- As the name itself Kolhapuri Chappal originated from Kolhapur, which was specially made for the people of this place. Chappals of hardcore for the farmers and fancy chappals for the office bearers in the courts of the king as per their need (of work- rough use) were made. It is believed that the artisans were encouraged in making varieties of chappals during the reign of Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur. The Kolhapur chappals are decorated with zari strips or sponges (red color) to look more attractive and expensive which are usually worn on special occasions like weddings and parties and low-cost chappals are used for general purposes.

चप्पल जूते बनने बाले कामगारों की खूबसूरती उनके हुनर में बखूबी दिखाई देती है ।आदि काल से आज तक उनके हुनर की कीमत उनको कहाँ यह समाज दे पाया है उल्टे धुत्कार ही मिली ।
इतना कठिन कार्य कोई भी समाज मुश्किल ही कर पाए।

Kolhapuri Chappals are called as "Athani" Chappals in neigbouring Belgaum District of Karnataka, because Athani town of Belgaum district, which is about 40 km from Kolhapur city was the Original place of these Artisans, and when King Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur noticed the beauty of these Athani Chappals during his rule in last Century, he invited these Athani Artisans to Kolhapur and provided them facility in Kolhapur city to manufacture these Chappals. Later on it became popular all over Maharashtra and got the name Kolhapuri Chappals, even though it is originally from Athani town in neigbouring Belgaum district. 😊😇😇😇😊

I always wondered about how Marathi culture is somehow connected with Bengali. We (bong ppl) use this chappal as tradition. In fact during marriage ceremony or during any puja this Kolhapuri Chappal is a must.

My only complaint about Kolhapuri chappals is that they don't have sole grip. Please take it as a feedback and suggest to improve the sole grip. Everything else about the Kolhapuri is just fantastic.

You should sell these on the internet. Ebay, etsy, amazon, your own website. They would sell quickly.
They are mostly incapable of using computer and depends on local shops, So, some cunning people buy their goods in bulk and sells in internet at higher price..

My grand mother put leather chappal in to the some oil after 7 days she use. Leather is cool for our feet. With oil also cool for eyes she had no optical till 87 year

Sudha more uska reason eyesight se connected nahi hai. Leather chappal ke edges hard hote hai jisse ke pair me jakham ho jata hai. Isliye use oil me dip kiya jata hai. Uske baad chappal kaat ti nahi hai.

I was just browing for leather and landed here, Indeed such craftsmanship to be saluted and honoured...but at 0.11 made me to think about lots of things (cow and buffalo skin) that too in Kolhapur...after watching this i read the article on 2016 published by The Wire and Mr. Pavan Vasantrao Powar, Chairman of the Charmakar Samaj Audyogik Sahakari Mandali Ltd said lots of thing logically what is was the impact on this business...anyways good work.

Yes, Originally Kolhapuri Chappals were made in Athani. Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur first brought the Kannada Charmakars from Athani to neigbouring Kolhapur during his rule in Kolhapur in last Century and encouraged this Chappal making Art of Athani in Kolhapur city. Then it became famous all over Maharashtra and got the name Kolhapuri Chappals. But we should not forget that Athani is the original place of Kolhapuri chappals. 🤔😊😊😊
