Hey Quad, have you heard of anyone having success using your frame edge stl file? I am attempting it now and CNCd out the acrylic and measured to check, the plastic has perfect 150mm edges but I can't get your frame edges to fit. Any ideas? I have printed all 30 which is a bummer so it's not an issue with one piece or another, none of them fit. I am using the newest 16 version.

When you are wiring the LED's in you have 5 spots in your diagram where you are wiring 2 into 1, almost like a 'Y' connection, can you show a picture of how you wired these? I have some ideas, but haven't done much electrical and would like to make sure I am getting the right way. Thanks so much
Led signal pads are directional. Signal is going 1,2,3,4... so I am splitting signal from end of one edge to start of two edges. For example led 8 is going to 9a, 10a, 11a... and 9b, 10b, 11b.... 9a and 9b have the same signal. So I just connect signal out pad from led 8 to signal in pad on leds 9a and 9b.
Can you please do an in depth guide about the wiring? I’m new to this stuff so all the split signals stuff is throwing me off. Ive read through comments and looked at the schematics but still cant understand. Love the video and i thought everything else was very clear, so thank you!
im having a hard time seeing how you soldered the led together and im having a hard time soldering my 144led/m strip together, i think i need a micro pen for that but still, how do you get the last cables on place when you only have a tiny window? also do i really need a 50amp switching power supply because it will be almost 600lights on mine?
I have 252 leds (60led/m * 4,2m) and it consumes about 5A on solid color, at max brightness, I did not try all leds on white and at max brightness, that would be probably even more, I don't have power supply for that. Animations consume usually less (3A, not all leds are running at the same time). It is probably wise not to run 144led/m strip at full brightnes because of cooling, I think original from deeplightlabs had something like 3 battery packs capable of 15A each. Soldering is visible in video I left last panel open, soldered the cables and pop the panel shut :]
@@quadsquad3087 thanks as always for your great replies, I have started soldering now and it seems to work when soldering the 3 connections to one more strip, how ever when I do a split, that is connect one strip to 2 strips so that the 3 connections splits into 6 connections the light seems to stop there but we can stil measure 5 volts on the strips that are not lighting up. Hey quick question, so I'm about to print this frame and I see 3 different schemes for pieces. Do you need to print 30 pieces from one model to make it complete or are those different pieces to make the dodecahedron
they are different versions of the same part (I suggest latest version 16, it is wider and has better conections), you print it 30 times and put it together :)
I cut up my 12 plexi glass polys and realized I did it all in 3mm, do you think if I modified the project file to somehow make it a 3mm gap it would mess things up??
So happy to have come across your video, I will be starting my project very soon! I am going to attempt the Icosahedron instead, do you believe your method will work on the different shapes? Also, where did you get your frame 3D printed at? I truly appreciate any information.
Aah, nice idea. Of course it will work with different shapes. Share yours when finished. I have 3d printer at work, I did the frame in a couple of hours in sketch up.
I noticed that in some spots where multiple light strips meet it looks like you have some wires going one way and others going another way. How did you decide on which wires continue in certain directions? Does it matter? This is the only part I am stuck on. I am building a similar device except mine is a rectangular prism. In some corners I have 3 strips meeting, but at the top I have 4 meeting. I am trying to figure out the configuration of wire connections. Love the video by the way! Very inspiring.
hope this helps, you can connect all +5v and gnd wires with each other, data for leds are directional, strip has data in and data out, so I used this scheme drive.google.com/open?id=17CiI9-YV0Id03ScudgktHuNx7LMxKMHQ
@@quadsquad3087 Ah I think I might understand! Hey thanks for sharing. Very nice work. You've inspired me to make one! The question I have is with the data in, you're explanation in the schema is that there is 5 sections of six strips. Does this mean you have split the data at the point where it enters, and run four cables to the other sections? I can't quite make out the wiring in the video.
yes, from controller data out you connect to data in of first parts of all 5 sections. 107 controller have option to drive a matrix, so you could connect all sections not in parallel, but in series (section 1 -> section 2 -> 3 -> 4 -> 5) and choose for example pattern 5x50led, and you could view spectrum analyser :]
@@quadsquad3087 Thanks for your quick response. Much appreciated! Soooo, I have two more questions sorry. I'm using 100LED/m strip with the sp107e controller. My main question is to do with dimming. Also, as I'm using the sp107e, do you think wiring data in series is a better option? Thanks in advance!

they are different versions of the same part (I suggest latest version 16, it is wider and has better conections), you print it 30 times and put it together :)
I cut up my 12 plexi glass polys and realized I did it all in 3mm, do you think if I modified the project file to somehow make it a 3mm gap it would mess things up??
Modification shouldn't ve a problem. Let us know the result
@Ilya Flipsen also used a 3mm thick acrylic glass. What adjustments do i need to do with the v16 model
Very inspiring.
hope this helps, you can connect all +5v and gnd wires with each other, data for leds are directional, strip has data in and data out, so I used this scheme

@@quadsquad3087 Ah I think I might understand! As long as each strip has the +5v/Gnd connection from somewhere (doesn't matter where) and the data running in 1 continuous direction it should all work out (see below). Where did you end your +5/Gnd? Sorry if that is a dumb question, I have zero electrical experience. I really appreciate your help.

@@quadsquad3087 Also, I had to buy a slightly different LED strip than the one you linked.. I see the +5v and RGB connectors, but I don't see Gnd.. Will this one still work?

@@dylanmiller9793 yes, your scheme is ok, you don't have to end the gnd+5v, you just connect it to the led driver, that is it.
For some reason i cant get your files for the frame to open.
U need an app that will open 3d images
Great project - thanks for all the information. I do have one question; what power supply are you using?
for test I was using my bench test power supply and it consumes 2-3A (maximum is 5A at max brightnes, all white, 180leds) at 5V. Now I am using notebook power supply with 3A step down (19V->5V). I ordered some 5V 3A power supplies but not yet tested.
@@quadsquad3087 Thank you for your very quick response to my question - it is sincerely appreciated.
How thick is the glass? Send dimensions plsss thankss
2mm thick, 150 is the lenght of the edge
150mm?
What power supply do you prefer?
@@naik8621 I have 5V 8A, yes 150mm
@@quadsquad3087 i got a power supply that has this features
.Input Voltage: AC 110V-240V
2.Output Voltage: DC5V
3.Output Current: 20A 40A 60A 70A
4.Power:100W 200W 300W 350W
will that do? Thank you so much!!
I'm worried about too much current draw overheating the strip. Is the LED Chord app sufficient for protection through dimming or should I have some other sort of limiting? Also, as I'm using the sp107e, do you think wiring data in series is a better option? Thanks in advance!
I should also add that I'm thinking I may use an arduino in the future. From what I can tell, series connection of the data will give me more control over the patterns. Is this correct?
@@stevenragen4157 yes you can dim it in sp107e, that is enough, check the temperatures, but it should be fine. Yes in series you can adress each led individually, I wanted also to test controller 106 so I wired it as 5 same segments.
@@stevenragen4157 yes exactly, I wanted to use arduino, but it is easier to use premade controller if you want it to react to music. Controller = quick and easy. Arduino = more control, but more work.
Make it 10x bigger more lights. We all in COVID lockdown, need some more bang….right?
I built a dodecahedron out of red oak, it's beautiful and I want to put led's in and create a infinity mirror but I want the lights to be amazing. I would like to talk to you please msg me back.
would you sell it?
I will keep this one, but I saw some for sell here www.etsy.com/listing/906793805/the-trap-orb-diy-led-infinity?ref=landingpage_similar_listing_top-1
Can u make me one?
Very cool but it would be better if you remove the scotch tape
TOPPPPPPPPPP!!!!
How many pieces of each in the version 8,14,16 3d frames? Thank you
you need 30pieces, diferent versions has different connections, best is the last version 16, so print v16 30x and you are done.
Yours is looking rather milky compared to the other ones which are clearer. I think it's because of the material used.
I found this thread on reddit:
www.reddit.com/r/DIY/comments/eguck8/dodecahedron_infinity_mirror/
He used premade mirrored acrylic and he also has clear mirrors so anyone wanting to do this better use that one. www.tapplastics.com/product/plastics/cut_to_size_plastic/two_way_mirrored_acrylic/558
Thank you! It turns out the two-way mirror is the dirty little secret no one wants to talk about when building these. After trying to make my own, I know why they are always filmed so dark.
Would pay if someone made it @Jx42
the problem is that you don't show the weld path. :(
you're a fucking Legend!
Omg
Would love to see this with a strip of diffuser over the light strips.
I see a lot of post asking for one.... I built one for an event and am willing to build more for far less than the insane etsy prices.
dm for more info... and to op if this post isnt okay please feel free to delete, I figured it would be okay since I saw your comment saying you werent selling any and linked to an etsy shop.
No problemo
You should remove the tapes. Really.
would you sell one?
