- Aquatics expert Tom Sarac provides an in-depth overview of a beautiful Central American species - the Rainbow Cichlid!
Found on the slow-moving banks of streams and lakes in Nicaragua, Costa Rica and eastern Honduras, the Rainbow Cichlid is a stunning fish suitable for a variety of community aquariums. A hardy species, the Rainbow Cichlid tolerates a variety of water parameters, and is an equally unfussy feeder, happily accepting granules and pellets, flakes, frozen and freeze-dried foods, and even live food!

One of my favorite species. They're docile enough to keep with community fish, yet tough enough to be kept in cichlid communities. As an added bonus, they'll absolutely gobble up any hair algae (their main diet in the wild).
amazing cichlid
Thank you very much for yr comment about this fish, your explanation was very important for to buy this fish, very nice fish, beautiful yellow.
I subscribed due to your presentation on rainbows, and me adoring your Aqua clear filters for decades
Thank you for subscribing! 😊
Great video, plenty of info
Great video. Currently having swim bladder issues in mine… any tips from similar cases are welcome.
Great vid, thanks Fluval!!
We're glad you enjoyed it! 😊
What tetras do you have in the tank with the rainbows?
They're Astyanax sp., from northern Colombia!
What tank size do you have them in this video?
Also where the heck did you find those cichlids??? I cant find anyone that has those tetras.
The tank in this video is the Shaker 66! fluvalaquatics.com/us/shop/product/shaker-aquarium-set
We sourced the fish from one of our local suppliers. 💯
Can I only keep females in a community tank or just one? And which one would recommend more to a community tank. T bar cichlid or this one?
Our community tank had both males and females, but we made sure to choose species that could keep up with the cichlids! In our experience, Rainbow Cichlids are more peaceful than T-Bar Cichlids, but as with all cichlids, it will vary a bit!
Do they like air bubblers?, mine have fry
Hello. I'm curious, would Rainbow cichlids eat duckweed and can they be a solo centerpiece fish with platty?
Although we've never tried the combination, we think Rainbow Cichlids would probably eat duckweed - they spend their days picking away at basically anything that even resembles a plant or algae! Platies are good tankmates for them. 👍

Thank you.
I can't find them anywhere!
Can you guys do a sort of Mythbusters video about electric blue Jack Dempsey
Iv seen so many videos with so many different versions of the truth about them it's silly
We've added it to the list! 👍
@@fluval awesome thank you! Very interesting fish electric blue now there's gold and electric pink
I did not heard of the electric yellows or pinks in a jack dempsey, supposedly there's GloFish rainbow sharks and Angels now, why not though it's not my thing, everything I'd heard about the electric blue Jack Dempsey's told me too hard for this dude
What are the tetras they’re living with in your tank?
They're Astyanax! It's a species from northern South America. 👍
@@fluval Astyanax is a genus containing more than 100 species. I was hoping to find out which of those 100+ species it is.
The local fisherman unfortunately did not provide us with an identification, and due to the diversity of species it's difficult to narrow down exactly which one it is!
cool fish
3 questions: could i keep them in a mega flex? are they plant safe? what heater and syphon do you recommend for a mega flex?
Thanks :-)
Hi Nathan! The Flex 32.5 is a bit small for an adult Rainbow Cichlid - as Tom mentioned in the video, a 50 to 75 US Gal tank is more appropriate for a pair. They generally do nip at plants, but some broad-leaved plants, like Echinodorus, are usually safe! We recommend the M150 heater for a Flex 32.5: fluvalaquatics.com/us/m-series/
We have a bunch of gravel cleaners available - check them out! fluvalaquatics.com/us/product-category/maintenance/gravel-cleaners/
Mine not colorimg up and I have them with rainbows, I have 1 male 2 females
Try changing up their food! Fluval Bug Bites Color Enhancing granules are a great choice. 👍
