This is amazing when you have a sick child. I tried this when my daughter had her tonsils removed. Just added peas and carrots. She loved it and when she feels queezy, she’ll ask for this. Mind you she is a very picky eater.

When did you add in the carrots and peas?

Pretty much like Jook, except your process is so much easier to make then what I've been doing. I never think of it as slimming meal as it can be a whole meal in itself, it you add in Chinese Parsley, pickled daikon, char siu,, green onions, slivers of fried egg, or using roasted duck/chicken or adding chili oil to it. Hmmm, great hot meal on cold snowy or wet days with fried gyoza or mandoo. Going to try it when I get a chance.

Making.a richer broth is key to this dish..cook whole chicken or 6 thighs for 3/4 hours with whole onion and one celery stick..big pot to cook stock down to half..take out chicken onion celery..flavor to taste and continue with cooking rice..etc..

Came back to say I tried this today! I think I did well for my first time because it tasted quite nice. Sadly I only had green onion an sesame oil to garnish ): and I think if I had a bone-in chicken (I used boneless skinless chicken breast) it would be even more flavorful. At the end, I definitely understood that this was the type of dish that you can add lots of toppings to. I think next time I'll get put some furikake flakes....maybe an egg. I googled & saw that ppl put bacon or coriander or dried plums. Kinda like pizza. Anywayyy, 10/10 for me :)

Rice porridge is a Japanese comfort food, traditionally slightly sweetened and served when one is sick. My mother used to make it for me whenever I was too sick to go to school. I've made it myself (with greater or lesser degrees of success) when it's cold outside. It has never occurred to me to add anything more than a spoonful of sugar. I'm warming up my pot right now! Thanks!
