your content.
I think we're going to do a season preview stream on Saturday but no they were not. people didn't want to go that deep on a rewatch apparently, which makes sense to be honest
Imagine pet dragons like toy poodle size 😮
Amazing thanks David!
Imagine how spectacular Sunfyre would have been if he was able to grow another 20 yrs without the injuries and Rook’s Rest and MoonDancer. He would have grew to be at-least the size of Silverwing or Maelys.
I'm wondering - Could they not load smaller, faster dragons onto Vhagar to get some kind of flying aircraft carrier?
Was the video cut or will there be a longer version?
this was cut out from the dragon lore iceberg stream, so yeah there's more on that one
Caraxes for probably for travel and journeys. Long and slender
Great bob marley outro😂
what about bad dragon?
"you want the bad dragon"
Never did I ever think I'd hear Rex Splode talk about Targaryen Dragons on youtube.
Where's the vid about Rickon and Skagos???
I love listening to your ideas about the game of thrones world.
Can you do a new series of chapter by chapter analysis of asoiaf please
You're the man
my fav dragon is silverwing
I think this is brilliant. The same way dogs were bred for different purposes. I like the idea of troop transport dragons. They could put big carriers on their backs. Poor Papa Balerion, poor cows.
I wanna see a prime Balerion in a flash back so bad
As far as troop transport dragons go: how many people climbed aboard in the capture-a-wight mission in GoT?
almost a dozen I think
