At 33:35 you state that the resonance in the aluminum body of the S-Mic 3 sounds better than the resonance in the brass body of the S-Mic 2. Now I was under the distinct impression that resonance of ANY kind in a microphone body was a bad thing! You seem to be saying the opposite. What am I missing here? This short Podcastage video illustrates the point: th-cam.com/video/PV4v8Diww8I/w-d-xo.html
What Bandrew is demonstrating is physical contact and resonance and he's right, you don't want to body of the mic to resonate with any vibrations whether physical via direct contact or acoustic vibration but in this case, I was referring to the resonance of the reverberations inside the mic. For example, if you are speaking in a room with hardwood walls, ceiling and floor, it will sound completely different when you speak in there as it would be if you were in a steel bank vault. Sounds waves disburse when they hit a surface and bounce thereby becoming less detailed. Inside the brass body, the sound waves resonate just as they do in the aluminum body but the metal itself shapes the sound as part of the engineering. Excellent point you make though and thanks for the point to clarify.
fab video! In the highway test, the 3s really lost "integrity" by the time it was 11 feet high on the pole. Yet your vocal articulation was still understandable at the maximum extension of the pole, which is pretty amazing for a shorter-inference tube mic. Great stuff!
Hello, first of all, thank you so much for your in-depth review. Your work is amazing and you can tell that you love it. I would like to ask for some help. I am a therapist looking for a really good sound for my therapy sessions (OVER ZOOM or Google Meet, which I imagine will compress the signal a lot). I would like for the mic to be out of the frame. Also, the room is not treated. I am wondering if I should buy the S Mic 3S + an audio interface (I have seen the U-Phoria UMC202HD), if it would be better to get the MKH600 or if you would recommend saving some money and trouble and use the Rode Videomic NTG and not even buying the audio interface. I am sorry, my question is so long. Thank you so much and have a nice day.
There's a lot of things that go into mic recommendations like the acoustics in your recording environment. Shoot me an email and include a picture of the space and I'll see what I can do.
Fantastic tests, and I really agree with your conclusions. It is really interesting how the new ones sound better than the old ones despite the same specifications and capsule, but that is what my ears tell me as well. In my opinion, a big win for Deity here.
I've been waiting for someone of your caliber to review the 3s... Thank you, so good! Although, I would love to know if the 3s holds up against the mkh50 or a shoeps or dpa?
Thanks for this, I've been looking at the S-Mic 2S for outdoors, windy environment (with Rycote cage & fluffy) for wildlife. Would the 2S be better than the 3s in those conditions? (Thinking weight difference, brass v alum)
Great video as always! :) Quick question, What I loved about the 2 and 2s is the fact that they are basically waterproof. Making them great for documentary work in crazy environments. Are the 3 and 3s still as waterproof? thanks.
I asked the same question and was told that while they don't recommend submerging it, water shouldn't ruin your day. It's supposedly the same as the 2 which had an epoxy sealed circuit board.
@@SoundSpeeds Hi, thanks for the very quick reply. Just to clarify, you are saying the 3 also has an epoxy sealed circuit? So, if I were to use it in the rain or drop it in a lake and pick it up right away, it should be fine? It would be great if you could do a water resistance test like you did for the Smic 2 when it came out :)
According to Deity it's epoxy sealed and water proof just like the 2/2S but mentioning that makes it seem gimmicky so they didn't mention it. It should easily resist submerging provided nothing coats the capsule or jams up in the interference tube.
That is a great review. Many good shotgun microphones are in the US$300-$400 price range. How does the Deity Microphones S-Mic 3 ($399) compare to the Sennheiser MKH 600 ($290)?
Thank you, Allen, espescially for mentioning the differences between the 3 series and the 2 series. As someone who deals with NON-professional talent, I am thinking the 3S might be a more forgiving mic, but still good enough??? Also, my budget for mics is kind of low at the moment, so I wonder if the 3S seems to be able to cover more situations (depsite not being the best at off axis rejection).
Thanks for the in depth testing! As I upgrade my kit I was wondering what would be a step up from the S Mic? I’ve been looking at the MKH8060 and the DPA 4017B. Is the 416 even relevant in todays market?
Yes, it is still an industry standard for a reason. My only point here was if you want to use it inside a controlled space, it may not serve you as well.
Allen: did the self noise improve compared to the Smic2? In 2020 I bought a Smic2s in my country and found that it had noticeable self noise. I returned it and tried the Smic2 in the store and I didn't like it either. I did the tests with an SD302 comparing with a Sennheiser ME66. On TH-cam I didn't see anyone talking about the noise of the Smic2. Thank you
Hi, I started filming leathercrafts youtube video recently for work. I am using tascam x6 default mic to record sound. I have been looking for a shotgun mic to connect and was spending a bunch of time to figure out what I should buy. I was wondering what you would recommend out of mke600 / s-mic 2 / s-mic 3 / ntg 4+ / ntg 5. I would love to know your opnion. I will record tiny sounds indoor mostly. Thanks!
I just have one more question. As a average person listening to youtube videos through a cellphone speaker, do you think any of those options will create meaningful difference?
both mics look great and leaning towards the 3s just because it's shorter and I'd like to use it on top of my fx30 xlr handle. i guess my question is do you think the s mic 3 would be too long to have on that xlr handle
@@HDBnB1 Hi, does it work well with fx xlr handle? I have a RODE VideoMic NTG and when holding on the fx30 xlr handle, I can clearly hear the handling noise of my hand and butoon. Do you have this with Deity 3s the xlr mic?
Great review Allen, thanks! 🙌🏽 As a pro boom op, would you like to see in a future a "S Mic 3L" version? Mkh816 type size, but 60% less the weight, for very wide shots on very loud locations
@@SoundSpeedsbummer. I ended up buying the xvive u5t2 for my wireless mics system. The g3 can only do 1 mic at a time and I was looking for a 2 person setup. It's the only system I found that is small and has replaceable batteries. It has actually 2 decent $40 lav mics included and the whole package was $109 on Amazon. I know you are like no way this system is worth anything quality wise but check the reviews and it seems as good as the ride wireless go 2 minus the internal recording. Anyways thanks for all the advice.👍🏼
From what I have experienced with aluminum interference tube mics they tend to have a more ringing handling noise whereas the brass ones does not. What was your experience with these 2 mics?
If I'd like to shoot an interview with a cold-shoe on the cage/camera mount, about 1.5 - 2 meters away from the subject indoors about 70-80% isolated, would you go for Sennheiser MKE 600 or Deity S-Mic 3?

Great video, to "me" I liked the tone of the S Mic 3 over the MHK-416, the S Mic 3 sounded fuller with more low end body to it.
Exactly my thought too
jeez these are the most thorough tests of mics I have ever seen and they are fantastic.
Thank you and agreed, they are surprisingly good

Completely agree.
Finally, a microphone I can plug into my dash cam.
That would be interesting.
For the price, that weight and the sound quality... these mics are GREAT!!!!
They really are. Surprisingly good.
Between the Deity S-Mic 3s vs the Rycote SC-08 which one do you prefer?
What do you think about the S-Mic 3 vs the Rycote HC-15 too?
The S-Mic 3 vs HC-15 is easy. I prefer the S-Mic 3 hands down. As for the 3S vs SC-08... I'll go SC-08 but only slightly.
@@SoundSpeeds Thank you
The shock mount was made in collaboration with Radius. Its a yellow and black RAD shockmount.
