Did the Occult Influence Karl Marx and Early Communism?

- Marxism has transformed the world, for better and for worse. But what lies are the root of the philosophy of Karl Marx? Are there occult roots to what became world Communism? This episode explores to what degree, if any, hermetic ideas from Hegelian Idealism came to influence Marx. What about Kabbalah or other Esoteric currents?

Could you make a video about Haitian Vodou in general? It has an interesting pantheon, practices and history considering its a blend of Catholicism, the indigenous folk religion and the African Vodun. Its a shame that the rest of the world only known it for its magic practices which of course includes zombies
Have you read Ian Wright's article Marx on Capital as a Real God and its sequel Dark Eucharist of the Real God? I feel like they would be INCREDIBLE grist for the mill for an ESOTERICA video and if not, I think you'd REALLY enjoy them.
One thing that interests me greatly is your bit about Marxist apocalyptic theology and how it differs greatly from my own conception of the Marxist class struggle. Of course, I do hold to some extent to that idea that the final revolution, however that happens, must be violently apocalyptic, I never viewed the struggle as building up towards a final, Book of Revelations type battle. Instead, I have always conceived of it as this cyclical back and forth between labor and capital akin to the struggle between the devas and asuras in Hinduism, with late-stage capitalism functioning more like a Kali Yuga period in which we more likely than not descend into fascism and then possibly come out the other side to start the cycle partially anew. This probably has to do with my Hindu upbringing as compared to the Christian context of a lot of these thinkers, but I think it really goes to show how much your religious upbringing is a potent material force in shaping your conception of reality and the ideas of others.

I'd be really interested in an episode on Max Stirner. He had some pretty unusual philosophy and it seems to have been partially inspired by concepts from multiple religions

Sleep with the head placed east. Sunbathe or shine white LED light on skin during the day and at night use LED lights on red(sunday), orange(monday), yellow(tuesday), green(wedsnesday), blue(thursday), indigo(friday) or violet(saturday) settings and expose all skin to the light. Another helpful suggestion. From friday sunset to saturday sunset rest the sabbath which means no lighting fires(no lighters, stovetops, etc.), no physical exercise, no singing or listening to music, and no buying or selling. This will increase yin in the body for the following week. Breaking the sabbath(doing the opposite) will increase yang in the body for the following week. During the sabbath, if keeping the sabbath, wear all white clothing. If breaking the sabbath, wear all black clothing. Rotate the sleeping cardinal direction at the end of every sabbath: east, south, west, north in the northern hemisphere or east, north, west, south in the southern hemisphere. Take neem(sparingly), cinnamon, turmeric, curcumin, nutmeg, gotu kola, schizandra, fo-ti, garlic, vitamins and minerals. Drink lemon juice, lemon balm, mint herbal teas and kefir. Drink organic caffeinated coffee, tea or cocoa in the morning(take breaks from caffeine as well). Also take n-acetyl cysteine, bromelain and nattokinase(detox). Experiment with resting one different day of the week the same as the sabbath(from sundown to sundown)or every other day sabbath. Worship Amun-Ra. Look into Nos Confunden's terra infinita map.
Oh thank god you went into it. the way people abuse the "opiate of the masses" line is infuriating. Its more sympathetic to religious thought than anyone would at first assume by its use (even if its still a negative impression). But also yeah even as a marxist this video is extremely good.
Ppl never read the whole piece. Taken out of context on purpose. And those who do thst do it because he was correct.
This is simply gold. As a Marxist, I got so shocked when I read Magee's book and found out how little we actually know about the roots of our systems of thought. I'm so glad to have found your work. it is amazing that historical materialism allows us to make a critique of the method itself! Thank you very much for this marvelous content
I have never clicked a thumbnail faster holy shit
I recently discovered my ancestors were members of the Jewish Labor Bund. I'm eager to learn more about the Bundists.
Regarding the occult in Capital, I've always been fond of this weird note in volume 1, chapter 1:
"In the German edition, there is the following footnote here: “One may recall that China and the tables began to dance when the rest of the world appeared to be standing still - pour encourager les autres.” The defeat of the 1848-49 revolutions was followed by a period of dismal political reaction in Europe. At that time, spiritualism, especially table-turning, became the rage among the European aristocracy. In 1850-64, China was swept by an anti-feudal liberation movement in the form of a large-scale peasant war, the Taiping Revolt. - Note by editors of MECW.
Edit: Also loved the mention of The Society of the Spectacle; besides the expansion of the ideas around commodity fetishism, the chapter on time and history really contributes to the connection with apocalypticism, presenting the temporality of communist society as the dialectical supersession of the "irreversible time of capital" (preserving its irreversible character while negating its exclusion of the free development of humanity from "history", which is then limited to a history of commodity production), which is itself a sort of extension of the "Christian era".
In relation to that, it'd be interesting to see something on Benjamin or more specifically his theses on the concept of history, if you wanna keep doing these labour day specials. Keep up the good work!
It's crazy how far Dr. Sledge's comedic timing has come on this channel lol.
This was such a cathartic video.
I’ve been researching Hegel off and on for more than a decade, along with other German philosophy (meta-philosophy, theory, theology, and psychoanalysis if I’m honest). I’m in groups that are fundamentally at odds, but no less wonderful for exploring ideas in the spirit of curiosity.
I came upon James Lindsay last year, and have watched almost his entire catalogue. He seems like a guy who found philosophy 15 minutes ago, and has created a loosely conservative mirror to left-wing intersectionality. He strictly doesn’t let himself out of his ideological silo and calls people who challenge his thesis “wizards,” much like intersectional types use _ism and _phobe.
I detected some jabs here. I think that they were fair game.
Gothic horror Marx is a fantastic spin.
I rolled my eyes when I first saw you mention James Lindsey, but then your description of him was spot on.
@@BreathlessOblivion08 for real. I’ve been trying to get through to some of his fans that I know, and I’ve had some success.
No, Plato isn’t a tyrant. No, a dialectic isn’t marrying truth to a lie.
He tends to be wrong about so much, that the few things he’s almost right about get delegitimized as a consequence.
@@Pugilist379I would like to have a discussion, as a fan of James Lindsay. I don't know philosophy from a hole in the ground (there is a discussion topic 😅), but I tend to agree with his general take that something is amiss with the direction of "leftness" (again... I don't know politics from a hole in the ground either), and the reaction of some of the "right" to that "leftness". I find him at times abrasive, and overwrought but I still find value in his disection of some of the academic texts he brings to the table. Thoughts?
@@straypacket happy to discuss!
So, with regard to his critique of the Frankfurt School, I don’t think that he’s entirely wrong. In fact, most philosophical blocs from the Marxist and post-Marxist tradition think that the Frankfurt school, and other theory drawn by the inertia of its derivatives, inc Crenshaw, are an op (ref CCF) to delegitimize communist projects due to their absurdity and tendency not to exercise any rational projects that go anywhere. Philosophy circles beyond that sphere, while contentious toward one another for varying reasons, would agree in that much.
Where he gets it wrong, is where he depends on 1) not interacting in dialogue with those who challenge his thesis, and 2) building phylogenetic trees of completely unrelated philosophers in these grand conspiracies that WHOLLY DEPEND on you not actually reading each in the context in which they’re being proposed, or really, at all. I’m happy to discuss specifics to the best of my ability, depending on what you’d like to know specifically; be it on here or another forum.
In my personal opinion, I’m not convinced that Lindsay has read nearly as much as he claims, in which his proposals are predicated. If he has, he’s taken some tremendous creative license in making everything fit together in the way that supports his ideas.
Additionally, there are several thesis from different groups as to the origins of “woke.” I’ve heard several that are more complete than Lindsay’s.
My friend and I were going to start a zine and the parallels between gnosticism and Marxism was my first topic! You win this time, Dr. Sledge!
Sounds like a good idea for a zine! Or a TH-cam channel! 👍 Pray proceed... (I've always had a bit of an interest in Gnosticism: I "introduced" the Ophites to a friend a little while back (more like shoved them in his face to prove a point: for as a Lokean, I was right annoyed by his trite assumption, to the effect that: "I was only 'allowed' to see Loki as not a villain, through the lens of post-modernism". 🙄🙄 Like the "rebellious", "alternative" viewpoint is anything NEW 🙄, I retorted, and came up with the Ophites as an example, from my reading of Colin Wilson. 🙂)
But overall, I've never really understood Gnosticism: though I noted that popular novelists such as Kate Mosse (and to a lesser extent, Dan Brown) made a thing of them in pop culture some years back.
So I might appreciate some accessible content thereon.. 🙂
@@oneoflokis If anything, it would probably be a mixture of History (friend is a history major), critical theory and esotericism/religion. Maybe some oddball film analysis too.
God is a Fascist Dictator sounds like a song title, but needs some pseudo intellectual word substitution to hone it to perfection.
@@oneoflokis Funny I was allowed to see Loki as a non-villain by being told the stories where he isn't one in the order they're actually given in the prose Edda.
@AC-dk4fp Graat for you! 🙂👍 (This friend of mine is bi-polar and went a bit funny on me. This "Loki is an evil villain" shtick, comes I think either from books he's read by conservative Heathens (eg Stephen Flowers/Thorsson).. can't be off Rick Riordan, he's a bit too old for those! 😄 Or at least to BELIEVE those, I've read them.. Or you know, a conventional Christian upbringing can really make you prejudiced/blinkered in some ways.. 😏 This guy is a fairly militant atheist now, but is also quite heavily into angelology and demonology. (Oh, and Chaos magic.) But is still quite conventional-thinking in some ways I believe.. (Thing IS, I don't tell him what to believe about angels, because they're not my specialist subject! Loki, on the other hand... Is mine, and not his! 🙂) Well I think some therapy via Zoom has calmed him down a bit, is all I can say.. 🤷♀️)
You could probably do a Part 2 of this on the philosophy of Philipp Mainlander, as he synthesized Hegel and Schopenhauer in his masterwork "The Philosophy of Redemption" that has actually just this year been translated into English for the first time. The fact that Mainlander wanted to "reconcile Religion with Science and put Atheism on a scientific foundation."
Me sitting down at my computer to get some work done: OH no! New Esoterica video!
Could you possibly cover the Society of the Spectacle? As that places things as well in a rather occult way that might interest you.
EDIT: Wrote this and you put something from it on the screen right when i continued watching, read my mind before i had the thought haha 😅
This is even better than your normal videos (which are already excellent).
I think it’s fascinating that you used the adjective “primitive” instead of “early” or “original.” It really highlights to what an extent the developers whom you earlier highlighted as totalitarians influenced the concept of Marxism. It brings to mind the early soviet legal theoretical battles over bourgeois law.
I am not always a big fan of the esoteric, but I am a big fan of the way your mind works and your ability to *precisely* articulate it.
Cheers from a new subscriber.
Great video! I'd be very interested in a possible exploration of similar occult and esoteric influences on anarchism, especially egoists and individualists like Max Stirner.
Im not marxist nor meterialist, but I will always enjoy your rare scholarship and I truely value your sceptical worldview, even when my intuition differs with yours or maybe because of that. Thrice great thanks to you Doctor.
I believe that Engels was interested and wrote on the 1536 Munster Rebellion. The Anabaptists as early Communists would have been of interest as a Communist test case. They are also connected to Boehme. I have unfortunately lost the reference to Engel's paper. Of course as an Evangelical movement Munster is also connected to the Evangelical right in America. While Marxism may be a Materialist philosophy the common understanding as far as advocates are concerned or vulgar Communism is well within the Religious domain.
Yeah, they were all about that peasant rebellion life.

So true!
I never realized that when Marx talked about class struggle, he was referring to the eternal struggle between wizards and sorcerors.
This kinda thing is so necessary. Level-headed reviews of this subject are understandably rare.
What's always been interesting to me is how Marxist philosophy is also very well adapted to religions in some cases, leading to interesting cases like the Zapatistas who merged apocalyptic Christianity with the apocalyptic utopianism of Marxism to form (or reform, debateably) revolutionary, anti-establishment Christianity.
Chef's kiss on this episode. Thank you.
I was expecting a mention of God-building or later russian oddities and syncretic practices during and before the Russian Revolution. But this video stuck closely to Marx and was fairely thorough in its analysis, especially the Capitalism-as-Vampire section, I've only seen it discussed once before and it fits perfectly in the context of this video. Good video as always!

very very good analysis. Even tough I have some disagreements with your conclusions about marx's legacy, your analysis was amazingly well done and considerate. I tought this would be kind of a reactionary take on marxism, but it surprised me a lot
Absolutely stellar. I attribute much of my ‘awakening’ if I were to call it that due to my interest in economics and morality. I was reading a lot of Amartya Sen then got in to some Marxian economic theory. That got me in to Hegel’s dialectics and Phenomenology which really opened me up. It resonated a lot with Platonic and Hermetic thought the more I traced its source.
You’ve just outdone yourself here. Please keep on this track. Upping my Patreon. ❤
I love this channel so much. The dry humor has me giggling. Excellent content ❤
It would be really interesting to now cover the nuances of Liberation Theology and religious Communist movements around the globe. There have been people and groups that have synthesized Theology and its Idealism with historical Materialism and marxist ideas without seeing enough contradictions to pick one or the other. In fact, it was your videos on the Beguines that began my interest in religious utopianism and spiritual radicalism.
Economically and socially, I'm radically leftist. Metaphysically, I'm a raving platonic occultist. the majority of my friends are all socialists and left-leaning people... who also know their astrological natal charts by memory. There's something interesting going on. Younger people on the left seem to be more comfortable with esotericism and metaphysical idealism than in previous generations. It's as if the parcels of esoteric language that Marx used in his writing allowed just enough space for a seed of spiritual utopianism to grow its minuscule roots and bide its time to germinate. I've even begun to see video essays online calling for a Spiritual and Occult Leftism to counter the established Fascist Occultism. there is a kind of acknowledgement that materialism can analyze history very well, but fails to account for an essence of reality that puts Life and Mind into harmony with the rest of the world.
One of the reasons I don't go into online leftist spaces is because, like you said, they are rife with highly dogmatic marxists that see no space for any kind of break from Marx's and Lenin's own original works. But I believe that the marxist project is not complete, and has been changing and mutating itself as time passes on. It's something I'd like to see more written about, because it is so interesting to see how two dialectically opposed poles can synthesize so well in some cases.
Keep up the good work!
Incredible video! So glad I found this channel
Great video! Have you ever though on doing a video on the mystical aspects of Walter Benjamin´s philosophy. Thanks for such good content. Greetings.
Also, as an interesting (?) trivia for those who are not familiar with Hungarian culture: the Vladimir Vysotsky of socialist Hungary, a singer songwriter by the name of Tamás Cseh quoted Marx in one of his songs about a debate club ("Világnézeti Klub"), when he wrote: "great, let's turn Hegel on to his feet from the top of his head"("fordítsuk, hű, de remek,
feje tetejéről a talpára Hegelt.")
I used to listen a lot to people like James Lindsay and it is good to get another perspective.
Arnold Ruge observed in an 1840 letter that Marx, Bauer, and Feuerbach were forming a journal where "God, religion, and immortality are cast down from their thrones and man is proclaimed God." (Cited in McClellan, Marx Before Marxism [Pelican, 1970].) Feuerback in fact defined the word "communism" in 1845 as denoting "communal man" -- ceasing to project himself into the heavens, and returning to the earth. "The return of man to himself" (from heavenly imaginings) is sometimes mentioned in Marx and Engel's early writings. They did not think this was making man into a god, just the possible author of his own destiny. Hermeticism would have rejected this entirely.
Thank you Dr Sledge. Some time ago I asked you if Marx had been influenced by Kabbalah. As a Brit who studied Marx (in the 1970s this was actually possible in the UK, rather than the myth that it is possible today) and lives in Indonesia, I promise that I was not influenced by the America right and arrived at this thought completely independently. I might add that I am also of Jewish heritage, although like Marx cannot claim that it influenced me, I hope unlike Marx there is no Anti-Semitism in my beliefs, although now am a Muslim.
I could see a potential influence of Neo-Platonism which may have run through Hegal running into Historical Materialism with a degree of the Gothic. Although I had not spotted the Apocalypticism.
I think what most convinces me of your argument is how commodity fetishism is a form of mind control.
I would say that Marx wasn't under that influence, but for example Benjamin certainly was. Walter Benjamin is the child of Marxism and the Jewish Kabbalah. In addition, to follow up on your last sentence - commodity fetishism isn't a characteristic of workers only, but also of capitalists, it's not a product of manipulation of workers by capitalists, nor is the capitalist class immune to commodity fetishism. Also, in Capital, Marx writes about other fetishisms in addition to commodity fetishism.
@@linesofflight2443 Your comment is interesting, as my own interest was much less structuralist than that of Dr Sledge regarding Marx and indeed the Frankfurt School. Maybe erroneously I have been much more influenced by the English Romantics including William Morris and the early Marx.
I was not really aware that Marx had discussed fetishism within capitalism, except in the formation of commodity fetishism, I must look into this. As for hegemony I have never seen it as a conspiratorial process but a natural process of the unequal distribution of power.
EXCELLENT. I am a politically left, Esotericist. And I approve Dr. Justin Sledge's massage.

Been a fan for a long time but felt I should leave a comment in support of this kind of content. Your gothic-horror-turned-apocaliptic-religion take on Marx's work was a very interesting and challenging lens to see things through. Here's hoping that you do get to tackle the Arcane in worker's movements and anarchism, as I bet there are many interesting stories around the first internationals and Marx's abhorrence of the occult trappings of his anarchist brothers.

I always wondered what some anti semites were talking about. Man! What a round about way to find a way to hate. Thanks for the episode sir. I’m glad things are getting better. Keep on rocking. ❤❤❤
Great video!!
One thing that came to mind in the section about Marx's Gothic tendencies and his conception of ruling ideas was his feud with and subtle internalisation of the critiques of the infamous post-Hegelian iconoclast Max Stirner, whose totalising rejection of all fixed ideas was often couched in cheeky spectral imagery (spooks in the attic of the mind) and whose notion of the "one and only" as a "creative nothing" has a paradoxically mystical character which I have seen perennially likened to apophatic theology. The contrast lies, of course, in Stirner's disposition and final outlook, seeing the apocalypticism of the Young Hegelians' view of history and indeed the concept of transformative, cyclical revolution as a dialectical process rather than cycle-destroying, self-motivated insurrection as akin to the very religiosity and moralism which repulsed him in contemporary liberalism and German society more generally. Funnily enough, Engels loved The Unique and Its Property even as Marx fired veiled shots at Stirner in his work, but you see Stirner's ideas subtly creep in as Marx more thoroughly sheds his attachments to humanism and entrenches further in his peculiar take on materialism. It's not as obvious as in, say, Nietzsche, but it's there.
Incidentally, speaking of Nietzsche: Apparently one of Marx's other bitter rivals, the vanguardist revolutionary Louis-Auguste Blanqui, considered eternal recurrence the logical conclusion to contemporary scientific observations about the universe, presaging the cosmic pessimism you see in the post-Lovecraftian tradition of all things. Not sure if Proudhon had any fun weird philosophical assertions along these lines, but I wouldn't be completely surprised.
I haven't watched the video yet but I know these comments are gonna be great. Anyways, much love Dr. Sledge!

Ernst Bloch has the most incredible writings on religion from a Marxist standpoint. I love his Principle of Hope very much, especially the third volume. Sometimes I get the sense he was high on fumes. I'm sure writing a 1400 page book on hope during the Second World War was quite an experience.

Honestly, if you are left leaning, which I assume hence your comment on this video about Marx and Occultism, I wouldn't recommend it. He was very racist, and teached some form of his own "Rassenkunde".
So good! So spot on!!!
As a Marxist anarchist I would love a video about how, before Engels had even died, Marxism had already began acting as a religious dogma among communists with the 3 volumes of Kapital acting as holy scripture.
Been staring at Das Kapital on my shelf, right next to the Manifesto and Proudhon's The Conquest of Bread. Seems I might have to finally tackle it now that I know it's secretly a gothic novel.
Excellent episode, I love the comparison of marxism to an apocalyptic religion, it's so accurate. Some marxists do very much resemble christians. It made me think of how marxism and christianity both were movements of the people, and how when the religions were adopted and made law, they became tyrannical and despotic, and anyone who disagreed was disposed of.
ANOTHER DAY ANOTHER BANGER
Your message reminded me of something I know as the churning. Where society is upended. The ones on top know is “here” struggle to stay on top while everyone below churn. Ones near the top end move down in class and others move up. This churning could change how everything is done from centralize government to no government at all. Economic values are completely different. Do you read anything in history or -isms about things that sound like this? I’ve seen it in movies and series where they break away from the plot a bit to explain this then go right back to it.

Born on May Day Comrade? You may just be the messiah we've been waiting for. :)
Congrats, magical comrade!
great topic and nice video! I'd might add that there's actually a section in the Grundrisse where Marx speaks about the power of the money-form of capital as a sort of "black magic that throw men and goods into the alchemical retort to make gold", that evaporate all the "relations and illusions that slow the bourgeios mode of production". Greetings from Chile
You're totally right can't believe I forgot that one! Have you even been reading Harvey's book on the text. Oh well, even monkeys fall from trees
@@TheEsotericaChannel You already did a great breakdown of the obscure gothic themes in Capital, enjoyable content as always. You also quoted Debord, which makes me want to see you explore the esoteric hegelian marxism of The Society of Spectacle, that would be awsome. Love your stuff, your response made my day, cheers.
@@ElGlaz The Society of the Spectacle is quite the brain-bender, it feels like reification run amok but it's meticulous, if loaded with jargon.
yeah I was waiting for this exact quote to pop up! the Grundrisse is my favourite work of his and when I clicked play I was like "he is definitely dropping that fire bar from the Grundrisse about black magic and alchemy"

@@whatabouttheearth People hang up on the catchy parts. It's like how "God is dead" from Nietzsche gained so much popularity.
But it happens EVERYWHERE, like how the whole Schrödinger's cat story is usually used to "explain" the exact opposite of what Erwin tried to say.
Probably this doesn't need more explanation.
A great sage once said, "Shrodingers Bastet is dead because it took a cheerful dose of opiates"
Threw a little bit of Benjamin Franklin in there, the quote was something like "I do apologize for missing the meeting of Congress the other morning, for I took a cheerful dose of opiates and slept in"

Not really too related at all - but I've found it interesting to learn that Eliphas Levi was kind of on the Socialism side of things. Perhaps simply due to his heart going out to the oppressed and indigent.
Sadly yet most occultist nowadays are more inclined to the right. At least where I’m from
@@matheusSerp I would say there are often positive aspects underlying why anyone chooses a particular way of being (for instance, Levi having compassion on those left behind by his society...that's a nice way of viewing his Socialist tendencies). The key is to focus on one's righteousness regarding each individual issue at hand, rather than adhering to a broad category about all issues, in my personal opinion. And life is filled with practical choices where the Ideal isn't exactly to be had, especially with divisive topics like politics.
Some right and left wingers had a keen interest in the occult
@@matheusSerpthink about that at the time Western Europe began translating occult documents only the political autocracy and rising class of merchants could afford to have such a library or do alchemical experiments. Add on top church dogma has always been more rigidly enforced on lower classes leading to a more general paranoia that it's all satanism. But the rise in the law of attraction, even though it is bastardized and watered down shows there is a hunger for non dogmatic spirituality.
@@matheusSerp Often, the sorts of socialism embraced by 19th century occultists were utopian or romantic forms instead of Marxist. & these often existed alongside religious or nationalist sentiments. Socialism was certainly an ideology concerned with the oppressed and working class, but the distinctions between left & right wing ideas within early socialism itself is pretty complicated. You have far-right French political figures declaring themselves socialists in the 19th century & Napoleon III called himself a socialist as emperor too
Listen. I'm making this fantasy game inspired by the many religions and cultures that have passed through Andalucía and I'm adding to it a lot of marxist/anticapitalist/anticolonialist ideas in the way humans relate to the different gods and this video is just an itemized list of the things I've thought for it but said out loud, specially the last third LMAO. Thanks for proving I'm going in the right direction with it 😂😂😂
Impossible to deny that people, who accomplish great things, are driven by a spiritual dimension.
Marx basically pulled a Hegel on Hegel's dialectics.
Turning dialectical idealism (thesis) on its head (antithesis) he created (synthesis) dialectical materialism. How very poetic!
Hey, this is a very good analysis though I am firmly on the left and do use Marxist lenses for analysis I do find that someone people do treat Marx's text as more dogmatic than others and this video certainly helped me understand some better frameworks to understand my fellow leftists.

Perhaps when you say that if…..
You may want to rethink……..
Maybe it’s just that some are able to hear an interesting intelligent man with whom one shares several differences of opinion, and enjoy and respect the presentation. There are many things we would differ on but also many on which we would find common ground, and that’s terribly O.K.
As a child I was taken to Australia’s version of speakers corner, were marxists, unionists, Nazis, Fabian’s and many others all spoke passionately and argued at times, but all walked away in one piece.
Good times, but by todays standard a crime full of trigger warnings.
Thank you for you work my friend.
I'm not a Marxist, but I have to say this episode was entertaining and edifying. Inverting Hegelianism seems ironically meta-Hegelian. As for the gothic storytelling, it's a fascinating call-out. It also stands to reason that every good story requires a compelling conflict (theory) if not for the purpose of constructing a grand narrative and extracting generative themes.
The subjective theory of value isn't especially entertaining, nor is it wrapped in an eschatological narrative, but I like that its utility can be trusted as a material truth. When it comes to storytelling, we all have a commodity to sell, and I'd rather we each had our own individual narratives than our "bodies" being collectivized an offering to the idol of a centrally planned eschaton, sacrificed at the altar of "history".
Living in the here and now doesn't get nearly as much credit as it deserves.
Just a thought--Karl as foreign correspondent for NY Tribune was an ardent Lincoln supporter. Liberation of humans from their degraded status.
