      You should really review this mic. I think it's likely a really good option for some voice talent. I personally prefer shotgun mics these days for voice over, and this seems to be a great indoor shotgun.

    How does this Deity S-Mic 2S compare to Deity V-Mic D3 (Pro)?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This mic has a balanced XLR output while the D3 Pro has a 3.5mm output. The D3 Pro can be adapted to balanced XLR. I believe I experienced a bit of RF interference on the D3 pro when I mounted a wireless transmitter by it on a boom pole so it doesn’t appear to be as well shielded as the S-Mic 2S.

  • @LloydPuckitt
    @LloydPuckitt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the review Curtis. Like everyone, I have been waiting for the review of the S-Mic 2s.
    I thought it sounded great, and if I got my super picky cap on, a bit thinner than I expected, but with “relaxed” high frequencies. Deity’s intent to have their mic’s cut together should work, I think the high end matches, but the low end presence difference may have to be dealt with somehow depending on the situation.
    The voice does seem to sit forward with the S-Mic 2s, and when you consider this with all the other mic’s I have heard in this price range, I would consider this one of, if not the best I’ve heard so far.
    Side note;
    The MKH-416’s noise floor and rear rejection were stellar. I’m not sure if you lucked into a really good one, or if that is characteristic of all of them.
    And this had nothing to do with anything, but I thought your voice sounded best on the Azden SGM-3500.
    All the best.

I have heard other 416's that were good, of course, it just seems like the one Curtis has is exceptional. One question: Does this mic have a better sound quality than the Deity V-Mic D3 pro and the Rode Videomic Pro+?

    • @insanejughead
      @insanejughead 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That question can only get you a subjective response. What specifically do you want in a microphone's sound profile?
      For example, on paper, the Røde Ntg4 is 'better' than the Ntg2, but Curtis doesn't like the Ntg4 much for its frequency profile.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, they all sound pretty similar. What this has which the other two do not have is better RF shielding. However, if you're going to attach the mic to the top of your camera, the other two are made for that. The S-Mic 2S would require a third party cold-shoe shock mount.

    First in mixing mics is there a major difference? I have an NTG-3 & wonder if mixing that with the S Mic 2S would be really apparent.
    Second what is the blimp at the 6:24 mark?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the two shotgun mics are each used for a different person, it isn’t usually an issue though I would usually try to stay to all medium or all short shotguns. The windshield is a Rycote Cyclone.

    The off axis coloration (esp. on a moving source) on the S Mic 2 S seems a lot lower than the other longer mics. The frequency response remains consistent and that makes me lean towards that. I'm willing to sacrifice a little bit of rejection most of the time for a more balanced sound. If you're in a really noisy environment, even a mile long mic won't do anything. You're better off finding a quieter location or moving away from the noise source rather than just relying on the directionality of the mic.

  • @pebuchmann
    @pebuchmann ปีที่แล้ว

    After watching the video, I bought the Deity S-Mic 2s and I really like the sound. However, when I use the mic with the Rode Wireless Go II system, it picks up noise when I point the mic away from the speaker with the transmitter (when the back of the mic or the XLR connector comes near one of the Rode GO II transmitters). Hi, I am sorry to ask you a similar question on a different video, but I will phrase it differently and make it easier to understand. If you could use only one mic for a discussion panel, where 4 people are seated on one side of a long table, and the mic would be stationary on a stand in front of them, would you use this S Mic-2 or a D3 pro? Thanks!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      To pick up 4 people, Perhaps a boundary mic or at least a condenser microphone with a wider polar pattern would be a better choice than a shotgun microphone. Something like a RODE NT1, but keep in mind the 4 people will need to be seated quite close to the mic. If there is a PA system involved, you'll want to make sure the mic is not in front of the speakers or you'll probably have feedback issues.

    • @curtisjudd

      This mic has a balanced XLR output while the D3 Pro has a 3.5mm output. The D3 Pro can be adapted to balanced XLR. I believe I experienced a bit of RF interference on the D3 pro when I mounted a wireless transmitter by it on a boom pole so it doesn’t appear to be as well shielded as the S-Mic 2S.

      I ended up buying this mic using your affiliate link. I'm using a small $30 inline preamp and mounted them together on top of my camera. This set up works great for running around vlog style. Not sure it sounds any better than one of the purpose build on camera mics would sound. I was hoping to use this mic for voiceover too, but I'm pretty disappointed with the quality of the sound. I was expecting it to be significantly better than those one camera shotguns when spoken directly into. Was hoping for a rich sounds with nice proximity effect, etc. It just sounds flat and boring. Even the zoom H1 is more interesting as a voice over mic. I've seen people using mkh-416 for studio mics and wondering if this mic is just significantly worse at that type of audio recording?

    How does this compare to the d3 pro?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Similar sound but for different setups. This has an XLR output and assumed to be used on a boom stand or boom pole. D3 Pro is made to be mounted on camera but can be adapted to be boomed.

    Couple things... how can the polar pattern of a short shotgun be a con? Isn't that the nature of the tool? Longer gun for a tighter pickup would be the better tool selection.
    Next, manufacturers need to STOP printing their logo on the windscreens. I understand they probably think it's a disposable piece and a better shield will be used, but in my business the supplied screen is generally good enough. Yet we cannot show logos on screen. Thus I'd have to buy a replacement right from the start. Picky, yes, but still an added expense.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just pointing out to people that short shotgun mics are not nearly as focused in terms of polar pattern than most newbies assume.

    Curtis, your reviews are always revealing to me. Thanks for all the knowledge you're bringing to us.
    I'd like to ask you if you had ever made any review about a good first shotgun mic. I'm in this research for a long time and there are so many relative good options at the market that it makes me confused about which to invest.
    If you already have done some review like this, could you share with me the link?
    Thank you again.
    Best wishes!!

      Hi Paulo, there are many good options out there. I do not have a video specifically about a first shotgun microphone, but I do have a few suggestions depending on your budget. The Audio Technica AT875R is a good option for under $200 USD. The DEITY S-Mic 2 is a good option for the $300 range and the RODE NTG5 is great at $500. Hope that helps and best of wishes!

    To my ears, on Azden and Sennheiser mics your voice sound better than both of Deity ones, though short version sound bit worse, with lower level of low end frequencies.

    Thanks a lot, great review as usual! I'm still wondering with one I should get between the S-Mic2 and the 2S... As an independant filmmaker I'll do mostly voice recording on set (by myself most of the time), but I plan on recording foley as well. Does it make any difference in a controlled environment/studio, or will the S2 have a slight advantage because it's less directionnal?

      Hi Ahmed, no, this microphone is different with and interference tube while the NT5 and NT55 do not. The shotgun is intended more for outdoor use while the NT5 and 55 where mainly intended for recording instruments indoors. If RODE would add a super-cardioid capsule, it’d be a great option for dialogue.
