I'm almost 100% positive after watching 1 weeks worth of buyers guide videos that I will buy a new rod/reel combo! Thanks Tim and Matt for the great content!
Love series since the start of it I know it’s holiday season and my 11 year old son woke me and said it that time dad go look at the video 😂 put me in the Christmas spirit and thanks for all the knowledge over the years keep up the good work
The average fisherman are not tournament fishermen I was one of those guys 30 years of tournaments had to have Loomis rods and expensive reels I quit 4 years ago and now kayak here in Florida saltwater and freshwater fishing so much cheaper and the quality of the products are a awesome thank you for your videos a lot of fishermen think they need what the pros use $500 to $1000 rod and reel combos but no fish eat the fish are hungry it’s is a-lot of pride look what I got thanks for your down to earth just so you know there are Millions of amateurs fishing than pros 👍
Thanks for the feedback Robbie! We use a lot of high end gear, but we use affordable gear as well and we strive to review and make recommendations at every price point. We know there are a TON of anglers around this price point and we want to help them make wise decisions. We hope you enjoy the whole series! If the rods get to be too much, don't sweat it... we're a few days away from baits, gear, and technique buyer's guides as well 👍🏼
When you guys first started these videos I happened to work at a tackle shop and would literally direct people to either the same products or the video itself for a first time buyer or even the purchaser. I still watch them cause not only do I like to be validated in my thoughts but to find a amazing product that I could possibly over look cause of the price range so thank you Matt and Tim for your time and wisdom. Praying for you both.
My Dudes thanks for finally making an actual true budget friendly guide ($100ish Combos). Now I can spend a few Hundred dollars on some Rod reel combos and get some really good quality that will get me a good ROI.
The abu garcia black maxx combo remains 50$ despite Bidinflation somehow and its awesome. I abuse the hell out of mine with 50 pound braid and have caught a 9 pound bass on it.
Are yall going to do the googan rods and reels this year? I know there are a lot of people who say they are good but most are associated with googan and I like how you guys are more independent but have brands that you like. I feel like you guys are one of the most honest people on TH-cam and your opinions matter more
We test a ton of gear each year but only the best of the best make the cut in these videos. You'll never see us bash anything, we just focus on the standouts 👍🏼
What a thoughtful video! This will help me introduce bass fishing to someone for Christmas so that they have a more personal experience rather than feeling like a tag-along having to borrow everything. Thank you both and everyone who supports you.
The last few years watching these buyer guides I have been building my rod reel Arsenal and lure collection off of them and I couldn’t be happier everything just works great together out on the water I believe it’s made me a better angler for sure, I think I’m up to 12 rods well going to be 13 now every time Matt says this is my I just buy it lol so I’m getting that Popper rod, you guys are awesome fun time of the year thank you.
Yesssss, new buyers guides! Last year I bought a halo ks 2 and paired it with a nasci, it was amazing, and caught dozens of fish. Even took it paddle fish snagging several times, caught a 30lber on it. The thing can take almost anything as long as you treat it right. My brother did snap it one day, but he was bending the rod to undo a snag, the whole rod was bowed up and then, he held the drag and leaned on it. Least we found its limit.
LFG. Can't wait for the $300 combos. Last 4 years I've bought some of my combos based off these buyers guide videos and I've been happy with them. Time to step up past the $200 combos now.
BEST TIME OF THE YEAR!!!!! BUYERS GUIDE, FROM TATICAL!!!!!! Been saving my money , Tim and Matt, love these buyers videos fellas..... Hella ideal, I don't think nobody on you tube does this like u guys. They just push there products or products of there sponsor's!!!! Hope your not doing that with 13 fishing , I mean look at your line up. I agree I'm one of the pre order guys of original big orange reels! I think 13 fishing has best reels for money also!!!!! Hands down!!!!! I've had " BIG ORANGE" FOR WHAT TEN YEARS NOW, WOULDN'T SELL IT FOR 300$!!!!
Matt and Tim thanks again for another informative video. I like your budget suggestions but do have an issue with the hook keeper positioned below the reel on the 13 fishing rods. When carrying them around, I find the hooks from the lure in that position catch on other things, like pants or shorts too easily. In addition, if you have a lure attached, the rod will not fit in a rod holder so that is the only issue I have with the 13 fishing rods. Other than that they are good budget rods.
I have used the Basics line since the last time you talked about it and like it the stuff is wicked strong too. You can’t beat it for the price. Thanks Matt
I've been watching you two since you started putting out videos and you mentioned Dobyns so much that I had to have one,,can't remember the exact model but it's a ,7'10" A- rig rod and I bought it because it's basically your typical flipping rod and that's what she does !!!
If you’re really on a budget you can get braided line on the cheap from eBay and Amazon. The color fades fast but I’ve never broken it. 40# is my favorite and you can 500yds for around $20. It doesn’t have the waxes or whatever that power pro uses but that makes it more supple. I don’t skimp on the leader. A Seagaur 200yrd spool lasts all year fishing weekly and changing leaders weekly.
Another option for Fluorocarbon line is Fluoro coated lines. I’ve used Kast King’s FluoroCoat Copolymer line for years. It is incredible line fir the price. I still use some straight Fluorocarbon line, but it’s getting less and less. Straight Fluoro usually is a 200 feet spool while Fluorocoated comes in 300 foot spools while costing less.
Thank you, gentlemen. Very happy holidays to you and your families. Nice to see 13 getting some more TB Buyers Guide love this year; I have several of them and find them to be a tremendous value for the price point. As a bank angler, I'm not keen to be subjecting high-dollar combos to the perils found along the Florida shorelines, so my gear is typically under 250 dollars for rod and reel. Thank you so much for these Buyers Guides, and for all of the tremendous content you give us during the year. Looking forward to tomorrow!
You guys are the best. My last rod purchase was a Savage Gear Squad 7-1 MH rod and I am really pleased with it, especially the price. That was based on your suggestion and I really appreciate your equipment reviews. Thank you.
I have the Daiwa Revros and Arid-X combo you mentioned. The rod is pretty light/soft and parabolic. It is fun to use to catch feisty white bass. I have a Dobyn's Colt baitcasting rod and it is a good rod. However, it is softer than it is rated. It is rated at MH but seems more like a ML to me. I use it just fine with lighter baits. Seems like there is some variation in rod ratings among the different manufacturers.
The same procedure as last year, Ms Sophie? I love your buyers guides and thanks god, this year it‘s the same procedure as every year. Keep on providing us with such great and valuable content! Greetings from Germany and happy holidays…
I've owned atleast 1/3 of these rods or so in the past and still have one or two... These guys are on point. The Daiwa Aird-x and 13 defy black are the best rods you will find at that price point. Highly recommend them as well
Look forward to buyers guide each year. You guys introduced me to the dobyns colt and shimano sellus budget rods few years back and I now have 3 of each brand in my arsenal.
So I fish inshore Texas coast saltwater 90% of the time. I have very nice rods for that like Sarge customs, Laguna, waterloo, and old 18 . For bass, I have been cheap and stick to my diawa airidx rods. For the price of 50 dollars, you can't go wrong.
Love this series. In the $100 and $200 combo vids I pay close attention to the rods. I’ve found gems in the 13 fishing rod / reel lineups and other companies not mentioned because this video helps me focus on the power, action, lure/ line weight and not the price. .... awesome that you added in line recommendations. The basix can’t be beat. I’ve had zero issues with it this past year. ... when I use more expensive line to combat cost I’ve actually started using a cheap braid backer. I spool on 100ft of the bread and then 200ft of Fluoro. Makes my pricier Fluoro spools last a lot longer.
13 makes some great stuff. I have some rods from the Defy, Fate and Omen series and an Inception reel. For the money, they are hard to beat. I actually had issues using Basix on a spinner, so switched back after too many birds' nests. It seemed like good quality line, but I could not get it to behave for me. Good luck out there!
@@oldeschoolbob1022 I’ve only used the basix on casting. For spinning I switched to all braid last year. Prior to the switch my favorite line was the Berkeley xl smooth casting mono. Love that line and it’s cheap. Good luck as well
Been Fishing the Aird X / Revros combo for senkos & drop shots for the last 2 years. Very happy with the rod. Drag on the Revros isn't great, but it's hard to beat at the price point. Nice work on the reivews
Great video guys! I embraced the 13 fishing line up during Black Friday and Boxing Day last year in 2021 and run 2 Fate Black cranking rods and 2 spinning rods in the medium/light category and they are absolutely the best bang for the buck. Super light rods and tough and durable at the same time! The rest of the rods I run are up in price range in the 13 Fishing Omen line and their discountinued boogie Muse line up which may or may not be coming up in your next videos. HAHA Love the videos as it helps figure out what set up I need for a specific technique I am missing. Big thank you guys!
I'll second that!! I own some higher end Shimano spinning reels, but I fell in love with the Piscifun Carbon X series of spinning reels and that is all I fish with now. Their Alloy M Baitcasting Reel is awesome as well.
Tackle Warehouse has a annual BF of 20% (I think) off of everything -- Black Friday Sale starting Wednesday, November 23rd 2022 at 6PM PT. You'll get a whole combo for around $80 w/ free shipping. I normally stock up on lures. That discount applies to even electronics, power poles, etc. It's my annual Christmas shopping --- all for myself.
I grabbed my first revros my senior year of hs, fishing tournaments with other broke kids hahahaha I turned so many people onto them, go 2 and 3000 size for like sub $60 if I reverse correctly. Amazing spinning reel My favorite budget casting reel was an Okuma Cerros? I think. My top water reel
G'day from Australia mates...In 2010 i imported to my country 6 Powellco rods...I love them and tournament fish with them over here on bass.... The cheapest in the range at the time was their Diesel series of rods to which i bought a 7ft med-heavy baitcast rod i use for casting deep diving crankbaits with a daiwa baitcaster loaded with braid and fluro leader... My question is the latest Diesel rods have been released and i would be interested in your thoughts regarding the new series of diesel rods... Thanks in advance best regards B.J.
Sweeet love these vids guys! 👊🏽😎 Last Christmas I got the Mrs. her first legit combo ever, a Nexave paired with a Bass X, and she’s been killing em on it all year absolutely loves it! 😊 Lol funny we actually just did a video where I taught her how to take apart the entire Nexave and clean her own reel for the very first time. Lol hilarious, she’s hooked man! 😂🤙🏽
Thats Tim's new(ish) boat. He picked it up a couple months back. Don't worry, he didn't get rid of the champ... it was just time for an updated trailer, a motor warranty, etc... those Long road trips are brutal!!
The abu max series is a super solid set of casting reels especially the max x. The Lew's Xfinity casting is a great choice as well. Pair either up with the Lew's Hank Parker wall mart rod for 50 bucks and you got a really solid combo. The mh is a stellar frog and buzz bait rod and still is in my lineup as backup or pond fishing. I wish someone had told be about those early on before I bought a daiwa lol
Always fun watching your pre Black Friday series. Curious how you pick your brands. I noticed some brands are missed year by year like Abu Garcia, Fitzgerald, Powell, Phenix and others. Some really great rods in some of these "other" brand names. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
Great question! We base our choices on real world experience on the water. The assumption is often that we just haven't tried the others... we own rods from every brand you just listed. We work feverishly all year to buy and test new gear. Thimk of the previous year's video as a baseline... something new has to hit us hard enough to bump a current contender.
I have been able to put together some nice combos due to the sales. Picked up a couple SLX 7’ spinning rods for 27$ each and got the 2500 Nexave for @$35 each. I watch Academy sales closely.
If we use your affiliate link, but change product pages to purchase a different item, do you guys still get your commission? Long time viewer and fan, thank you for all the years of helpful content; you guys have undoubtedly helped me catch more and larger fish consistently. Was also happy when you guys moved to our area. Best of luck and thanks!
What are the most common issues you look for when you buy a new rod? Air bubbles around the eyelets epoxy and lined up straight? How much flex the rod has? What do y’all recommend for reel repair and grease for upkeep?
I personally first check the guides are straight then tap the tip on a hard surface to check sensitivity and hold the rod below the bottom guide and bend the tip down to make sure there's no blank roll. In the off-season I clean and spray the rod's with Reel Magic which keep's the guide's and blank from any rot. Just don't let the Reel Magic get on the cork or foam.

I grabbed my first revros my senior year of hs, fishing tournaments with other broke kids hahahaha
I turned so many people onto them, go 2 and 3000 size for like sub $60 if I reverse correctly. Amazing spinning reel
My favorite budget casting reel was an Okuma Cerros? I think. My top water reel
Want to start fishing more with my young son. What would be a recommendation for good all around rod for shore fishing, especially in central Florida
WOOO BEST PART OF THE YEAR
Sweeet love these vids guys! 😂🤙🏽
Thats awesome!! Way to go!
@@tacticalbassin 😊🤙🏽
Do you guys have any two piece rod recommendations? It would be really convenient for me to be able to keep my rods in my trunk
Love these videos, but what gives with the Skeeter?
Thats Tim's new(ish) boat. He picked it up a couple months back. Don't worry, he didn't get rid of the champ... it was just time for an updated trailer, a motor warranty, etc... those Long road trips are brutal!!
What about the Abu Garcia Vendetta, I really hesitate between this one and the Fate black you show in the video
Thanks Matt and Tim! I've been wait (impatiently) for your buyer's guide video's for weeks. I thought you forgot us? 😂
We would never! 😁
@@tacticalbassin Great Job as alway's guys!
Been waiting on this series. I hope you're planning to hit glasses, hats, clothing, and life vests as well.
Some of those, yes. If there is something we missed and you wanted to know just ask in the comments and we'll do all we can to help.
SMH Here we go, I'm about to break the bank this week. I absolutely love these buyers guides.
We hope you enjoy them Wayne!
I have been able to put together some nice combos due to the sales. Picked up a couple SLX 7’ spinning rods for 27$ each and got the 2500 Nexave for @$35 each. I watch Academy sales closely.
You guy should try googan baits rods and reels
If we use your affiliate link, but change product pages to purchase a different item, do you guys still get your commission? Long time viewer and fan, thank you for all the years of helpful content; you guys have undoubtedly helped me catch more and larger fish consistently. Was also happy when you guys moved to our area. Best of luck and thanks!
Is the sellus medium too light for weightless Texas rig and 1/4 oz swim bait heads??? Would the medium heavy be better
Nice!
Thanks👍
Is the Shimano Caius Combo worth getting as a first baitcaster on sale for $65? or would it be a better option to spend more on the SLX combo for $130
What are the most common issues you look for when you buy a new rod? Air bubbles around the eyelets epoxy and lined up straight? How much flex the rod has?
What do y’all recommend for reel repair and grease for upkeep?
I personally first check the guides are straight then tap the tip on a hard surface to check sensitivity and hold the rod below the bottom guide and bend the tip down to make sure there's no blank roll. In the off-season I clean and spray the rod's with Reel Magic which keep's the guide's and blank from any rot. Just don't let the Reel Magic get on the cork or foam.
Great job I'm always watching. Bassmd
Thank you!!
My TB wish list is already loaded up. :)
Ha! That's awesome!!
