New Headlights & Bubble Skirts DRASTICALLY Improved The 1939 Mercury "The Jersey Devil"

  • Since Matt first purchased this car, the horrible Halogen conversion headlights have been on the list to replace. Today we finally get to throw them in the trash and install the correct 39 head lights. Along with the lights, Steve has to replace the entire front headlight harness due to damaged insulation. While Steve is workin on the lights, Matt is going to work on the bubble skirts. The skirts were on a car at some point and one skirt has a bit of damage that will need to be addressed. Matt strips the paint off and gets to work hammering out the damage. After a few days of work on the wiring and the skirts, it's time to roll it outside, step back and enjoy the view. Let u know what you think of The Jersey Devil down below!!!

    Now it's right. Mercs always had goofy rear wheel openings...skirts made a world of difference. Love the original headlights too.

      I have an idea several car mags will be knockin' on Matt's door thanks to his TH-cam channel to do some mag cover shoots.
      With the Sweetheart hot rod and a couple of other cars of his.
      A nice lineup series of pics.

    Great progress. The headlight "un-mod" looks perfect. And the less "blatty" exhaust is a win too. Thanks for the content!

    I was starting to call this car "rice krispies" because of all snap,crackle, pop coming out the tailpipes. The baffles smooth all that out.& deepen the tone a bit. Sounds way better! Keep the baffles!

    The stock headlights look so much cleaner,their flow with the fender is beautiful. Nice job on the skirts adapting them to fit and making them look like they were meant to be.

    I wouldn’t change anything! Love the look, the stance is right, I like it loud, it’s a hot rod. Hope I get to see it at gasket goons or wheels of time. Excellent work as usual.

    Matt, you NAILED IT PERFECTLY in my opinion. The sound fits the look of the car. Loud is for radical rods. I've been into cars since I was five and when my heart races looking at a build, it's done right. My heart definitely races with this one. I'd give my arm to own it! applause, applause, applause for an amazing and super-tasteful job!

    MAN the car's transformed! the skirts are awesome (great work, matt) the headlights (great work, steve) and i think the exhaust is better; it has a cool deeper sound. it's not always about volume but also tone, and this suits a custom better imo. hope to see a detailing update and maybe some time something on interior?

    I always try to add a "like" when you drop a new video, but rarely comment. BUT......since you asked, I LOVE this Merc! It's got a souped up Flat Head for goodness sakes. A car doesn't need to be a '28-34 Ford to be cool. This Mercury is a perfect example of that. More importantly, it's an excellent example of what someone in the '50's would have built and drove to High School. I think you guy's did an awesome job on this car, kudo's...... ;)

    The skirts were the the finishing touch to smooth out the stance of the Merc. Now it looks like the mild customs I saw running around town back in the 50's. Good looking and the baffles made the sound "badder" lol...

    Wow, she's looking sharp! Always had an appreciation for the art-deco era cars, and the the correct headlights, side skirts, white wall tires, and stanced suspension really show off the curves of this car.
    Although I was saying it needed some mufflers last video, I do agree that the baffles as-is make it a bit too quiet. Ideally, I'd shoot for having a quieter "blatt" sound under acceleration, but still have it loud because it's a sleeper hotrod after all.

  • @MartsGarage
    @MartsGarage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Hello Matt and gang. the headlamps really up the ante on that old Merc. I like the skirts. One of the things that doesn't work for me on the 39 Mercs are the lowered radius on the rear fenders. I prefer the 40 Ford type radius. I was thinking the fenders would look good if radiused out like a Ford, but the skirts look great. Hudsons of that era went with the lowered radius too and to my eye it looks not great. On my 33 and 32 I used short resonators in the exhausts and they both sound great. I think they sound better than the open pipes or the baffles. But, I am listening to mine first hand rather than through the camera and youtube. The 39 is looking great now. All the best, Mart in England.

    Nice Matt. Headlights as they originally were, the skirts and the tyres and full caps look good. In my opinion the exhaust is much better with the baffles. Nice note without blowing your ear drums out. An interesting fact about these coupes is that Ford created them by pressing a steel top for the Merc convertibles, hence the interrupted line between the roof and trunk. You have a very nice and unique car there. Best wishes from New Zealand.

    I honestly have to say you probably know and care more for traditional hot rods and customs than most of the critics. I discovered that the people on the HAMB that freak out the most never built anything they paid to get it done. Imagine how much flak George Barris and Bill Hines got when they bull-nosed a 57 Chevy hood!!! You do you brother, keep traditional alive but it doesn't have to be perfect

      @tomkrisel4493 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes that stuff is regional i.e. West coast or East coast. Apparently SOMEONE liked them because there was enough demand to manufacture them in quantity and someone bought them and installed them. I have a buddy who bought a '57 Chevy convertible with a continental kit and skirts on, like ALOT of them have on, and he took them off because he didn't like them. As a matter of fact, he lives about 7 miles from ITG. To each his own.
