Mary: Spain becomes you. For myriad reasons you are meant to be there. Spaniards are welcoming and comforting and fully appreciate any attempt to learn the language and culture. At 66 years old, took my bicycle to New York City on the train by myself and used it as my primary means of transportation for four days. Had a great time and probably did a months worth of scaring myself in those 4 days. NYC is one of the most bike friendly cities in the states in my opinion. Keep up the great work Mary.

Thank you Mary. I understand your fears, I am facing quite the same every time I am travelling abroad for my job, going out, taking the bus, the metro, the train, driving rental car and daring visiting some places, going to the restaurant, meeting people. My greatest fear is getting lost and not finding back my way to the hotel. It's stupid nowadays because we have gps and Google translator on our phones.Thank you for your videos and your very nice Bristol accent, very easy to understand for a French.

This was me with music for a long time. I've always been passionate about writing and recording songs, but the idea of performing in front of people and demanding that they give me their attention repelled me (despite the fact I never thought negatively about other people who did the same thing). Ultimately, now that I'm a little older, the idea of not pursuing my music is finally scarier to me than pursuing it. Inspiring video, Mary

I really relate to this; when I was 30, I left my home in Copenhagen and went to Bolivia for about a year to write my biology thesis. One of the motivators was that I didn’t speak a word of Spanish, but that I would return, not only with my thesis, but also with a new language skill. That I obliged myself to write or translate part of the thesis to Spanish as well, was an even stronger motivator for actually taking the challenge serious. I succeeded btw. My point, if I have any, is that combining learning a new skill with something you are passionate about really drives the process. So maybe a future goal could be writing Spanish lyrics for a song could make it less scary and more fun - not that I really believe that you are not having fun already.

Mary, I had saved this video. I watched it a year ago (via Rick Beato). Good for you! I left California end of 1980's, to move to Milan for five or six months. After twenty one years in Europe (Milan, Paris and London), I moved to New York. Each one had it's own beauty and challenges. The growth that happens is imo not obtainable any other way. I have to believe that this has brought so much to you (and to your art). Well done!! It makes such a difference. Not sure where you are now, but wherever it is, you're taking your new language and experiences with you everywhere you go. Best of luck going forwards!

I'm also 31, and I think part of this stems from developing "confidence" in your 30's. I say "confidence" because it's sort of an inadequate word; it's more the fact that you have had plenty of embarrassments throughout your 20's and lived to talk about it. You find out that you aren't made of glass. It makes it much easier to put yourself out there and stop being so scared. I think it's also, frankly, part of the typical existential crisis that happens in your 30's. If you are anything like me, you start to acknowledge your own mortality. It might sound like a vapid platitude, but "life is short" starts to become the prevailing philosophy of your 30's.
Oh god, the part about talking about something too much is something I am SO guilty of. Don't think about it, just do it.

She’s absolutely one of my very favorite people in the whole world so of course I miss her terribly and I would love to go there to see her but at the same time I still have that fear. I speak no Spanish at all and I feel like I’m going to be an immense embarrassment to her but either way fear or not when I can I’m going to actually go. Every performer is compelled to speak through their platform otherwise why do it. The difference between you and some, and why I feel you are compelling is that, you are genuine. I am 67 and have recently been informed that i am no longer needed at my company. In the last few weeks I have dragged out some songs, which I wrote many years ago and recorded on a cassette machine and have copied them on to a digital recorder . I am now working on those rough tapes to see if they can become more than just memories from a long distant past and maybe they have some potential . Great video. I’ve been doing something that scares me for the past few weeks. I’ve been a musician for 36 years, but I’ve never been confident in my singing so, in an effort to improve it by doing (and a bit of studying) I’ve been posting covers on my TH-cam channel. I posted the first one (St. Vincent’s Slow Disco) on a whim, less than 12 hours after learning the changes and I’ve been following up with a new one just about every week since. I still don’t think that I have a conventionally good voice, but I am starting to appreciate it for what it is.

Great video, Mary! I'm terrible at doing things that scare me, so this was a much needed reminder to put myself out there more. As far as learning Spanish goes, here's my no. 1 tip (I'm a translator): listen to Spanish every single day, even if it's just 10-15 minutes. Learning grammar and doing exercises is great, and you should definitely do it (especially in the beginning), but a textbook alone will not make you fluent. Consistent input is KEY (even more so than speaking and writing imo, though that's also important).

Hi Mary, back in 2003 I decided for various reasons that I needed a holiday so after virtually sticking a pin in a map found myself alone in Turkey within a week. Anyway I made friends with a Russian lady. She couldn't speak a word of English and I couldn't speak a wordof Russian. I bought a Russian/English dictionary and we managed to converse and each of us learnt some of the other's language. I was invited to Russia for New Year which was really scary not knowing what to expect but I had a great time. So it shows that it pays to do the scary things sometimes. I made some pretty good lifelong friends as I did visiting Romania some years later. Travel to new countries can be amazing.

Your genuine humility draws us to you for beginner's mind guidance. “In the beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s, there are few.”“ In Japan, we have the phrase “shoshin”, which means “beginner’s mind.” The goal of practice is always to keep our beginner’s mind. Suppose you recite the Prajna Paramita Sutra only once. It might be a very good recitation. But what would happen to you if you recited it twice, three times, four times, or more? You might easily lose your original attitude towards it. The same thing will happen in your other Zen practices. You will keep your beginner’s mind for a while, but if you continue to practice one, two, three years or more, although you may improve some, you are liable to lose the limitless meaning of original mind.” Shunryu Suzuki

The best advice I was given Mary, when learning Spanish (still am) was don’t try to listen to every word, start by getting the gist and eventually you will fill in the gaps. Also, sorry there’s a second tip. Don’t fret about forming sentences to begin with. It’s about effective communication. So if you want to buy a bottle of water simply say ‘el agua por favor’. Buena suerte y disfruta Mary!

I have a technique that enables me (a highly timid person with a fearful & feverish imagination) - I trick myself into thinking I'm NOT going to do something and then - sort of zombie-like - eventually just start doing it. This is why I hate planning, or commitment. I wait for the moment .... of madness, then start doing it. Having as it were, crossed the Rubicon, I still don't allow myself to believe I'm actually going to ... climb that mountain / attend that event / drive that distance, meet that person ........ (fill-in the dots) but wait till it's beyond turning back. I just get in the car, start the engine, press the accelerator and go. Zombie-like. It works.

Besides, in your previous posts, you said you took Spanish in school - like playing the pentatonic scales, it is there, you know it, it will come out without you thinking about it - in no time flat! Spain has a deep rich culture.
I read Michener's Iberia before I went there. It helped me understand the history better. There was an American bullfighter (I think Adams) who painted with bull's blood. His story is cinematic.

Now this is a good time to use my native language to write a comment, and you can practice if you read it, as you help me practice English with your videos! It's a win-win.
    ¡Saludos!
(I tried to write as clearly as possible, I hope everyone here who's learning Spanish can understand at least the general ideas! I can try to translate if someone wants me to. Be safe, everybody!)

Just getting out of bed scares me.. stupid anxiety and depression. And to think I can play on a stage in front of thousands and am fine but anything else to face the public I fail. Considering getting treatment but here in America that costs so they kind of got us in a catch 22. I'll figure something out but until then pretty much you-tubing my life away. Thank goodness for pleasant content like this channel.

How do I live you might ask? By selling off guitars. However that won't last forever as I will eventually run out of any to sell. Cross that bridge in a couple of years.

Life is scary by itself anyways....every endevour one does. It is also full of joy also. Busy ... there is actually no such thing. It is only a matter of priorites and where a particular something is mentally on your list. Things that one cares about the most are typically higher on the list than other things. I love the ocean. The ocean is gentle, loving, calming and it can be dangerous and terifying too. . Procrastination attacks us all and something to be mindful of... Buen día. Diviértete aprendiendo español.

Maria, as an English language teacher in Mexico I always told my students, make a lot of mistakes. That is where you learn. I also am learning Spanish with a lot of mistakes and people are so kind, and helpful. If you do not make mistakes then you already know everything and there is no need to learn. So mistakes can be good. Go to the markets, converse, make lots of mistakes, and while making those mistakes you will also make friends, kind, helpful friends.

Bravo! I’m excited for you and love your “do one thing…” motto. In January of 2020, I started my Whisky Riffs TH-cam channel and a year later, my wife and I started to learn Italian - with the goal to retire in Italy some day. It’s all been scary, especially since I’m creeping up on the age of 60, but also so rewarding. Every scary thing I’ve done in my life has brought huge rewards. The times I’ve given into fear only leave stains of regret. Enjoy your journey, I’m certainly enjoying watching it. Cheers!

Oh yes, got to get your hams sorted out. Jamon dulce is english ham. The rest is all jamon del pais. The darker yhe better. If its crap its like raw bacon. Careful which jamon you ask for. A bocatta could end up costing you 10 euros. Crisps is patatas de bolsa and chips is patatas fritas. Good luck. Saludos de Barcelona !

you are also a very talented videographer/photographer the way you are framing those beautiful architectural shots! I'm going through a very similar journey to you. Canadian living in Mexico for about two and a half months now... trying to communicate the first couple weeks was very stressful. my brain just not get out of automatically replying in English. so I started forcing myself to speak only Spanish when I go out. even if I dont know the exact proper way to say something I can make myself understood and get what I need. a couple of my best experiences were on long taxi rides with drivers who spoke about the same amount of English as I did Spanish. anyways, now that I can do the basics of daily life I found that I have lost my motivation to keep learning. sure I add another few words each week as different situations come up but dont have the motivation to get to conversational level. anyways... enjoying watching your journey!

There are two fantastic milestones when learning a new language. I have achieved one (German, many years ago, but faded now), but never the second.
First, when you stop thinking about word endings and cases and mutations and abbreviations and they just happen naturally. (most languages have some combination of these and other such linguistic features we English speakers don't think about, howver English does have its equivalents, we just don't always write them down or discuss them)
And the most fantastic moment is when you suddenly realise you've stopped thinking in English and translating into the new language, and just start thinking in that language and just speaking.
    Have a great trip.
(this is such a clumsily written comment, you'd think I was an English learner, but no, I've been speaking the language for over 50 years!)
