Making a Vinyl Record Clock

- On this week's show, I demonstrate how to make a pattern and cut yourself a wall clock, made from an old vinyl record. A little bit of laser engraving to duplicate the album label with the Wainlux L6 10watt engraver really finishes this project off. I hope you enjoy the show.

So glad you didn’t cut the record with the laser as I have seen others do. The fumes are caustic if the laser isn’t in an enclosure with good outside ventilation.
As I stated at the end of the video, cutting vinyl with the diode laser is a great way to poison yourself or make yourself very ill. I have to say that I'm glad that I did some research and didn't laser it also. Thanks for tuning in to the show and taking the time to leave your comment.
Kenny, you outdid yourself! At beginning of video, I had thought you lasered it and then watched it unfold. Luckily you didn’t and I was blown away how amazing it came out. I've been making clocks with my laser using black acrylic 3 MM in thickness after watching what you did I know I can now add another level to my clocks, Thanks for showing it.

Great looking Clock Ken👍 I have used card stock on portraits and after awhile it started to bubble with the change of humidity even after gluing the cardstock to the backer board, I use 1/16th baltic birch I apply 3 coats of clear top coat then 3 light coats of black or white colour then 2 - 3 light coats of polyurethane, Ken don't mean to take away your thunder the clock is AWESOME
No thunder taken away at all Alan. As I stated in the show, I didn't know if the card stock would stand the test of time and that I would probably have to replace it. It's good to know that I will get to work on this project again down the road to replace the backer board. Thanks for tuning in to the show and for the kind words. Have seen a lot of patterns for these clocks out there, band related ones and just general ones. I had never thought about reproducing a label for the record, so that was a great idea

Oh Wow! That is fantastic! That would make a nice gift and probably sell real well at a craft fair. I actually own one of those Lightfoot LP's. That Rodger Whittaker was one of my father's LP's. I inherited it lol. They have been packed away for years. I do have that Lightfoot on CD though. You gave a great tutorial on how to cut vinyl and the safety to look out for if you burned it. It has been 48 years since I was a Vol. Fire Man. It reminded me of my training. Thanks for the reminder! Enjoyed! Take care!

As long as you keep your speed extremely low Adam, it works just fine. A few fuzzy edges to clean up but it still works great. Thanks for tuning in

Amazing work. Thanks for sharing the video. TBH I thought you would do it with the laser engraver. (i.e. let the laser engraver do the job)
But this way you don't lose affinity with the scroll saw. And you stayed healthy and the laser stayed functional. If you make the central label a little bit larger, you have a wooden CD.
When I first thought of this project, I was excited about using the laser and making the pattern using Lightburn and getting all the fine details etc that the laser provides. Then I did the research and realized how sick (or worse) I could have made myself by using this process. Not to be discouraged, and not to give up my project idea, I came up with a work around and a very good looking clock in my opinion. As you stated, I stayed healthy and the laser stayed functional. With all those fragile cuttings, how were you able to get the masking tape off? Perhaps using alcohol to release the adhesive? Also your findings of the gas produced if using the laser was a real eye opener. Really good information and as always, a great looking project.
The masking tape peeled off extremely easily Dwight. No issues whatsoever. Always do a little research when cutting new or unknown materials. Thanks for tuning in.

It looks great. As you were cutting it, I was thinking that Freddy's mouth looked like it was going to break since it was so delicate. When you placed it on the white backer, did you use any adhesive or glue to bond the record to it. After all of the hard work, I'd be so worried it would break if I just looked at it.
The Roger Whittaker reference gave me a good laugh. I remember my dad liking his music.
No adhesive was used between the backer and the album cutting Jim. As I stated in during the show, I'm not sure if I will have to replace the backer later on or not and I would want to have to try and remove the adhesive. I may glue the backer board on a little later down the road to help stabilize the cutting, but for now, it hangs on the wall and it pretty safe where it is. Each album can take up to an hour to cut, depending on how intricate the patterns are. This is a slower process and honestly can't be rushed. Rushing the cut makes a real mess of the vinyl. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

A quick search on Amazon is how I found the set of four motors to begin with. They say that they are "currently" unavailable but they could be back in stock soon. Have you tried stack cutting them? I need to cut several of the same album.
I've never stack cut them. I think that they extra thickness of the vinyl will cause extra friction on the blade and introduce too much heat to the blade. I hope this helps Shelly. Thanks for tuning in.

What type of machine can safely cut a vinyl record? Thanks!
Well in this video, I used a scroll saw. If you are asking which laser engraver can cut vinyl, none of them safety. However, Co2 lasers with high powered ventilation systems are the closest that you will come to cutting vinyl safely with a laser. Other than that, hand cutting or scroll saws are the only way. How about a light box behind, not very bright, just enough to illuminate the silhouettes
That could be extremely cool as well Scott. A little bit of resin, poured into each cutting to stabilize it and then sanding the back to frost it (like I did with the shop made house numbers) and this could take the project to a whole new level. Thanks for the suggestion. It's awesome.

Can a laser cutting machine do this work????
As I stated in the video Rohan (you probably didn't watch the end of the show and my closing comments) vinyl records contain chlorine. Laser engravers burn and melt the vinyl in order to cut it. Burning or melting vinyl creates chlorine gas which is extremely harmful. Add a little moisture in the air and you've got yourself hydrochloric acid which is not only toxic to your body, it will severely damage your laser. So the short answer is no. You should definitely not cut one of these with your laser engraver. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

Every once in a while, I will wonder why I haven't seen a comment from you and when I venture to the "held for review" section of my channel's control panel, there you are.
